Many efforts have been made to maximize the utilization of health cue system. As a result the utilization of health care system by African Americans has increased, improving the health status (Blendon, Aiken, Freeman, & Corey, 1989). While some improvements have been made, recent reports show disparities between African Americans and Caucasians in the utilization of health care systems and in their health status. Barriers have been identified among those in the lower social economic status (SES). These barriers impede health care utilization and negatively affect health status. Parenting A Second Time Around: An Ethnography Of African American Grandmothers Parenting Grandchildren Due To Parental Cocaine Abuse, Kristin Haglund

This study describes a group of six African American grandmothers parenting their grandchildren secondary to cocaine abuse on the part of the parents. It explores the manner in which such parenting affected the grandmothers’ health. Data for this ethnography design were collected through participant observation, field notes, taped interviews, and supplementary data sources. The identification of cultural themes evolved from domain and taxonomic analyses. The themes—parenting a second time around, sacrifice, and God’s presence in daily life—expressed aspects of the grandmothers’ culture. The effects on health varied from none to exacerbation of chronic illnesses. The study results, and its picture …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเปรียบเทียบความพึงพอใจของผู้ป่วยต่อบริการพยาบาลที่ ได้รับและจำนวนวันนอนในโรงพยาบาลก่อนและหลังการใช้มาตรฐานการปฏิบัติการพยาบาลผู้ป่วย โรคเบาหวาน \nประชากร คือ ผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวานที่รับไว้รักษา ณ หอผู้ป่วยใน โรงพยาบาลสมุทรสาคร กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ ผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวานที่รับไว้รักษาในหอผู้ป่วยอายุรกรรมหญิง และหอผู้ป่วยอายุรกรรมชาย โรงพยาบาลสมุทรสาคร จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 75 คน (ก่อนการใช้มาตรฐานการพยาบาล 50 คน และหลังการใช้ มาตรฐานการพยาบาล 25 คน) การเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นแบบเฉพาะเจาะจง \nเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยมี 4 ชุด ได้แก่ มาตรฐานการปฏิบัติการพยาบาลผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวาน แบบสังเกตกิจกรรมการพยาบาล แบบสอบถามความพึงพอใจของผู้ป่วยต่อบริการพยาบาล และแบบบันทึก จํานวนวันนอนในโรงพยาบาล ซึ่งผ่านการตรวจสอบความตรงและความเที่ยงแล้ว \nผลการวิจัยพบว่า \n1. ความพึงพอใจของผู้ป่วยต่อบริการพยาบาล หลังการใช้มาตรฐานการปฏิบัติการพยาบาล ผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวานสูงกว่าก่อนการใช้มาตรฐานการปฏิบัติการพยาบาลผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวาน อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ \nทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 \n2. จํานวนวันนอนในโรงพยาบาลลดลง หลังการใช้มาตรฐานการปฏิบัติการพยาบาลผู้ป่วย โรคเบาหวาน แต่ไม่มีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ

A non-experimental design was used to examine the relationship between health attitudes, beliefs, locus of control and the use of breast cancer screening modalities in elderly Hispanic women in this pilot study. Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality and the Health Belief Model were the supporting theoretical frameworks. Research was conducted at the Amigos del Valle senior centers in Hidalgo County and included 52 English-speaking elderly Hispanic volunteer participants. Instruments used for data collection were the Health Care Attitudes and Beliefs Scale and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale. Results of this study revealed that there appears …

While it was previously thought that this disorder remitted before or during adolescence, it has become well established that many patients will have an illness course that persists well into adulthood. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of Mexican American older adults with type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes. Research design and results: A phenomenological research approach was used when interviewing a sample of ten English speaking Mexican American older adults in Santa Clara County, California. Three collective themes were identified: Emotions prevalent in living with diabetes, diabetes' impact on life, and cultural factors affecting diabetes self care. Discussion/conclusions/implications: A duality of thoughts and experiences in living with diabetes, and the strong influence of culture and its beliefs characterize the life-world of Mexican American non-insulin dependent …

