Shift Reporting: Educating Nurses On Effective Communication, Cheryl Iris Smith
Shift Reporting: Educating Nurses On Effective Communication, Cheryl Iris Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective communication is vital to nursing practice, as it can ensure quality care delivery and promote positive patient and organizational outcomes. In most organizations, the exchange of information between nurses is done during the end of shift (EOS) reporting. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on effective communication in EOS reporting increased knowledge and confidence among nurses working in a home healthcare setting. Fifty-seven nurses were invited to participate in the educational intervention, and 49 nurses took part for an 85% response rate. The average age of the sample was 45.51 years …

An Educational Program For Nurses To Incorporate Spiritual Care Into Clinical Practice, Alicia J. Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Spiritual well-being is associated with several positive outcomes, including a greater tolerance of the emotional and physical demands of illness. Spiritual care is a basic element of holistic nursing, yet nurses generally lack spiritual care knowledge and abilities and are often unable to satisfy patients’ spiritual care needs. Therefore, nurses are in urgent need of relevant training to enhance their abilities to provide patients with spiritual care. Evidence-based education was lacking at the project site, a privately owned long-term care facility. Primary care attention was focused on the patients’ physical care; however, insufficient attention was being paid to spiritual care, …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Dysautonomia dysfunction (DD) is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system. Over 70 million people suffer from some type of DD, and the average length of time from symptoms to diagnosis is 6 years. Most facilities and providers choose not to treat DD due to the number of symptoms and the difficulty of being able to diagnose correctly. The purpose of this project study was to create guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of DD. The research question addressed the effectiveness of these guidelines to help nurses and providers caring for patients with DD provide better care. Watson’s theory …
Novice Nurses’ Perceptions And Expectations Of What Constitutes Nursing Practice, Mcfrances Catherine George
Novice Nurses’ Perceptions And Expectations Of What Constitutes Nursing Practice, Mcfrances Catherine George
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAfter completing preceptorship programs, novice nurses work independently to provide patient care at the bedside. Novice nurses may leave bedside nursing with a minimum of 1 year of experience, resulting in vacant bedside nurse positions. These vacant positions are a problem because this could lead to low patient satisfaction, higher patient mortality rates, and failure to rescue in emergent cases. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and expectations of nursing practice related to performance, demands, and requirements from novice nurses. Afaf Meleis's 1960 transition theory guided the understanding of novice nurses' perceptions and expectations of nursing …

Developing Resiliency Knowledge In New Graduate Nurses Through Self-Care Education, Keera Byrd
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During the transition to practice, new graduate nurses (NGNs) face conflict and uncertainty influenced by lack of resiliency and self-care knowledge. In a rural hospital, NGNs had minimal standardized guidance during the transition to practice. Without a proper understanding of resiliency and self-care knowledge, NGNs could not adapt to change and risked leaving the profession or harming patients. A self-care staff education project was developed to improve knowledge of resiliency in a group of NGNs. Self-care deficit theory provided the framework for the project. Sources of evidence published between 2017 and 2022 were used as well as previously analyzed data …

Addressing Procedure Cancellation In Elective Surgeries, Vicky Marie Deuboue
Addressing Procedure Cancellation In Elective Surgeries, Vicky Marie Deuboue
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
When conducting elective surgeries, one of the challenges that healthcare providers experience is procedure cancellation. Across various healthcare settings, practitioners are employing relevant strategies to reduce the prevalence of procedure cancellations. The gap addressed in this project was the impact of calling patients to remind them to stay away from NSAIDs and blood thinners a few days prior to elective surgeries to avoid procedure cancellation. The administration of NSAIDs and blood thinners within that period may result in excessive bleeding in patients, which requires attention to improve elective surgery procedure outcomes. Erroneous administration of blood thinners too close to surgical …
