The time has come for figureheads in higher education to address and strengthen Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) in college health. Goals and objectives should be designed to pursue better care and health. Quality Assurance (QA) strives to guarantee that health care providers are adhering to their policies, procedures, and protocols. Compliance may be monitored by intermittent audits, peer review activities, and inspections. QA answers the question, “are we meeting the standards?” This project attempted to provide these standards through the development of a QA/QI policy and procedure which reflects ideologies set forth by the Accreditation Association for …

The Creation Of A Template For The Incorporation Of A Human Milk Analyzer Into A Human Milk Bank, Sarah Rieber Oct 2021

The Creation Of A Template For The Incorporation Of A Human Milk Analyzer Into A Human Milk Bank, Sarah Rieber

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

A milk bank is a nonprofit service that collects, screens, and processes by pasteurization human milk that is donated by mothers not biologically related to the infant in need. Milk is then dispensed to hospitals and private homes to babies with a prescription. A milk bank collects and analyzes human milk, as breast milk is the ideal nutrition source and the gold standard feeding method for infants. Breast milk significantly reduces premature babies' chance of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and offers gastrointestinal protection, increases immunity, decreases the likelihood of asthma, allergies, ear infections, obesity, and respiratory ailments. Some mothers …

Promotion Of Heart Failure Self-Care In The Outpatient Setting, Meredith C. Lubas Oct 2021

Promotion Of Heart Failure Self-Care In The Outpatient Setting, Meredith C. Lubas

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Medical management of chronic heart failure consists of a closely managed medication regimen, cardiovascular testing, interventions, and lifestyle modification, including self-care practices. While medication management, testing, and interventions have concrete guidelines, heart failure self-care education lacks solid guidelines and thus is often poorly defined and variable in practice. Outpatient heart failure treatment typically focuses on medication management more than self-care practices. This project addresses the current lack of heart failure self-care education in the outpatient setting.

For this project, a total of seven patients with heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction received a patient survey in order to assess …

Older adults with type 2 diabetes living in medically underserved areas (MUAs) have unique health and social needs that must be taken into consideration when supporting their type 2 diabetes treatment and management care. Effective treatment and management of type 2 diabetes for older adults living in MUAs requires incorporating the preferences, desires, needs, values, and goals of the person at the center of the care into his/her care plan. Shifting care to be conducive to the treatment and management goals and plans co-created with older adults living in MUAs based on their individual physical, psychological, social, and spiritual preferences, …

Nurses' Perspectives On Pain Management In The Emergency Department, Elizabeth Fitzgerald May 2021

Nurses' Perspectives On Pain Management In The Emergency Department, Elizabeth Fitzgerald

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Over 130 million people seek care in emergency departments (ED) in the United States annually. Most patients who seek treatment in emergency departments are experiencing a painful condition, and as such, ED nurses should have a deep understanding of pain management in the ED. There is limited qualitative research which explores pain management from the nurses’ perspective. The purpose of this study is to describe pain management from the nurse’s perspective. Thorne’s (2005) method of Interpretive Description guided this qualitative inquiry. New knowledge describing the nature of pain management in the ED provides insight into elements which support and impede …

Altruism And Self-Concept In Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Nurses: Is There A Relationship With Reports Of Workplace Violence?, Minnette Markus-Rodden

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Incidents of workplace violence (WPV) are pervasive in healthcare settings. WPV in the US occurs four times more frequently in the healthcare sector than in the private sector. However, the true incidence of WPV in healthcare settings is thought to be much higher secondary to significant under-reporting. The American Nurses Association (2019) reports, while one in four nurses are assaulted, only 20-60% of the incidents are reported. This extensive range is due to the lack of an accepted definition of what constitutes WPV, variable reporting mechanisms, and an overall perception by healthcare workers that WPV is “part of the job”. …

Emergency Room Nurses Knowledge Of And Experience With Health Literacy And Their Patient Teaching Methods, Deborah Kennard

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Health literacy (HL) is the ability one has to understand health information and navigate within the health system. Health literacy is linked to health knowledge and acute and chronic health outcomes. The conceptual model of health literacy outlines the contextual factors related to individual health literacy throughout the health system and the mitigating influence on outcomes. Education is a key factor to health knowledge and behavior changes. Nurses are the primary educators for providing patient teaching and yet research indicates nurses are lacking in knowledge regarding this. One area in the health system where health literacy has a strong effect …

Exploring The Relationship Between And Among Registered Nurses' Spiritual Well-Being, Spiritual Care Perspectives, And Their Provision Of Spiritual Care In Acute Care Settings, Barbara J. Kitchener

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Despite acknowledgment that spiritual care is an essential aspect of holistic nursing care, nurses often feel ill-prepared for, uncomfortable with, and uncertain about providing spiritual care. Studies have indicated that nurses who have a strong sense of their own spiritual well-being and/or a positive perspective [attitude, value, belief] about spiritual care are more inclined to provide spiritual care to their patients. However there is a scarcity of such studies among acute care nurses. This descriptive correlational study aimed to explore relationships between and among acute care nurses’ spiritual well-being (SWB), spiritual care perspectives (SCP), and their provision of spiritual …

Exploring The Relationships Of Power, Attitudes Regarding Intermittent Fetal Monitoring, And Perceived Barriers To Research Utilization With A Labor And Delivery Nurse's Attitude Toward Patient Advocacy, Lisa Heelan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

A problem identified in nursing practice was the routine use of continuous fetal monitoring (CEFM) with low risk laboring women. CEFM is associated with worsened outcomes for the low risk laboring woman with no benefit to the newborn. In addition, this routine practice does not allow most laboring women the right to make an informed choice regarding treatment options. Nursing includes the role of patient advocacy. There was a need to better understand what is associated with a labor and delivery nurse’s attitude toward patient advocacy.

This descriptive correlational research design examined the relationships of power as knowing participation in …
