Rationale & Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is common among hemodialysis patients, but treatment can add to their pill burden and may be limited by nonadherence. We sought to investigate the value of directly observed, once-weekly fluoxetine dosing in MDD. Study Design: Feasibility trial of adult hemodialysis patients with untreated MDD. The diagnosis of MDD was determined using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Setting & Participants: 16 patients at 15 hemodialysis facilities in Northeast Ohio. Intervention: Patients were initially prescribed 20 mg of fluoxetine once daily for 2 weeks to assess their tolerance. The patients took this daily fluoxetine unobserved …

Introduction: Drug-related deaths in Maine increased by 23% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the last quarter of 2019. Most of these deaths were accidental overdoses involving at least one opioid, and 65% of these deaths were caused by fentanyl, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Methods: This research explored substance use in Maine during 2020. Among the sample of individuals, 46% were homeless and receiving recovery services at a buprenorphine-assisted treatment program at a federally qualified health center in Maine. Transgender/non-binary experiences and identities are often represented in academic literature through narratives of distress and are often pathologized through a medical lens. This holds implications for the field of psychotherapy, as interventions aimed to support transgender/nonbinary individuals often focus solely on risk mitigation. This article presents a therapeutic framework that rests on three pillars—Play, Pleasure, and Possibility—as the focal points for reimagining work with transgender/non-binary clients. This model aims to help this population explore gender transition with more ease through building practical skills, cultivating personal and collective pride, and centering pleasure equity.

Over the past 40 years there have been significant advances in medical care for HIV. However, many people living with HIV (PLWH) experience internalized stigma in the form of HIV-related shame. This shame has been found to negatively impact mental health, patient relationships, and adherence to healthcare. This grounded theory DNP scholarly project was aimed at developing a novel theoretical framework and practice to improve quality of life including increased viral load suppression in PLWH. Focusing on Joseph Conrad’s Nostromo, this essay historicizes the treatment of what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder, demonstrating how Conrad anticipated our current understanding and treatment of the illness. The second part of the essay addresses Nostromo’s treatment of historiography. Part three is concerned with epistemology and the relationship between neurological discoveries concerning the gap between perception and consciousness, relating those discoveries to Conrad’s use of delayed decoding.

The current study focuses on understanding how the potential consequences of losing a parent before the age of eighteen influence depression, anxiety, and academic motivation in Latino college students. The study also explored how social support could interfere with these consequences. Five participants were recruited from various universities, and they were interviewed virtually, guided by a phenomenology design. The data was analyzed using a narrative approach. The results show that social support is fundamental to mitigating the consequences of losing a parent at a young age. Nearly 20% of all women will be the victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault within the United States, yet less than one quarter of victims will report their experienced crime to law enforcement (LE). Many survivors of sexual violence experience apprehension about reporting sexual assault, due to fear of social consequences, relational consequences, and fear of the reprisal from LE officers. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to gain knowledge about Evangelical Christians’ everyday life with a family member experiencing mental distress and their perceptions of the faith community’s responses. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescent, teens, and young adults. Suicidal ideation is a predictor of suicide attempts. Guided by the integrated motivational-volitional model and social cognitive theory, Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey data were used to investigate whether traditional bullying, cyberbullying, and participation in physically violent behavior (independent variables) were associated with suicidal ideation and behavior (dependent variables) among African American high school aged youth controlling for age, gender, physical, and sexual abuse.