This research study used a pre-test and post-test design to determine if a nursing educational intervention would reduce the potential for falls among the community dwelling elderly. The participants (N=15) were: (a) age 65 or older, (b) mentally competent, (c) predisposed to falls, and (d) living independently. Four instruments were utilized to collect data: (a) the Folstein mini-mental state examination (MMSE), (b) a fall predisposition scale, (c) a home assessment checklist (Tideikaar, 1987), and (d) interview questions. In general, studies of patient compliance with medical advice consistently demonstrate a high level of noncompliance. Not following recommendations can have serious negative consequences in the management of disease. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการปรับตัว ภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ ความสัมพันธ์ ระหว่างปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทำงานของหัวหน้างานกับการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้าย ของพยาบาลวิชาชีพหน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุและฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ รวมทั้งศึกษาตัวแปรที่สามารถพยากรณ์ การปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ กลุ่มตัวอย่างคือ พยาบาลวิชาชีพหน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุและ ฉุกเฉินโรงพยาบาลศูนย์ จำนวน 210 คน ซึ่งได้จากการสุ่มแบบง่าย เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสอบถาม การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทำงานของหัวหน้างาน และแบบสอบถามการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้าย ของพยาบาลวิชาชีพที่ผู้วิจัยสร้างขึ้น ซึ่งตรวจสอบความตรงตามเนื้อหาแล้ว และมีค่าความเที่ยงเท่ากับ .95 และ.94 ตามลำดับ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยหาค่าเฉลี่ยค่าสัมประสิทธิ์การจรณ์และทดสอบทางสถิติ โดยการ ทดสอบไคสแควร์ และวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุคูณ แบบเพิ่มตัวแปรเป็นขั้นตอน \nผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ดังนี้ \n1. ค่าเฉลี่ยการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ หน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุและฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ โดยรวมอยู่ในระดับดี เมื่อพิจารณารายด้าน พบว่าการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของ พยาบาลวิชาชีพด้านการทำหน้าที่ในสังคม ด้านขวัญกำลังใจ และด้านภาวะสุขภาพ อยู่ในระดับดี \n2. การอบรมการป้องกันตัวและการจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทํางานของหัวหน้างาน มีความสัมพันธ์ กับการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 05 \n3. ตัวแปรที่พยากรณ์การปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทําร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ หน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุ และฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 คือ การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการ ทำงานของหัวหน้างาน สามารถพยากรณ์การปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทําร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพได้ร้อยละ 29.9 (R2 = .299) \nได้สมการพยากรณ์ในรูปคะแนนมาตรฐาน ดังนี้ \nการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ = .546 การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทำงานของหัวหน้างาน

Relationship Between Scholastic And Health Behaviors And Reading Level In Adolescent Females, Steven C. Matson, Kristin Haglund

This was a study of 102 adolescent females, 12-20 years of age, presenting to a central city clinic for medical care. Participants completed an oral questionnaire that included demographics, and questions regarding scholastic history, sexual behavior, and substance use. Each subject completed the Accuracy Level Test (ALT), a reading test. The subject's reading test grade level was subtracted from her appropriate grade in school to give a reading delay level (RDL). The mean reading grade level for all subjects was 6.7 ±2.6 and the average reading delay was 4.5 ±2.5 grades. Poor school attenders had greater reading delays (5.8 ±3.4 …

This study examined factors that facilitated or hindered the process of accommodating learning disabled nursing students in the classroom. Surveys were mailed to 300 faculty at associate and baccalaureate degree schools of nursing. The survey focused on faculty members' degree of ease or difficulty in providing accommodations, their perceptions of the adequacy of institutional support, and their own beliefs and understanding of the accommodation process. Analysis of the 109 returned surveys suggest the majority of faculty understood the need for accommodations. Context: This is a replication of a study by Boucher and Lenz (1) concerning knowledge and attitudes of physicians in a Midwestern teaching hospital about complementary therapy. Approval for use of all or any part of the original questionnaire was obtained from the authors. Objective: To discover the attitudes, knowledge, and practice strategies related to complementary therapy by nurse practitioners in the state of California. Conclusion: Overall nurse practitioners view the combination of complementary therapies and allopathic medicine as beneficial to positive outcomes for their clients. Dramatically absent from nursing's historical knowledge and professional recognition are the lives, roles, contributions, and legacies of Christian faith-based nurses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ministry and service of Sister Tutor Dorothy Davis Cook, Church of the Nazarene missionary nurse in the African country of Swaziland 1940 to 1972. The multi-dimensional, multi-task expanded roles manifested in her integration of Christian missionary and nurse were explored and her legacy identified. The purposes of this study were to identify the wound care technique practiced by acute care nurses and the deviations made from sterile technique when dressing a pressure ulcer. A descriptive design using a survey methodology was employed. A questionnaire, the Faller Wound Care Technique Survey, was distributed to a convenience sample of 131 acute care nurses. Forty nurses (30%) responded.

The study findings indicate that the typical wound care technique of dressing a pressure ulcer is a combination of sterile and clean procedures and is not consistent with the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research Guideline recommendations to …

In light of this fact and the widely held belief that sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) have a responsibility to educate others about sexual assault, we developed an educational program for adolescents.

Anorexia during infection is thought to be mediated by immunoregulatory cytokines such as interleukins 1 and 6 and tumor necrosis factor. This article reviews the potential mechanisms of action by which these cytokines are thought to suppress food intake during infection and examines the proposition that blocking of cytokine activity might be one approach to improving food intake of the infected host.

The adolescent pregnancy rate in the U.S. continues to be an issue that concerns nursing and allied health related fields. There has been minimal research published regarding Mexican-American adolescent pregnancy outcomes. The purpose of this was to assess the relationship between social support and acculturation on pregnancy outcomes of Mexican- American adolescents.

Statistical descriptive analysis analyzed the relationships between the demographic data, the Acculturation Rating Scale-II for Mexican-Americans, the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire, and birth outcomes.
