Baccalaureate Reentry Students: Effects Of Professional Support On Role Conflict And Role Transition, Ruth N. Grendell Dnsc, Msn, Rn May 1991

Baccalaureate Reentry Students: Effects Of Professional Support On Role Conflict And Role Transition, Ruth N. Grendell Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

An increasing number of registered nurses and other health care providers are entering upper division academic nursing programs to obtain the baccalaureate nursing degree. A path analytic model was developed to examine the interrelationships of multiple roles and focal role commitments, previous education, work experience, and role conflicts perceived by reentry adult students, and the influence of professional support in the subsequent transition to the professional role. Group differences between Registered Nurses (RNs) and military corpsmen were also investigated for the variables of importance. A sample of 206 RNs and 37 U.S. Navy corpsmen (from a current population of 96) …

Managing Patient Care: A Substantive Theory Of Clinical Decision Making In Home Health Care Nursing, Felicitas A. Dela Cruz Dnsc, Ma, Rn May 1991

Managing Patient Care: A Substantive Theory Of Clinical Decision Making In Home Health Care Nursing, Felicitas A. Dela Cruz Dnsc, Ma, Rn

Dissertations

This study investigates the phenomenon of clinical decision making, deriving a grounded substantive theory to explain how home health care nurses make patient care decisions. Despite the continuing shift of health care from acute care settings to the patient's home, little is known about home health care nurses' clinical decision making processes and the factors influencing them. The study employs a field research design using grounded theory based on symbolic interactionism. Data collection at two Visiting Nurse Associations includes participant observation and open-ended interviews of 21 nurses, and document analysis of patients' records and home care nursing practice policies. The …

Student Attitudes Toward Their Role As Patient Advocate, Jacquelyn Heinlein Graven May 1991

Student Attitudes Toward Their Role As Patient Advocate, Jacquelyn Heinlein Graven

Honors Projects

Patient advocacy is a role which has been identified as an important one for nurses. Numerous definitions, models, opinions and philosophical justification of advocacy as a nursing role are described in the literature. The importance of this role is obvious when considering the philosophical dimensions of advocacy. It has been suggested that the concept of advocacy may be the fundamental or theoretical foundation of nursing (Donahue, 1985; Gadow, 1980). Although the role has been discussed for many years there are few established guidelines for implementation and little research exists regarding the advocacy role. The purpose of this descriptive study is …

Organized Nursing In The Silver State: A History Of The Nevada Nurses' Association, Ellen Suzanne Fries Dnsc, Mn, Rnc

Dissertations

Membership in a professional organization traditionally has been considered one of the characteristics of a person avowed to practice a profession. The purpose of this study was to conduct an historical analysis of the Nevada Nurses' Association (NNA) to determine the influence of national, state, and local societal issues on the evolution of the organization. Data was collected from the Nevada Historical Society in Reno, the NNA state office, the Special Collections at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the Nursing Archives at Boston University. Articles in professional and lay literature also provided information. Organization theory and congruence with …

A Comparative Analysis Of Registered Nurse Demand In Tennessee Rural And Urban Hospitals And Nursing Homes, Carol H. Pullen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare Registered Nurse (RN) current and future demand between Tennessee rural and urban licensed hospitals and nursing homes. Comparisons of Registered Nurse demand by principal duty or position and by educational level were also undertaken. The educational level of RNs was examined using the proportion of RNs at each of five educational levels: diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master's, and doctorate. The variables examined were 1988 and 1989 vacancy rates and proportion of budgeted positions, change in vacancy rates and proportions from 1988 to 1989, projected changes in positions and proportions from 1988 to 1992 …

Nurse Leaders: The Relationship Between Return To School And Sex Role Traits, Family Demographics And Household Responsibilities, Mary Lynn Anderson

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were: (a) to describe differences , if any, in sex-role traits, age and number of children, proportionate income, and responsibility for household tasks and childcare between female registered nurses who return to college and those who do not; and (b) to extend the research regarding the adult learner's return to college in the specific area of baccalaureate degree completion by registered nurses. Chi square and analysis of variance of survey data, and interviews were used in determining differences between the student and nonstudent groups.

Four hypotheses were tested. The only hypothesis which was supported was …

Multinational Validation Of Anxiety, Hopelessness, And Ineffective Airway Clearance, Richard J. Fehring, Teresa Fadden, Madeline Wake

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The effective use of nursing diagnosis internationally depends in part on incorporating language and cultural difference into the common language of nursing. International validation studies can provide a basis for this effort. This study tested three diagnoses—anxiety, hopelessness, and ineffective airway clearance—through multinational validation. The Diagnostic Content Validity (DCV) model was used to collect data from critical care nurses in six countries. Defining characteristics rated as critical (> .80) by the total sample were dyspnea for ineffective airway clearance and panic and nervousness for anxiety. No critical defining characteristics for hopelessness were identified. DCV ratios for …

Tympanic Infrared Thermometry For Fullterm And Preterm Neonates, Marianne E. Weiss Apr 1991

Tympanic Infrared Thermometry For Fullterm And Preterm Neonates, Marianne E. Weiss

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Tympanic infrared thermometry has been proposed as a safe, rapid, cost-effective, and reliable method of temperature taking. 1,2 Testing with adults and children have produced results supporting its use in clinical practice. In previous studies conducted with an adult population, excellent results for accuracy and precision were obtained.3,4 Studies of children have primarily focused on the use of tympanic thermometry for use in pediatric office and emergency room settings.5~6 Kenney et al.1 found tympanic thermometry to differ from rectal temperature by .06°C across all ages and by .02°C for subjects less than two months of age. Mean differences …

Norfolk Resource Mothers Program Evaluation, Margaret Moore Konefal Apr 1991

Norfolk Resource Mothers Program Evaluation, Margaret Moore Konefal

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study uses the post-test only design to assess the preliminary effects of a community-based policy initiative, the Norfolk State University Resource Mothers Program (RMP), on the gestational ages, birth weights, and survival rates of infants born to participating adolescent mothers.

The RMP uses experienced mothers or paraprofessionals similar in race and socio-economic status to the participating teenagers. These persons are trained to assist pregnant adolescents and teen parents with nonmedical dimensions of pregnancy and child care. They recruit teens into the RMP, encouraging them to get early prenatal care. Resource Mothers provide teen mothers and their families with practical …
