Nursing research has a long history, beginning with the first nursing researcher--Florence Nightingale. As research continues to evolve, the dissemination of findings is important. Nurses must have have an understanding of how to critically read and appraise research articles in order to assess the value of the findings.

Mapping The Literature Of Pediatric Nursing: Update And Implications For Library Services, Carol L. Watwood

Objective

The purpose of this study was to identify core journals and other types of literature cited in four major pediatric nursing journals and to characterize coverage of these resources in major bibliographic databases. The study was part of the “Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project” of the Medical Library Association's Nursing and Allied Health Resource Section. It updates a similar analysis published in 2006 and determines whether citation patterns have changed over time.

Methods

Cited references from articles published in 4 pediatric nursing journals between 2011 and 2013 were collected. Cited journal titles were ranked according to number of …

Attrition can be a serious problem for nursing programs and students. Loss of students during a nursing program or through NCLEX failure is a waste of resources and results in inefficiency in the production of nurses for the workforce. Using data from 341 students admitted over a three-year period, the goal of this study was to determine which factors best predicted student success in a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. These factors were then used to develop an admission formula which was tested retroactively to determine its ability to differentiate between successful and non-successful students. Faith Community Nurses have common beliefs, principles, ethics, and a level of trust with their population making them well-positioned to positively impact parishioners. FCNs provide support for people’s spiritual needs and nursing care. This makes FCNs a vital and approachable resource for parishioners when seeking advisement and assistance regarding their mental healthcare. In this article, we define red flags as suicidal idealization, mania, and psychosis, which if not promptly assessed and referred for treatment may result in serious harm or death. A Faith Community Nurse (FCN) is tasked with promoting health within a faith-based community. As with any nursing role, the FCN must keep abreast of current issues and be aware of informational resources to keep his/her practice relevant. The area of focus in this issue is type 2 diabetes. During 2014, the global prevalence of diabetes among adults was estimated at 9%. There are numerous risk factors for type 2 diabetes including both modifiable and non-modifiable. Abstract

A significant health burden exists related to type 2 diabetes. Evidence-based solutions through research are needed to improve diabetes outcomes. Faith community diabetes education can be utilized to provide the knowledge needed to manage the disease. The purpose of the current study was to determine if a faith-based community diabetes education program including health coaching can increase self-efficacy in people with type 2 diabetes.

This pilot study used a pre-test/post-test format for data collection. Following diabetes education for all participants, half of the group received health coaching and the other half no further intervention. A survey consisting of two …

Implementing Faith Community Nursing Interventions To Promote Healthy Behaviors In Adults, Donna M. Callaghan

Purpose: To report the implementation of faith community nursing interventions to promote healthy behaviors in adults. Callaghan (2015) reported the development of this intervention, which was based on previous studies that support the importance of spiritual growth on the initiative and responsibility for self-care across the life span (Callaghan, 2003, 2005, 2006). The intervention also included strategies to increase self-efficacy of healthy behaviors. The results of three separate implementations of the health promotion intervention are presented in this report.

This paper compares the aggressiveness of nursing behavioral intentions in the care of the end-of-life patient between 1989 and 2014. Using a comparison design the effects of patient age, presence of a DNR order and nursing unit norms on the aggressiveness of nursing behavioral intentions were documented in 1989 and again in 2014. The results were compared for significant changes over time. Based on the results of this study, it appears that there has been a significant increase in aggressiveness of nursing behavioral intentions in the care of the end of life patient, even if the patient has a …

Background. Worldwide, workplace sexual violence affects more than 50% of women; 33% are harassed, 8% are raped, and approximately 40% of workplace deaths are the result of homicide. In the United States, the majority of these deaths are related to intimate partner violence. Background. Sexual assault affects one in five women, worldwide, across their lifetime; approximately 22 million women in the United States (US). Only twenty-seven percent of the assaults are reported to the police. In the US, approximately 8% of the sexual assaults on women occur in the workplace; late hours of the night or early morning hours, working alone, working in isolated areas, working with the public, and working in a mobile workplace place women at an increased risk. The plain Anabaptists are thought to differ from mainstream U.S. health care beliefs and practices. Many non-Anabaptist health care providers have limited knowledge of the specific health beliefs and preferences of Anabaptists, which can lead to misunderstandings. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to collect information from Anabaptist community members related to health care beliefs and preferences in their communities. Participants, who were members of various plain Anabaptist communities, completed a questionnaire containing open-ended questions about health issues. With the growth of Faith Community Nursing (FCN), one topic that needs further exploration is documentation. This includes the use of electronic medical records (EMRs). Nurses play a vital role in the planning and implementation of EMRs in the acute care setting and will also play a key role in Faith Community Nursing Programs that stand alone or partner with a health care agency.
