Changes in the National Council of State Boards of Nursing along with other factors influence graduates’ successful completion of a nursing program and the licensing examination. Literature is scarce in the area of examining stu-dent perceptions of preparing for and taking the NCLEX-RN examination. Our study sought to fill this gap in knowledge by conducting a focus group and interviews with individuals who passed the NCLEX-RN on their first at-tempt and those who did not. The American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing convened an Invitational Summit of national leaders to assist with strategic planning for promulgation of the care coordination and transition management (CCTM™) model. The conference was devoted to CCTM and the roles of registered nurses (RNs) across the care continuum to ensure safety and quality health care. The specific emphasis was on embedding the CCTM RN in healthcare policy and payment reform, as well as integration into academic and ongoing education across all care settings and specialties.

Abstract

Adolescents with special health care needs encounter barriers and challenges during transition to adult health care that have the potential to impact health outcomes and satisfaction with the experience. The use of transitional care services can provide resources and support throughout the transition process to the adolescent and their parent/caregiver. This descriptive survey study was conducted to evaluate adolescent and/or parent/caregiver satisfaction with the transitional care services provided by an urban, academic, pediatric health care facility. Objective: The present study aims to examine the relationships between and among cancer treatment-related decisional conflict, quality of life, and comorbidity in older adults with cancer.

Methods: A convenience sample of 200 older adults was recruited from outpatient medical oncology and radiation oncology practices in the northeastern United States. A cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study design was used employing a survey method. Concept-based curricula are being implemented in nursing education as a means to shift the emphasis from content to an emphasis on concepts and conceptual learning (Giddens & Brady, 2007). This paradigm shift requires concomitant changes in how faculty teach and how students learn. In concept-based curricula, teachers use student-centered learning activities, such as case studies, questions, or problems to engage students in active learning (Giddens, Caputi, & Rodgers, 2015).

BACKGROUND: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a common and costly quality problem, and their prevention is a national priority. A decade ago, researchers identified an evidence-based bundle of practices that reduce CLABSIs. Compliance with this bundle remains low in many hospitals.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess whether differences in core aspects of work environments-workload, quality of relationships, and prioritization of quality-are associated with variation in maximal CLABSI bundle compliance, that is, compliance 95%-100% of the time in intensive care units (ICUs).

Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) final rule required that nursing homes (NHs) develop an infection control program that includes an antibiotic stewardship component and employs a trained infection preventionist (IP). The objectives of this study were to provide a baseline assessment of (1) NH facility and infection control program characteristics associated with having an infection control deficiency citation and (2) associations between IP training and the presence of antibiotic stewardship policies, controlling for NH characteristics. Introduction: There is little information regarding use of expected well care by infants diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) post initial discharge. We describe expected and unexpected utilization of care by infants with NAS in the first year of life.

Methods: A de-identified State of Delaware Medicaid data set was obtained. Included were all infants with an ICD-9 code for NAS from 01/01/2012-12/31/2014. All associated medical claims were extracted for one year after birth. Utilization rates of primary care, immunizations, urgent or emergency care, and re-hospitalization were quantified.

Prisons provide an ideal learning experience to prepare prelicensure students with the knowledge and skill set needed for practice in the 21st century. Beginning descriptive evidence demonstrates that correctional health is an innovative community resource to educate nursing students in today's changing model of health care delivery and practice. This article shares results from a retrospective analysis of the perceptions and experiences of nursing students during their community clinical rotation in an all-male maximum security prison.

Challenges in Securing Community Nursing Rotation Sites Eighteen years of providing clinical placement for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students has demonstrated that community-based educational opportunities are shrinking due to:

•Increased regulatory requirements

•Competing numbers of nursing schools

•Increasing student enrollment

•Decreasing availability of community resources capable and willing to precept students

These issues present challenges to preparing students for nursing practice. A college of nursing at an urban, academic health center found a solution by working with unexpected partners – maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers.

From 1999-2013, the nationwide incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) due to maternal drug use rose from 1.5/1000 to 6/1000 hospital births. There is a dearth of information regarding what happens to these children when they are discharged. The purpose of this Practice Inquiry Project is to utilize existing Delaware Medicaid data to retrospectively explore the utilization of services and gaps in care for the infant with NAS in the first year of life. This research study was designed to examine accelerated, second-degree prelicensure baccalaureate graduates’ perceptions of the andragogical practices employed by faculty that prepared students best to begin practice as entry level professional nurses. Through listening to the voices of graduates an emic perspective of the perceptions of the second-degree graduates emerged. Six key themes were identified related to the educational experience.

In the US, on any given day, 1 of every 25 inpatients has at least one HAI, resulting in significant health, social, and economic consequences.¹ It is estimated that up to 70% of some types of HAIs are preventable through improved infection prevention and control (IPC) practices of health care providers.²

I am writing in response to “Pharmacologic Treatment of Opioid Addiction During Pregnancy” by Keough and Fantasia (2017). The article nicely compares and summarizes the use of methadone and buprenorphine to treat substance use in pregnant women. I was dismayed, however, by the sections regarding neonatal considerations and breastfeeding, which contained some problematic assertions and some inaccurate conclusions.

OBJECTIVE: To compare usage patterns and outcomes of a nurse practitioner-staffed medical ICU and a resident-staffed physician medical ICU.

DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of 1,157 medical ICU admissions from March 2012 to February 2013.

SETTING: Large urban academic university hospital.

SUBJECTS: One thousand one hundred fifty-seven consecutive medical ICU admissions including 221 nurse practitioner-staffed medical ICU admissions (19.1%) and 936 resident-staffed medical ICU admissions (80.9%).

Text Messaging In The Patient-Centered Medical Home To Improve Glucose Control And Retinopathy Screening., Janice M Miller, Ann G. Phalen, Albert Crawford, Anthony Frisby, Barry S. Ziring

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a text messaging program (TMP) to improve glucose control, retinopathy screening (RS) rates, and self-care behaviors in patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.

Methods: A single-group design with a quasi-systematic random sample (n=20) received educational/exhortational text messages on their cellular phones for 3 months. Subjects, 12 of whom identified as a minority ethnicity, were mostly male, aged 27-73 years.

Results: Glucose control and RS rates improved significantly. Subjects (>70%) reported changes in self-care behaviors.

Conclusion: Leveraging ubiquitous technology, a TMP for patients with limited access to healthcare education, holds promise
