  • Secondary traumatic stress (STS): type of indirect trauma wherein listening to the traumatic experiences of another causes causes a stress reaction and can lead to PTSD-like symptoms (6, 18, 13).
  • Secondary traumatic stress affects mental health professionals at high rates because they have higher rates of exposure to traumatic content (1, 2, 6, 20).
  • The current study analyzes the impact of personal history of trauma on the therapist and how the workplace environment impacts STS to identify ways to reduce the severity and frequency of STS occurring in therapists.

This paper will be an analysis of the psychological disorder of major depression. First, the classification of this disorder using the DSM-IV-TR will be reviewed. The areas of etiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment will then be considered. Following, a theory-specific approach to the disease including theoretical framework, diagnosis and treatment, and outcomes of using this approach, will be examined. Finally a personal reflection on the subject of major depression, and lessons learned from this project, will be discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to briefly outline assessment and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in afflicted individuals (i.e., care recipients [CRs]) and review relevant research concerning the effects of AD progression on caregivers (CGs) as they care for loved ones. This paper is an attempt to raise awareness of the presence of self-injury in Western societies. Causes, symptoms, related diagnoses, and treatment of self-injurious behaviors will be discussed. Most importantly, however, this paper is meant to challenge and, ultimately, decrease the stigma surrounding SD and increase empathy and compassion for the self-injuring person.

Due to constraints of this research paper, the author focuses on female self-injurers and excludes information on self-injury in mentally retarded individuals and prisoners.

Over the past decade, there has been an alarming increase in the rate of suicide among the adolescent population. It has been reported that among the 15 to 24- year-old population, the incidence of suicide has increased 200 percent since 1960. Suicide is now the third leading cause of death among adolescents and adults, ages 15 to 24- year-olds.
