Staff Education To Enhance Healthcare Providers' Use Of The Phq-9 Assessment Tool, Priscilia Nguh
Staff Education To Enhance Healthcare Providers' Use Of The Phq-9 Assessment Tool, Priscilia Nguh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a common mental health issue that has a substantial impact on people’s well-being and healthcare results. While there is ample evidence of depression’s harmful impact, the difficulty of accurate diagnosis remains. Inadequate screening of depression in primary health clinics results in treatment delays. The PHQ-9 is a tool to diagnose depression, however many clinicians are unfamiliar with its use. As a result, individuals susceptible to depression may not receive timely appropriate management, leading to poor health outcomes and higher healthcare utilization. This practice focused project aimed to understand if staff education would improve healthcare providers’ knowledge regarding use …
Educating Nursing Staff On Urinary Tract Infections, Eldarada Rosamay Searcy
Educating Nursing Staff On Urinary Tract Infections, Eldarada Rosamay Searcy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The primary objective of this doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project was to educate staff on urinary tract infection (UTI) prevention. A gap in practice was identified among nursing staff at an assisted-living facility who lacked current, evidence-based knowledge. This project was conducted to determine whether educating staff on UTI prevention increased their knowledge. Knowles’s adult learning theory and the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model were used as the theoretical framework that guided this project. Eighty-eight healthcare workers at the project site voluntarily participated in this project. Before the education session, a 10-question, multiple-choice pretest was administered to …
Nurse Leaders Promoting Well-Being Through Mindfulness, Laura G. Cockrell
Nurse Leaders Promoting Well-Being Through Mindfulness, Laura G. Cockrell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Becoming a nurse is not just a career but a calling. With this calling comes an ethical duty to the patient, but the duty remains to provide care for oneself. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a strained nursing profession felt the effects of a self-care deficiency. Mindfulness is one self-care tool that can allow nurses to maintain a state of well-being. This project followed Orem’s self-care deficit theory, in which people can use self-care to maintain wellness. The purpose of this project was to develop, deliver, and evaluate an education program for registered nurse leaders on mindfulness activities to address whether …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a worldwide nursing shortage that has been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several factors have contributed to the worsening shortage, including high attrition rates in nursing programs. Retention strategies have been suggested to support nursing students during their education to have success and graduate. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore how nursing students experience retention strategies and their perceived contributions to academic progress. Bandura’s social cognitive theory was the theoretical framework used to guide the study. Data were collected from one-on-one interviews with 12 nursing students recruited using purposeful and snowball sampling. Data were …

Relationship Between Health Education Systems Incorporated Admission Assessment Scores And Student Completion Of A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Colleen Peace
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Math, reading, and vocabulary comprehension are important skills needed to ensure nursing students have a solid foundation on which to develop critical thinking skills to complete a nursing program. One of the common preadmission standardized tests is the Health Education Systems Incorporated Admission Assessment (HESI A2), but little research had been conducted to determine whether there is a correlation between the score on the HESI A2 and readiness to master nursing courses at the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) level and completion of the BSN program. The purposes of this quantitative retrospective study, guided by Jeffreys’s nursing undergraduate retention …

Hemoglobin A1c Values In Patients With Two Types Of Insurance, Patricia Ann White
Hemoglobin A1c Values In Patients With Two Types Of Insurance, Patricia Ann White
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death for adults in the United States. Evidence suggests that not all patients receive the same level of care and discrepancies may be based on the type of health care coverage they have. Providers use Hemoglobin A1C (A1C) as the primary test to indicate treatment success for persons with diabetes. Providers may be ordering this critical lab value differently based on the patient’s insurance plan. In this project, A1C levels in diabetic patients receiving managed care versus traditional Medicare were evaluated. It is important to understand if potential disparities in care exist. The …

Staff Education For Nurses On Patient Education About When To Call The Doctor, Branderly Maliwa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2010, nearly 1 in 5 visits to the emergency department (ED) were categorized as potentially avoidable, resulting in a significant $65 billion increase in health care expenditures and exacerbating ED overcrowding. This project addressed whether a staff education initiative focused on evidence-based patient teaching strategies can enhance nurses’ patient education skills regarding when patients should seek medical attention. Utilizing theories, such as the diffusion of innovation theory and transformational theory, a staff education program was developed in this project informed by evidence-based practice. Credible sources, including nursing databases and professional organizations, were used to identify the gap in nursing …
Evaluating Nurse Medication Education, Nina Marie Carter
Evaluating Nurse Medication Education, Nina Marie Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Inefficient communication between nurses and patients increases the risk of medication errors and jeopardizes patient safety, ultimately resulting in lower patient satisfaction as indicated by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to assess the impact of educating nurses on patient medication education using the teach-back method. Data were collected using HCAHPS survey responses from adult patients with medical conditions who had been discharged from a medical-surgical unit. The 32-item HCAHPS survey was used to capture their perceptions and experiences during their hospital stay. Data analysis entailed comparing HCAHPS …
