Rural pregnant women with substance use disorder (SUD) are an understudied vulnerable population that often experiences poor pregnancy outcomes (Higgins et al., 2019; Jumah, 2016; Kramlich et al., 2018; Shaw et al., 2015). Despite the high prevalence and high burden associated with SUD, rural women are less likely than non-pregnant women to seek addiction treatment and complete an outpatient treatment program during pregnancy (Shaw et al., 2015). Objective: The purpose of this body of work was to explore relationships among emotional intelligence (EI) and interprofessional (IP) competency domains to enhance IP team dynamics and communication.

Background: Decentralization of healthcare delivery may hinder effective handoffs creating opportunity for miscommunication of vital information and subsequent medical errors. Fostering effective communication is paramount for IP teams; however, differing communication styles can promote misunderstanding and conflict. Contributing to overcrowded conditions are those presenting with dyspnea, who are nearly 4 million in number. ED crowding has serious implications. Exploring and implementing evidence-based methods to alleviate congestion is critical. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of death from cancer in the United States, despite the availability of several high-quality screening options. Multiple barriers to CRC screening have been identified, including cost (non-insured), younger age, racial or ethnic minority, recent immigration to the U.S. (non-English speaking), fear or distrust of the healthcare system and rural residence. Addressing health equity within underserved populations requires improved access to CRC screenings per evidence-based guidelines.

Context: The 2020 Standards for the Accreditation of Professional Athletic Training Programs from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education require programs to include at least one immersive clinical experience (ICE) in their clinical education curricula. Yet, it is unknown whether ICEs provide more opportunities and benefits than nonimmersive clinical experiences (N-ICEs). The purpose of this study was to compare characteristics of patient encounters (PEs) that occurred during ICEs and N-ICEs.

Design: Multisite panel design.

Setting: Twelve professional programs (5 undergraduate, 7 graduate).

Local Problem: An ophthalmic microsystem in the Northeastern United States is experiencing increased demand for services and decreased access to their retina section. Oftentimes, the emergency department (ED) is the only medical care this population receives. The lack of preoperative warming has a direct relationship to perioperative hypothermia complications which include, but are not limited to: increased infection rate, coagulopathies, and increased myocardial oxygen consumption; all contributing to poor patient and facility outcomes. According to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), the number of falls in inpatient psychiatric units is 13-25 per 1,000 patient days, compared to 4 per 1,000 days for medical-surgical units. Utilizing and integrating best evidence-based research to improve nursing care is a core responsibility of a nurse. Implementing best nursing practices leads to better patient outcomes and patient experiences. Through research, specific interventions that can reduce the incidence of delirium in critically ill patients were uncovered. Through utilization of theoretical framework, and multiple evidence-based research articles, a protocol was formed to initiate in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray, KY. This protocol consists of a multi-component intervention plan to hopefully decrease incidence of ICU delirium.

Debriefing, an important aspect of students’ clinical experience, is a reflective, critical thinking analysis and communication strategy that provides rapid feedback after either a simulated or genuine clinical event. To teach this higher-level critical thinking skill throughout the learning process, nursing programs require specific methodology and faculty expertise.
