Using Debriefing As A More Beneficial Approach To Nurses Who Experience Patient Death: An Integrative Review, Sarah Borghi

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: The death of a nurses’ patient can result in effects both personal and professional. A majority of nursing literature addresses how the nurse can assist a patient through grief. Objectives: This integrative literature review investigates if debriefing is more beneficial to nurses who experience patient death than other present approaches.

Method: The health promotion framework used to support this integrative literature review was the …

Method: An integrative literature review was conducted utilizing these online databases: PubMed, The Cumulative …

Effectiveness Of Nurse Practitioners/Physician's Assistants In Triage, Kyle Thomas Bergan Nov 2017

Effectiveness Of Nurse Practitioners/Physician's Assistants In Triage, Kyle Thomas Bergan

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

As the number of patients seen annually by Emergency Departments (EDs) continues to increase, EDs have implemented a number of strategies to improve throughput efficiency, including placing nurse practitioners and/or physician’s assistants in triage. While prior studies have found these strategies to be effective, they have failed to distinguish between whether this intervention truly reduces left without being seen rates or simply encourages elopement, whereby patients who have received a medical screening exam then leave without receiving definitive treatment or disposition. This study reviewed throughput at a site that placed mid-level providers in triage, comparing metrics in the months prior …

Background: The second leading cause of death for the geriatric population in the United States, persons aged 65 years and older, is cancer. The over 65 population comprises most cancer diagnoses and presents a high mortality rate. The terminally-ill, geriatric oncology population also is among the most complex due to comorbidities and other special considerations (McCarthy et al., 2014, p. 197).

Objective: The purpose of this integrative literature review was to answer the following questions: What resources are currently available to help guide the care for geriatric, terminally ill oncology patients? Are the current resources sufficient to determine optimal care …

Strategies For Delivering Sexual Health Education To Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Megan Harris

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurobiological condition leading to cognitive and social deficits within individuals on the spectrum. Adolescence is a time of intense physical and psychosocial changes that prove difficult for youth with ASDs. Teaching should be done to promote health, healthy relationships, and to prevent victimization. Yet, parents report that they lack the knowledge and support to complete this task. The purpose of this literature review was to synthesize research on strategies for teaching sexual health education to …

Grace Peterson Research Colloquium, Emma Pfeiffer

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Mental illness is commonly under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, or untreated, particularly in the elderly population. An expected population increase for those 65 years and older, increased in health care expenses coupled with the moral and ethical obligation of health care providers to promote quality of life at all ages makes investigation to alternative treatments in this population is worth investigating. The purpose of this literature review is to synthesize existing studies to clarify the following questions: What are the effects of pet therapy on those experiencing signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety? Why is pet therapy still lagging in validated studies, …

Cultural Competency In Effective Medical Missions, Abigail Drogosz Nov 2017

Cultural Competency In Effective Medical Missions, Abigail Drogosz

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Every year medical professionals and volunteers travel internationally to provide services to individuals in need. However, some times these trips can be more detrimental than helpful. This can be due to the fact that these trips are self-serving in which they provide value for visitors without meeting the local community needs (Unite for Site, 2015). Secondly, they raise unmet expectations due to language barriers or lack of medical training for particular diseases. In addition, they may provide culturally irrelevant or inadequate care to the communities they are serving. Lastly, these missions may not follow current standards of health …

Sarah Navarro

Faculty Sponsor: Elizabeth Hartman, PhD

Sensitivity Of Pain Assessment For Critically Ill, Nonverbal Adults, Ruta Jarmontaviciute Nov 2017

Sensitivity Of Pain Assessment For Critically Ill, Nonverbal Adults, Ruta Jarmontaviciute

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Patient’s self-report is a “gold standard” in assessing pain, yet it is not always possible in critically ill, nonverbal adults. In such cases, the use of reliable behavioral pain assessment tools is paramount to patient outcomes. However, the literature presented conflicting information regarding behavioral pain assessment tools and their sensitivity in assessing pain in critically ill, nonverbal adults.

Objective: This integrative research aimed to explore the effectiveness and barriers in the clinical guidelines of the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) and the Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS) assessment tools for the detection of pain in critically ill, nonverbal adults. …
