Background: Former Vanderbilt University Medical Center nurse, RaDonda Vought, was charged with criminally negligent homicide in March 2022 for a fatal drug error. Ms. Vought’s license was revoked and she was sentenced to three years of probation.

Purpose/aim: This poster presentation aims to inform attendants of the ethical principles involved in medication administration error reporting and the concepts of a Just Culture. This poster also aims to inform attendants of the American Nurses Association’s (ANA’s) and National League for Nursing’s (NLN’s) perspectives on the RaDonda Vought case, outcomes, error reporting, and Just Culture.

Background: Registered nurses (RN) working in acute-care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic reported unprecedented stress. Walking between 7000-10,000 steps each day offers positive benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, and reduction in overall mortality risk. Additionally, the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults should engage in 75 -150 minutes per week of moderate to intense activity for health benefits. Yet, some research suggests that number of steps taken per week decreased and time spent sedentary increased during the first year of the onset of COVID-19 compared to the year prior. Background: Magnet® status is a highly sought-after award validating a healthcare organization’s commitment to a sustainable nursing culture of excellence. One requirement includes having nurses conduct a minimum of three research studies as principal investigators within each 48-month review period. Additionally, research dissemination activities such as publication of study findings are required. Because research skills are not taught in traditional prelicensure nursing programs, Magnet® research requirements have incentivized healthcare organizations in pursuit of designation to strengthen research infrastructure.

Purpose: To characterize relationships between a nurse research mentor, Magnet® designation, and nursing research-related resources in a 53-hospital health system.

Background: Cultural competence is central to the development of healthy nurse-patient relationships. Considered an essential standard of professional practice for nursing and multiple disciplines world-wide, the use interdisciplinary materials from anthropology, philosophy and theology broaden the lens through which students can critically think about human diversity. Empathy is the ability to see oneself in the situation of another and to take actions on behalf of that individual based on that perception. However, empathy has been shown to decrease in nursing education and continues to do so in nursing practice. Importantly, aspects of empathy have been shown to be teachable. This scholarly practice project examined whether an innovative simulation would increase empathy in prelicensure nursing students. Nurse burnout is a widespread problem globally. Nurse burnout is not only exacerbating nurses’ physical and mental health, but also affects patient satisfaction as well as hospital performance. Due to negative outcomes of nurse burnout, high turnover rates, and excessive costs of hiring nurses, there is a growing body of literature about factors leading to burnout and interventions to control and reduce nurse burnout. Background: COVID-19 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) specific treatment guidelines were released by the National Institute for Health and the World Health Organization in 2020 for adults with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). With 42% of COVID‐19 infected patients developing ARDS pneumonia, medical centers increased ECMO treatment capacity to meet pandemic-related demand. The rising treatment demands in adult populations led organizations to implement strategies to increase ECMO treatment availability in adult intensive care units.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to deploy an evidence-based adult ECMO program in a surgical intensive care unit (SICU) by March 2020.

Background/Intro:

Nursing leaders at acute care hospitals often lack knowledge of how best to support nurses who wish to engage in nursing research and evidence-based practice. Inclusion of the nurses who have direct bedside contact with patients is integral in improving patient outcomes.

Problem Description-Patient facing nurses have cited a lack of leadership support in conducting research. A lack of research knowledge by nursing leaders has also previously been identified. I determined to learn other barriers nursing leaders would identify and if a brief module on basics of nursing research might mitigate these barriers.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic globally impacted healthcare due to surges in infected patients and respiratory failure. The pandemic escalated nursing burnout syndrome (NBS) across the workforce, especially in critical care environments, potentially leading to long-term negative impact on nurse retention and patient care.

Objectives: To compare self-reported burnout scores of frontline nurses caring for COVID-19 infected patients with burnout scores captured before the pandemic and in non-COVID-19 units from two prior studies.

Background: Blood administration is a high risk, low volume, complex procedure. It has strict regulatory requirements for documentation of at least 15 elements over the course of the procedure. There are frequently findings for deficient documentation during survey. Manual audits are time consuming and inaccurate. Every facility in the Providence system faces the same challenges to audit for compliance.

Problem: Detecting the rate of compliance for documentation of blood administration manually is difficult. Nursing documentation for blood administration is often incomplete. Manual audits are labor-intensive and have proven to have limited impact to increase documentation compliance.
