Depression remains poorly diagnosed and treated in the general population as well as in patients with chronic illness including end-stage renal disease. Referrals to mental health providers and treatment for patients with depressive symptoms are suboptimal leading to decreased adherence to dialysis treatments, increased hospitalizations, and increased mortality. A review of the literature supports intentional screening for depression in the chronically ill population that can easily be incorporated into routine health examinations or, in the case of maintenance hemodialysis patients, the patient’s treatment time. The purpose of this prospective, descriptive pilot study is to establish a baseline measure for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in patients aged 65-80 years following elective surgery with general anesthesia (GA). Older adults scheduled for elective surgery routinely undergo GA with a combination of volatile and intravenous anesthetic agents. Current literature shows that patients aged 65-80 who receive GA agents are at increased risk for MCI postoperatively. Data also suggests that further studies are necessary in order to more completely evaluate alternative anesthesia techniques and agents that may prove to reduce the risk and incidence of MCI associated with anesthesia …

Nearly 20% of the nursing workforce practice in rural settings. The literature suggest rural nursing staff do not have the same opportunities for continuing education or the implementation of research in their practice as do nursing staff of larger urban hospitals. Rural nursing staff face unique barriers in obtaining the needed continuing education and research. Identifying and accommodating these barriers is needed. Recently there has been much attention focused on the shortage of nurses in the United States with an anticipated deficit in excess of one million registered nurses by 2020. Practical and theoretical explanations for the shortage often cite a lack of nursing faculty as a contributing factor to the crisis. Baccalaureate nursing programs from the Southern Regional Educational Board whose NCLEX-RN pass rates met or exceeded the national pass rate for 2006-2008 consecutively and who had at least 60 candidates sit for the exam annually were studied to determine the practices utilized to have success on the NCLEX-RN. Fifty programs met the inclusion criteria and were invited to participate. Thirty programs accepted the invitations to participate in the study. Recorded telephone interviews with baccalaureate nursing program directors, chairs, or their designee were conducted. Most of the nursing programs were upper division traditional programs. Some also offered 2nd degree accelerated option. …

An ex post facto study was conducted to determine whether any relationship exists between remediation post Reach Exit Exam (E2) failure and NCLEX-RN success of graduates of baccalaureate nursing programs. Data was gathered from responses to the seventh annual validity study (V7S) offered to deans and directors of nursing programs by the Director of Research for Elsevier, Incorporated. Data focused on test groups which received administration of the E2 between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007. Responses from 28 baccalaureate nursing programs were included in the study.
