Moral Distress Among Master’S Counseling Students Attending A Cacrep Accredited Counselor Training Program, Matthew Stevens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Moral distress, an understudied phenomenon among the counseling profession, has been defined as an experience of knowing the right thing to do but being institutionally prevented from doing what is believed to be right. This phenomenon often occurs in hierarchical relationships, such as those between student and teacher or supervisor and supervisee, and may lead to psychological impairment, deviation from ethical standards, and professional burnout, which threatens the ability of professional counselors to initiate and maintain healthy professional relationships. The purpose of this descriptive, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of six master’s level students attending counselor training …

Childhood Anxiety And Roles Of Parents, Educators, And Pediatric Healthcare Providers In Addressing Protective Factors, Gabriela Zamora-Ahlstrom
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractChildhood anxiety affects over 32% of youth in the United States, and when left untreated, contributes to poor school performance, social difficulties, truancy, school dropout rates, juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and family and community difficulties. Preventing childhood anxiety by implementing effective protective factors for children can eliminate many of these outcomes. Using the biopsychosocial theory and social work systems theories, this study involved exploring the beliefs and attitudes of parents, educators, and pediatric healthcare providers in an affluent suburban community of Detroit (Rochester/Rochester Hills, MI), regarding their roles in providing protective factors against childhood anxiety. A generic qualitative research design …

How Being Aware Of Military Culture Influences Social Work Practice With Female Military Personnel, John Raymond Gonzalez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Active-duty women in the military seek help through the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) on military bases from social workers with a master’s degree in social work (MSW) who are hired by the federal government or by firms that contract with social workers to serve military personnel. Most of those social workers have no military background per se, which brings into question how being aware of the military culture might influence their practice with female military personnel. Grounded in self-awareness theory, which places focus on one's awareness relative to one's culture and environment at any time, the purpose of this action …

The effectiveness of the assisted outpatient treatment law in a Southwestern state, known as Laura’s Law, has not been studied. With a theoretical foundation based on the social contract and multiple streams analysis theories, a quantitative, casual, comparative study using an independent t test was centered on determining whether the mean numbers of incarcerated individuals …
Relationship Of Mindfulness To Worldview Defense When Mortality Is Salient, Blake Ausmus
Relationship Of Mindfulness To Worldview Defense When Mortality Is Salient, Blake Ausmus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Humans value self-preservation, and therefore that which is perceived to threaten survival should cause stress. However, humans have also developed the understanding of their own mortality, meaning that they cognitively understand that death is inevitable. The conflict arising from these opposing constructs holds the potential to cause anxiety. Interestingly, this anxiety is not easily observed in most. Terror management theory posits that there are buffer systems in place that help to keep death anxiety at bay so that humans are able to continue to function in their daily lives. These buffers include becoming more stringent to one’s worldviews and less …
