A mid-sized hospital in Alameda County would like to increase its Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and System (HCAHPS) scores by improving the patient care experience. The specific aim for this project is that by August 2018, the implementation of daily leadership rounding in the ICU will result in an increase of patient satisfaction HCAHPS scores by 5%. The project team used the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle to guide the implementation of leadership rounding. The use of patient simulation as a strategy to educate nurses on the prevention of these events offers two modes of learning: 1) experiential learning through simulation and 2) reflection through debriefing. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine if student nurse participation in root cause analysis has the potential to reduce harm to patients from medication errors by increasing student nurse sensitivity to signal and responder bias.

Background: Schools of nursing have traditionally relied on strategies that focus on individual characteristics and responsibility to prevent harm to patients. The modern patient safety movement encourages utilization of systems theory strategies like Root Cause Analysis (RCA). The aim of this project was to determine if an educational intervention utilizing Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring influences nurses’ level of awareness and practice of loving kindness to self and others. Watson’s paradigm of transpersonal caring is presented as a means to provide the compassionate care needed by patients with chronic pain, who are vulnerable to the comorbidities of depression and anxiety and often have poor outcomes. Introduction: Although death is common in emergency departments, there is limited research regarding ED design as an obstacle to end-of-life care. This study identifies emergency nurses’ recommendations regarding ways designs have negative or positive impact on care for dying patients and their families.

Methods: A 25-item questionnaire was sent to a national random sample of 500 emergency nurses. Inclusion criteria were nurses who could read English, worked in emergency departments, and had cared for at least 1 patient at the end of life (EOL). Responses were individually reviewed and coded.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge of nursing staff on a cardiology unit before and after the implementation of heart failure specific education. Methods: Forty staff nurses on a cardiology unit at a single institution were given The Nurses Knowledge of Heart Failure Education Principles Survey (NKHFEP), a validated tool to assess nursing knowledge of heart failure. The “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery” (ERAS) protocol was implemented at the Veterans Administration Medical Center – St. Louis prior to formal education of direct-care registered nurses (RNs), a major stakeholder group. Background: The ubiquitous use of electronic health records (EHRs) during medical office visits using a computer monitor and keyboard can be distracting and can disrupt patient-health care provider (HCP) nonverbal eye contact cues, which are integral to effective communication. Provider use of a remote medical scribe with face-mounted technology (FMT), such as Google Glass, may preserve patient-HCP communication dynamics in health care settings by allowing providers to maintain direct eye contact with their patients while still having access to the patient’s relevant EHR information. The CNL project was conducted on the 56-bed adult medical-surgical units in a trauma center. There were total eight fall incidences from January to February. The SWOT analysis, stakeholder analysis, pre-educational survey, cost-effective analysis and root-cause analysis suggested in-depth training on multifaceted fall prevention. This study aimed to examine the time to complete fall risk assessment tools, Hendrich II Fall Risk Assessment Model (Hendrich II) and Patient Mobility Assessment Tool (PMAT) in a San Francisco Bay Area hospital. In addition, this study examined the efficacy of patients’ perceptions of their own mobility, when asked as part of the fall risk assessment process. Data was collected and analyzed on seventy-four patients across four nursing units, Medical, Surgical, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical/Oncology. Hazardous drug (HD) administration used to be contained in controlled-healthcare settings, however, the introduction of HDs for home administration has become a growing area of concern for home health agencies. The objectives of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) project aims to improve homecare nurses' knowledge of HDs and improve competency with personal protective equipment (PPE). The microsystem provides short-term homecare services for acute and chronically-ill patients. Objective: Evidence based literature has illustrated that patient education can improve patient outcomes. In this translational study, a perioperative neurosurgery education bundle was implemented in patients undergoing elective cranial surgery to determine whether this patient centered education improved patient satisfaction, patient knowledge and patient outcomes. Method: This quality improvement study implemented an education bundle for elective cranial surgery patients both at a preoperative clinic visit and prior to discharge. Patients completed the Patient Interview Teaching Guide (PTIG) questionnaire and Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8) at the first postoperative visit.
