Abstract

Children living in Amish communities in Ohio are under-immunized and under-immunized communities are reservoirs for preventable childhood diseases. A recent measles outbreak in central Ohio involved 9 counties and 377 cases of this vaccine-preventable disease. There were 5 hospitalizations related to this measles outbreak in Knox County. Vaccine-preventable illnesses contribute to pediatric morbidity and mortality and are cost prohibitive to individuals and society.

Background: Warfarin is the most commonly prescribed oral anticoagulant for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism. Due to its narrow therapeutic index, warfarin requires close monitoring of the international normalized ratio (INR) to ensure proper anticoagulation control and safety. INRs outside of this range are strongly associated with an increased risk of major bleeding, thromboembolic events, and death. Patient self-testing (PST) using a point-of-care device allows patients to monitor INR results at home. Although education has been identified as a factor affecting treatment adherence, on-going education for diabetes typically occurs in the early stages. This pilot study consisted of a quantitative, comparative study utilizing tele-health as the primary form of educational reinforcement for latent stage, low-income diabetics. Patients who suffer minor brain injuries experience unnecessary ionizing radiation in the form of a non-contrast head CT scan despite the dearth of evidence supporting standard CT scans for all brain injuries. Exposure to ionizing radiation increases the incidence of certain types of cancer. This evidence-based practice change project assesses the attitude of clinicians towards evidence-based clinical decision support tools, specifically the Canadian CT head rule. Assessment Of Patient Barriers To And Facilitators Of Screening Colonoscopy: Utilizing Patient Perspectives To Formulate Recommendations To Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates, Heather N. Cox

A pilot study was conducted that utilized focused patient interviews to determine patient barriers to and facilitators of screening colonoscopy. The interviews were transcribed and systematically analyzed to detect recurring patterns and themes related to screening colonoscopy completion or lack thereof. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize additional sample characteristics such as gender, education level, and income level. Among those who had received a screening colonoscopy (44%, 11 of 25), provider recommendation was the most influential factor for procedure completion, followed by the combination of provider plus family member recommendation. Although depression in this population is associated with increased rates of re-hospitalization, falls, and suicides, it is frequently under diagnosed and under treated. This Capstone Report examined this problem through three interrelated manuscripts. The first manuscript explored the problem through a review of the literature.
