Since the American Nurses' Association (ANA) published its first position paper in 1965 and in 1978 reaffirmed its position on the educational preparation for nursing practice at the ANA National Biennium, the Montana Nurses' Association (MNA) has maintained a consistent position that a minimum of the baccalaureate degree in nursing should be required for licensure as a professional nurse. As of the closure of the 1987 session, the MNA had not yet been able to secure legislation for this requirement. The purpose of this study was to establish the identity of a syndrome related to nursing care of the terminally ill patient, regardless of a malignant or non-malignant disease origin. The sample consisted of completed medical records of 15 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and 15 cancer patients. The commonalities between the two groups are: (1) Defining Characteristics--dyspnea, anxiety, abnormal breath sounds, dry skin, pale skin, pain, anorexia, presence of pressure sores, incontinence, and generalized edema; (2) Nursing Diagnoses--high risk for altered respiratory function, anxiety (individual and family), skin integrity (impaired and high risk for impaired), altered comfort: pain, high …

The purpose of this study was to provide baseline data regarding student perceptions of bureaucratic, professional, and service values and of instructors/preceptors as role models for each model of clinical supervision, traditional versus preceptored. A non-probability, convenience sample included 113 baccalaureate nursing students from two accredited programs in an urban area. Two instruments were used to identify student perceptions of bureaucratic, professional, and service values and of instructors/preceptors as role models. Nurses and other health care providers involved in HIV testing are required to provide pre- and post-test counseling in accordance with guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC, 1992). Clients who test positive are extensively counseled and educated on the nature of the virus, its modes of transmission, the need to practice "safer sex," and the obligation to advise sexual (and needle) partners (Preston, 1989). Some individuals do not inform their partners and this presents an urgent dilemma: Is a nurse bound by a client's right to privacy not to advise that client's partner of his or her HIV …

Made To Fit A Woman: Riding Uniforms Of The Frontier Nursing Service, Donna C. Parker

The riding uniform of the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) conveyed a powerful image of the nurse-midwife as authority figure and professional. In the eastern Kentucky mountains the FNS nurse brought desperately needed health care to the people. Their distinctive, horizon-blue uniform provided instant recognition, and therefore protection, to the nurse-midwife who relied on local residents for help. The sensible, military-styled uniform reinforced the nurse’s authority and reassured patients of receiving expert care. Nursing And Health Care Among Mormon Women: An Analysis Of The Relief Society Magazine, 1914-1930, Sarah Walker Barney

This descriptive study examined the nursing and health care activities of Mormon women in the pre-depression period of 1914 through 1930 through analysis of the official voice of the Relief Society, the Relief Society Magazine. Entries from the Relief Society Magazine that dealt with any nursing or health care topic were coded according to the themes they addressed. Five themes emerged: Nursing, faith, healing, women's health, children's health, and public health.

In each of the themes, the Relief Society Magazine showed that the members of the Relief Society recognized the health care problems of their communities and claimed responsibility …
