Physician wellness measurement in Emergency Medicine (EM) in particular and in healthcare in general has largely focused on identifying distress states such as emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Instruments such as the Maslach Burnout Inventory and related derivative surveys have been well-validated and  have played a central role in identifying the scope of burnout across healthcare systems.

Conceptual Framing

While current measures of distress are essential, they may not fully characterize the spectrum of clinician health. This poster is a literature review examining the relationship between green space exposure and mental health outcomes. Examples of green spaces include nature, hiking trails, city parks, tree cover, and gardens. This literature review finds that green space exposure has positive effects on the symptoms of ADHD, depression, and anxiety. Nature exposure may serve as a complementary intervention to improve patient well-being.

Children with genetic syndromes and other neurodevelopmental conditions frequently present to the Emergency Department (ED) with sensory vulnerabilities that complicate evaluation and treatment in high-stimulus environments. While experienced clinicians often adapt instinctively to meet these needs, such adaptations may be inconsistently applied and may also be highly individual provider dependent. We present a case involving a child with a genetic syndrome affecting auditory and visual systems to illustrate how small environmental, relational, temporal, and cognitive adjustments can prevent escalation and enable routine care delivery without specialized resources.

Introduction: Obesity is a growing concern among transgender individuals, influenced by hormone therapy and social determinants of health. Bariatric surgery is effective, but weight regain is common and understudied in this population. Case: A transgender woman with prior sleeve gastrectomy presented with weight regain despite multiple pharmacologic trials. Her Gender-affirming hormone therapy included estrogen and androgen suppression. The relationship between stress levels and delayed wound healing needs to be further investigated, particularly in hospitalized and chronically ill patients. Research shows that psychological stress can impair immune function, reduce tissue regeneration, and prolong inflammation, all of which slow the healing process. It is important to explore how both acute and chronic stress affect different types of wounds, such as surgical incisions, pressure injuries, and diabetic ulcers. Additionally, identifying which stress-reduction interventions are most effective in improving healing outcomes is essential. Understanding these factors can help nurses implement targeted, evidence-based interventions to promote faster recovery.

Hypothesis: We hypothesized that surgeons who continue practicing after a major complication are more likely to have strong institutional and peer support, a growth mindset, and access to coping mechanisms that mitigate distress and legal pressures. Study Design:

Depression remains a significant public health challenge in the U.S., affecting millions of adults and contributing to both psychological and financial burdens. Major depressive disorder impacts approximately 14.5 million U.S. adults, with about 30% of cases classified as treatment-resistant depression. Traditional antidepressant therapies, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, often have delayed onset and limited efficacy, leaving a substantial portion of patients without adequate relief. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (2022), fatigue is defined as “a condition characterized by increased discomfort with lessened capacity for work, reduced efficiency of accomplishment, loss of power or capacity to respond to stimulation, and is usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness” (p. 2). This motivated our team to implement changes in our residency program’s inpatient service. We approached resident wellness in a comprehensive manner. The changes we implemented at our site had crucial benefits for our inpatient teams.
