The purpose of this study was to identify the variables that influence the frequency of personal respiratory protection (PRP) use by workers in swine confinement buildings (SCBs). The study was designed to answer four research questions: 1). What is the validity and reliability of the Personal Respiratory Protection Survey (PRPS)? 2). How frequently do workers in SCBs wear PRP? 3). How do demographics, occupational histories, and self-reported respiratory health histories influence the use of PRP in SCBs? and 4). What are the relationships of the constructs (benefits, barriers, susceptibility, severity, norms) to the use of PRP by workers in SCBs? …

The Health Enhancement of the Rural Elderly (HERE) project is a federally funded grant project designed to empower the rural elderly in Butler and Edmonson counties to maximize their use of the health care system. This project was developed after identifying the needs of approximately 25% of the population in the U.S. that reside in rural areas. Of this population in rural Kentucky, 14-15% is 65 years or older (U.S. Bureau of Census, 2000). A higher incidence of chronic diseases, disabilities, difficulties with daily living activities, and cutbacks in social services have been identified as factors causing this population to …

Manuscript Collection Finding Aids

Finding aid and scans (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 1378. Journal, 1925, 79p., kept by Anita B. Casselberry, Cleveland, Ohio, while serving a few weeks as a public health nurse under the direction of Alice Lloyd in Knott County, Kentucky. Includes newspaper clippings, 1940-1941, religious pamphlets, and photos, 1925. A letter from Casselberry also recounts the reaction to an N.R.A. (National Recovery Administration) sticker on her car as “the mark of the beast.”

Much information has been published regarding herbal medication use. However, information is limited on how nurses incorporate this information into their practice, communicate information to the client, or collaborate with physicians to prevent drug/herbal interactions. The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and knowledge of nurses regarding the use of herbal remedies at various levels of practice. According to Henderson's Theory of Basic Care Components, the nurse has a responsibility to assess client needs, help clients meet health needs, and provide a safe environment for the client to perform activities unaided. Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of external beam radiation therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of applying an aloe vera based skin gel to the target area skin in preventing the development of radiation dermatitis to postlumpectomy/ mastectomy patients receiving external beam radiation therapy in an ambulatory radiation-oncology clinic in the southeastern region of the United States. In this descriptive correlational study, a convenience sample of willing participants (n=18) was followed from initial treatment through the one-month follow-up examination to assess the intensity of their skin reaction.
