Introduction: The 2023 Part 1 summary reviews research on wellness in healthcare professionals published outside of JWellness from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023.

Methods: Editors conducted a Boolean search of titles and abstracts in PubMed utilizing keyword identifiers pairing healthcare personnel (providers, nurses, and other staff) with a well-being metric. Of 416 relevant articles, an intriguing and innovative 30 were selected for inclusion, with two additional articles manually curated.

Literature in Review: This sample of the recent literature into healthcare professional wellness included multiple targeted interventions and studies of resilience. Main themes that emerged include: positive systematic healthcare …

Military service members incur combat and noncombat related injuries which may lead to acute or chronic pain. Treatment of these conditions with opioids may place them at risk for opioid use disorder (OUD). Opioid related overdoses among the military community increased by 50% from 2010 to 2019. The Sole Provider Program (SPP) is recommended to address the risks of OUD among Veterans receiving care at military installations. The goal of this evidence-based project was to ensure that all persons who receive opioid prescriptions at a military facility were evaluated for inclusion into a SPP and prescribed naloxone. Introduction: Intravenous (IV) vancomycin requires therapeutic drug monitoring and line placement and may prolong hospital stay. Linezolid requires less monitoring, is orally bioavailable, and may expedite transitions of care. This study assessed the impact of a pharmacist-led antibiotic timeout for the transition from IV vancomycin to oral linezolid. Methods: This single-center, quasi-experimental study included admitted adult patients receiving IV vancomycin for over 48 hours. Patients receiving vasopressors, of immunocompromised status, or with specific antibiotic indications were excluded. The primary outcome was the pharmacist intervention acceptance rate. Globally, there were about 229 million cases of malaria in 2022. The sub-Saharan African region accounted for 92% of the reported cases and 94% of deaths. Nigeria had the highest number of malaria cases and deaths, representing 27% of global cases. This scholarly project was a case study guided by the political determinants of health. Triangulation of data using thematic analysis was used to identify the political determinants of malaria in Nigeria and to understand how the concept of interaction contributes to the persistence of the disease. Due to the underutilization of screening mammography, African American women (AAW) are more likely to experience negative health outcomes after receiving a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis than White Women (WW). The purpose of this article is to examine the roles of the media, health community and the African American church and pastor and their potential impact in AAW screening decisions. Fifteen AAW, ages 45 and older, were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview. On average, someone in the United States has a myocardial infarction every 40 seconds, and someone dies of a stroke every 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Studies support coronary artery disease as a significant contributor to cardiac arrest in a non-hospital setting (Yannopoulos et al., 2019). Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) is the leading cause of primary hypothyroidism in the United States. In HT, there is an infiltration by lymphocytes which leads to the production of autoantibodies against the thyroid gland. Throughout this integrative review, the aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation and dietary management as adjunct treatments in HT. Results: Research supports that transition to practice (TTP) programs have been successful in new graduate RN retention rates. It was hypothesized that in hospitalized adults over the age of 65 the use of non-slip socks compared to other footwear would not decrease the risk of falls. This EBP project evaluated if in hospitalized adult patients on Sands 800 does the use of a restraint management bundle decrease the use of restraints during the inpatient admission compared to current restraint practices. In the SICU, restraint usage is an initial response instead of last intervention. This culture of care concerns nurses and providers. Pre-visit planning is the process of collecting and organizing data prior to a patient appointment. The pre-visit planning process requires a team member to call the patient a week before the appointment through the use of a questionnaire form. This helps identify incomplete tests, screenings, immunizations and referrals that are currently outstanding. The pre-visit process results in scheduling needed appointments and lab work as well as gathering necessary information from the patient to streamline their upcoming visit. The use of pre-visit planning may result in improved patient satisfaction and decreased physician time with each patient visit.

Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) contribute to longer length of stay, poor clinical outcomes and increased healthcare costs.

A literature review showed that the implementation of visual cues to identify patients who require assistance with mobility and positioning in addition to the implementation of scheduled turn teams could have a positive health impact for the patients at RGH and reduce HAPIs incidence. Research suggests that educating unlicensed staff to recognize patient Braden Scale scores and to provide daily care based on risk factors for skin breakdown may lead to improved clinical outcomes.

Photos of surgical wounds when included in documentation can assist the clinician in providing appropriate care and help engage the patient in their care. Incorporating photos into documentation provides a consistent timeline of wound changes and can help the clinician identify issues in a timely manner and may provide a method to involve the patient in their care. An additional benefit of wound photos is the prevention of potential legal issues as it demonstrates that the quality of care received is appropriate. The prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) remains a primary concern for providers. While prophylactic heparin has been routinely prescribed, other forms of prevention such as early ambulation and pneumatic compression are now being used. This project sought to identify which method of DVT prophylaxis is more effective in providing safe patient care and reducing hospital stay. Based on the literature that was reviewed, the use of dual prophylactic measures may be more beneficial than a single preventative measure. As always, more research is warranted.

Background: Code status orders are important features of patient-centered clinical decisions, patient autonomy, and end-of-life care. Despite proper documentation of “do not resuscitate” (DNR) code status, hospitalized patients may be subjected to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts that go against their wishes.
