Art Therapy And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Building Sibling Connections, Melissa Scott Mariner
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Families of children with autism encounter unique challenges. This thesis is a report of the case material from providing clinical art therapy to one sibling dyad with the goal of assessing and strengthening the sibling relationship.
Three one-hour individual art therapy sessions with the sibling were alternated with three dyad art therapy sessions to address the sibling’s experience and promote increased communication, interaction, and reciprocity between the siblings. The case report was generated from a semi-structured interview with the parents, a family art therapy assessment, session observations, and artwork created in session. The art processes used provided participants with an …

A Proposal For An Art Therapy Intervention To Support A Child Whose Parent Has Been Diagnosed With Cancer, Jenna Nicole Kelley

Parental cancer can put strain on children’s ability to cope with stress and can impact their future development. Children may experience high levels of stress and depression when faced with life changes such as parental cancer. There is limited research on how children cope with parental cancer. Art therapy can help promote communication and expression of feelings and serve as an educational approach to help children cope with parental cancer. The objective of this thesis was to design an art therapy intervention for a child who is experiencing parental cancer. This art therapy intervention has been designed to alleviate the …

An Art-Based Psychoeducational Group For Pregnant Teenagers, Lauren Burinsky
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
This thesis began as an art-based psychoeducational group for pregnant teenagers, and two out of ten sessions were completed. However, due to several limitations, the study had to be turned into a proposal for the group. The goal of the proposed group is to increase pregnant teenagers’ preparedness (as measured by both knowledge base and competence) for the rest of their pregnancy and for motherhood. Over the course of five weeks, six girls would participate in ten sessions. This group will be hosted at Healthy Families in Hampton, Virginia, and the participants will be members there. The first part of …

An Art Therapy Intervention To Help Military Children Cope With Parental Deployment, Eleanor Kai Lampell
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Research regarding military children and their ability to cope with parental deployment is extensive. However, research dealing with art therapy and military children is limited. Five group art therapy sessions were conducted with two military children with a parent currently in stage two of parental deployment. It was hypothesized that through participating in group art therapy, military children with a parent who is currently deployed would have a reduction of problematic behaviors in a …

An Investigation Into The Coming-Out Experience For Families Of Homosexuals: Understanding Through Personal Artmaking And Dialogue, Micah Bennett
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
A review of the literature indicated the lack of art therapy research with homosexuals and their families. The need for research into the implications for the use of art processes and materials to assist in the coming-out process of families of self-disclosed homosexuals was established. A qualitative hermeneutic method of research was initially proposed to study this need. Volunteer participants who were parents or adult relatives of self-disclosed homosexuals would participate in an audio-videotaped workshop to include three art-making exercises intended to evoke expressions of the participants’ experiences of the coming-out process. Data would have consisted of the researcher’s written …
