Program Evaluation Of The Behavioral Interventions Monitoring Assessment System-2 For High School Students In Rural Nebraska, Laura Burnett, Lakin Braman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Behavioral and mental health issues among adolescents in rural areas often go unrecognized due to limited access to screening and intervention. This study evaluated the efficacy of the BIMAS- 2 tool in identifying at-risk high school students in a rural Nebraska high school. Methods: A retrospective cohort program evaluation was conducted over two years with 263 students in grades 9-12. The BIMAS-2 assessment was administered electronically each semester, followed by in-person mental health interviews. Descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square tests assessed the tool’s sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value. Results: The BIMAS-2 demonstrated high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (96.15%), with a …

The Association Between Economic Outcomes And Abortion: A Scoping Review, Larisa Nicole Stephenson
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Background: Abortion access is not just an issue of autonomy, but an economic issue as well. Evidence of the intersectionality of abortion health care and economics has endured due to the financial cascading effects a denial of an abortion, or the inability to access an abortion, has on one’s personal, professional, and economic upward mobility. A change in recent policies impacting access to abortion warrants an updated synthesis examining the relationships between economic outcomes and abortion access for people of reproductive age in the United States (U.S.).
Aim: This scoping review summarizes evidence pertaining to the association …

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Reduction Program For Hispanics In The Us Midwest: A Culturally Adapted Intervention, Armando De Alba
Cardiovascular Disease Risk Reduction Program For Hispanics In The Us Midwest: A Culturally Adapted Intervention, Armando De Alba
Theses & Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents the second leading cause of death in Nebraska (NE), accounting for approximately one in every five deaths. In the state, there are marked ethnic and rural-urban disparities in the prevalence of chronic diseases and resultant deaths. For instance, while the rates in NE of coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction between 2001 and 2010 decreased among non-Hispanic Whites, the rates for Hispanics almost tripled. There is little evidence of CVD risk factor reduction strategies being implemented in Midwestern areas and Hispanic populations.
One promising approach for reducing CVD risk involves health education and lifestyle modification programs …

Program Evaluation: Utilizing Health Department’S Community Health Needs Assessment Data To Improve Emergency Preparedness Plans, Kathleen Gottschalk
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Public health officials conducting emergency response plans must know how to easily identify the vulnerable populations in their community or jurisdiction. It is beneficial for access and functional needs appendices to include information and resources directed at the identified vulnerable groups before an emergency event to improve health outcomes. Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) can provide population-level statistics and information needed to easily identify vulnerable or at-risk groups. This report aims to evaluate the use of the CHNA data to guide the development of inclusive emergency response plans that account for vulnerable populations in local health department jurisdictions. The 2021 …

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
This research study was completed at Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Health, Education, and Law Project through the partnership it has formed working with Nebraska Medicine and Iowa Legal Aid. Traditionally, health and disease have always been viewed exclusively as "healthcare" issues. But with healthcare consistently growing towards holistic approaches to help patients, we now know there are deeper, structural conditions of society that can act as strong driving forces of a person's poor daily living conditions that can negatively impact health. The importance of a Medical-Legal Partnership is that it considers a patient's social determinants of health (SDHs). The goal …
