Nurse burnout has been strongly associated with decreased patient satisfaction and reduced retention rates in the novice registered nurse. This phenomenon is exacerbating the already rising global nursing shortage. A strong correlation is established between novice registered nurses who endure repeated or multiple triggers, such as unsafe staffing ratios, inadequate preceptorship, and ineffective leadership to those who succumb to burnout. Nursing burnout has negatively affected the nursing profession for many years, and since the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears to be worse. Mindfulness is a practice that has been used for decades, however, it is gaining more attention in the nursing realm. Mindfulness consists of being present in a moment without judgment. Burnout is a widespread phenomenon characterized by a reduction in energy that manifests in exhaustion, lack of inspiration, and feelings of frustration which may lead to reduced work efficacy and multiple absences. In the nursing profession, long hours, the pressure of quick decision-making, and the stress of caring for patients who may have poor outcomes may contribute to burnout. Objective: Over the last few years, the pattern of increased burnout, operating under adverse environments, and being under- appreciated as led to a decrease in job satisfaction among emergency room providers(physicians, advanced practicing nurses, and physician assistants). Therefore, this scholarly project examined if small focused group discussions among emergency room providers will help combat poor job satisfaction scores and increase the well-being of the practitioners that keep the emergency room functioning. The purpose of this integrative review is to identify factors that lead to job dissatisfaction among nurses working in U.S. hospitals and learn how patients experience poorer health outcomes as a result. Many factors including inadequate staffing, workplace bullying, violence, low pay, and hostile working conditions within hospital systems influence nurses’ intent to leave and affect the care quality provided to patients.
