Adolescent females perceive themselves to be healthy but research suggests this population engages in unhealthy and risky behaviors. Health habits established during youth transition into adulthood and may contribute to chronic diseases later in life. Guided by Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), the purpose of this study was to test the effect of a comprehensive wellness intervention on overall wellness, physical fitness, and self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors in female adolescents. The cost of care for these Americans is astounding: $174 billion dollars was spent on diabetes care in 2007 (ADA, 2011). Furthermore, an estimated 75% of patients with type 2 diabetes have concomitant hypertension, and nearly one-half of these patients have uncontrolled hypertension (Thomas & Kodack, 2011; USDHHS, 2011). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) educational sessions, whether part of a multidisciplinary plan of care or separate entities, have been increasingly utilized over the last 20 years. Although literature reviews exist in which randomized controlled studies concerning CKD educational sessions are addressed, none of the studies reviewed specifically addressed the low attendance rates of CKD educational sessions. The purpose of this research was to describe current and recommended CKD (predialysis) educational interventions and outcomes in controlled and multidisciplinary studies, examine documented issues related to attendance, and determine barriers and facilitators that affect attendance at educational sessions for CKD patients.

This study explored the willingness of Chattanooga community members to utilize retail clinics for simple ailments rather than the area EDs. Specifically, community members ages 25-45 were surveyed and asked to rate their willingness to use a retail clinic for their acute healthcare needs rather than the overcrowded local EDs. Additionally, this study explored community members’ perceived barriers to use retail clinics. Results were compared between demographic variables such as yearly income, race, gender, and age.

CONTEXT: In the U.S., patients with advanced cancer who are dehydrated or have decreased oral intake almost always receive parenteral hydration in acute care facilities but rarely in the hospice setting.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the meaning of hydration for terminally ill cancer patients in home hospice care and for their primary caregivers.

From 2002 to 2006, the median age for newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer was 61 years and the median age for breast cancer mortality was 68 years of age (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results [SEER], 2009). Mammography is the best available screening tool for breast cancer detection (Susan G. Komen Foundation, 2008). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS, 2006) reported that only about half of older women who are eligible for mammograms through Medicare obtain a mammogram every two years. This dissertation study examined the relationship of glucose control with clinical outcomes, costs, discharge planning and education. Extant studies showed that hyperglycemia, in the presence or absence of a diabetes diagnosis, is prevalent in hospitalized patients. Hyperglycemia is found in one-third of all hospital admissions and is linked to poor clinical outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Furthermore, clinical evidence suggests that lack of discharge coordination associated with medical errors and readmission. Background: This dissertation examined the phenomenon of delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Delirium is a form of cognitive disturbance with a physiologic etiology and complex, multifactorial mechanisms of causation and risk. Delirium in the ICU patient presents a significant risk for adverse outcomes including increased mortality, length of stay, falls, and restraint use. ICU delirium can lead to persistent cognitive impairment beyond discharge and frequent skilled nursing placement. Identifying delirium requires accurate diagnosis that is optimized when validated instruments are used. Sleep deprivation has been linked to adverse health consequences including delirium. This study explores tobacco-use related environment, intrapersonal factors, and smoking initiation in Thai-American adolescents aged 10 to 16 living in Southern California. A purposive sample of 217 youth was recruited from seven Thai-community centers located in four counties of Southern California: The sample was fairly evenly distributed by gender with female (54.5%) and almost three quarters (70.9%) were born in the United States (70.9%). Age ranged from 10 to 16 years, with the mean age 12.71 years old (SD =1.835); 27% reported age of 11. Data were collected using the 97 item Teen Tobacco-Use Questionnaire. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (2010) report that nearly one-third of babies were born by Cesarean section (CS) in 2007. Of interest, six states, including Nevada, experienced increases of more than 70% in the last 10 years (CDC, 2007). Based on the increased rate of CS deliveries, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) convened a consensus panel in 2010, which urged the medical community to reduce barriers to women who want to try a vaginal birth after Cesarean delivery (VBAC) in the hope this would safely decrease the total CS rate.
