Implementation Of Obstetric Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Ob Eras) Protocol: Prenatally Through Transition To Community, Emily Corbett Jan 2021

Implementation Of Obstetric Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Ob Eras) Protocol: Prenatally Through Transition To Community, Emily Corbett

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

This project discusses the implementation of Obstetric Enhanced Recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol for cesarean section patients scheduled or emergent. The goal of this project was to ensure the best possible outcomes from surgery for obstetric patients by decreasing surgical site infection rates in order to decrease maternal mortality rates. It provides protocols preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively for surgical procedures. Key steps take place in each phase of surgical care to impact patient outcomes. The protocol includes shorter NPO times, decreased surgical stress through multi-modal approaches for pain and nausea, early mobility, and reduces the length of stay. OB ERAS …

Parental Knowledge Of Pediatric Car Seat Safety Recommendations, Stephanie Edwards, Erica Elkin, Danley Herring, Maggie Hyer, Joni Stewart Jan 2021

Parental Knowledge Of Pediatric Car Seat Safety Recommendations, Stephanie Edwards, Erica Elkin, Danley Herring, Maggie Hyer, Joni Stewart

MSN Research Projects

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2018, 634 children were killed in traffic accidents. One-third of children killed in car accidents are not restrained properly in the vehicle. Improper car seat use in infants and toddlers results from a lack of knowledge from guardians regarding car seat safety usage. Therefore, education from providers is vital to the health and safety of all children. According to these statistics, car seat safety is a large public health concern and needs to be addressed more often. Even though there are many factors related to traffic accidents, studies show that …

Playing Music As A Nursing Intervention To Reduce Distress In Neonatal And Pediatric Acute Care Patients: A Literature Review, Seren E. Özoğlu Jan 2021

Playing Music As A Nursing Intervention To Reduce Distress In Neonatal And Pediatric Acute Care Patients: A Literature Review, Seren E. Özoğlu

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Pediatric and neonatal patients are especially vulnerable to suffering from distress. This literature review identifies research which applies passive music listening to distressed neonatal and pediatric acute care patients. Databases searched to find relevant studies include CINAHL plus with full text, MEDLINE, Alt HealthWatch, APA PsycArticles, and APA PsycInfo from EBSCOhost. Six studies were identified to meet search criteria. The studies that supported music listening with the neonatal and pediatric populations had a positive effect in reducing distress levels. Additional research is warranted to further validate these findings. Music listening with neonatal and pediatric patients is a simple, cost-effective intervention …

Enhanced Breastfeeding Support Using Video Education To Improve Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates In A Baby-Friendly Acute Care Facility, Carol Mayernik Jan 2021

Enhanced Breastfeeding Support Using Video Education To Improve Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates In A Baby-Friendly Acute Care Facility, Carol Mayernik

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) provides health benefits and is recommended by professional health organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, The World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Healthcare facilities support families to achieve EBF by educating clinicians and patients about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, providing prenatal education and hospital support to patients, and by achieving Baby-Friendly Designation through the Baby-Friendly USA, as endorsed by the World Health Organization/UNICEF. Most pregnant patients desire to exclusively breastfeed yet multiple barriers exist to achieve this goal. Evidence supports the use of video learning as an effective way to …

Feasibility Of Online Nutritional Counseling And/Or Remote Self Weighing In Pregnant Women With Obesity, Rebecca Mattson

Dissertations

Purpose

The purpose of this feasibility study is to determine the magnitude of effect using a combination of weekly weights and an online registered dietician to control excessive gestational weight gain in pregnant women with obesity using a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Specific Aims

There are three specific aims. Aim 1: Describe the study population in terms of sociodemographic influences (e.g., ethnicity, age, weight, and height) and obstetrical influences (i.e., parity and pregnancy weight). Aim 2: Measure participant satisfaction with the study interventions of weekly weighing and online nutrition counselling. Aim 3: (a) Explore the differences in gestational weight …

Virtual Pedagogical Strategies And Hesi Student Outcomes In Response To Covid-19, Elizabeth Moxley, Anitha Saravanan, Larinda Dixon, Janice Miller, Maureen Waller

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: To maintain curricular integrity in response to COVID-19, nurse educators are increasingly required to transition from traditional (face-to-face) to virtual pedagogy. Objectives: The purpose of this analysis was to compare the HESI scores based on a traditional pedagogy with the HESI scores following implementation of virtual pedagogy during Spring 2020. Methods: Student (n = 115; 81% female; mean age = 25.71 years) HESI scores were compared after each eightweek session using the Mann Whitney U test, permutation test and Wilcoxon rank test. Logistic regression was used to identify students achieving at least 850. Chi-square test was used to determine …

Timeless Escape: An Escape Room Activity Focusing On The Proper Use Of The Timeless Breast Milk System, Abigail M. Ruffing Jan 2021

Timeless Escape: An Escape Room Activity Focusing On The Proper Use Of The Timeless Breast Milk System, Abigail M. Ruffing

Master of Science in Nursing Scholarly Project

When infants fed with human milk are hospitalized, the milk is managed by a computerized system that receives and tracks human milk for each infant, its location, and their expiration dates. This system is equipped with a barcode scanner which aids in the safe preparation and distribution of human milk. Audits conducted at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center revealed that 1,071 containers expired unnecessarily during the last 6 months of 2020 costing the facility both time and money. The proposed educational module was comprised of an interactive virtual escape room activity that enhanced their knowledge of the milk management system. …

Workplace Lactation Support And Breastfeeding Practices In Employed Mothers, Robin Ray Jan 2021

Workplace Lactation Support And Breastfeeding Practices In Employed Mothers, Robin Ray

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Low rates of breastfeeding are a global public health issue. Despite national and international health agency recommendations for breastfeeding until infants are six months of age when solid foods are introduced and continued breastfeeding until 12 months of age or older, many mothers in the United States discontinue breastfeeding at an early age. Return to work after childbirth is one of the leading contributing factors to early cessation of breastfeeding in employed mothers. Understanding the association between individual and organizational factors and breastfeeding practices in employed mothers is essential for the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies to …

Background

Perinatal (antenatal and postpartum) depression impacts approximately 12% of mothers. Perinatal depression can impact everyday functioning for mothers, and the relationship with, and development of, their children. The purpose of this study was to investigate depression trajectories from the antenatal period through 54-months postpartum and associations with child body mass index at 54-months postpartum.

Methods

This study applied latent growth modeling to the Growing Up in New Zealand study, which is a longitudinal pregnancy cohort study that provides nationally representative-level data, to investigate associations between depression at three time points (antenatal, 9-months postpartum, 54-months postpartum) and child body mass …
