Teaching As Accommodation: The Benefits Of Teaching All Children Through A Trauma-Informed Lens, Megan Retzloff
Teaching As Accommodation: The Benefits Of Teaching All Children Through A Trauma-Informed Lens, Megan Retzloff
Art of Teaching Thesis - Written
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are an epidemic in our society. In 2021 alone, an estimated 600,000 children in the United States experienced abuse or neglect, with 90.6% of all reported cases documenting one or both parents as the perpetrator (HHS, 2023). As educators, we play an important role in preventing and mitigating the effects of ACEs in our students. When a child’s home life is unstable, schools and teachers are the next line of defense. Throughout the United States, schools are the constant; they are a universal provider even in areas that otherwise have limited access to support. Schools are …
An Assessment Of The Sexual And Mental Health Needs Of Transition Age Foster Youth In New York City, Elizabeth Claessens
An Assessment Of The Sexual And Mental Health Needs Of Transition Age Foster Youth In New York City, Elizabeth Claessens
Health Advocacy Theses
Young adults age 18 to 21 who are transitioning out or “aging out” of foster care are an extremely vulnerable group who lack typical family support and preparation for independent adulthood. All transition age foster youth have been exposed to trauma and likely have had multiple adverse childhood experiences. This population is understood to have significant mental and sexual health risks. Foster care service agencies in New York City provide mental and sexual (reproductive) health care to foster youth as mandated by the state of New York. This needs assessment seeks to better understand whether those services meet the mental …
Bharatanatyam, An Effective Psychotherapeutic Intervention In Dance/Movement Therapy, Maanasa Marghashayam Bharath
Bharatanatyam, An Effective Psychotherapeutic Intervention In Dance/Movement Therapy, Maanasa Marghashayam Bharath
Dance/Movement Therapy Theses
Dance/movement therapy is a psychotherapeutic modality that acknowledges the human body as a window to the human mind and spirit. Through creative and dynamic interventions, it fosters a healthy unification of the mind and body to enhance an individual's holistic health. This research focuses on the traditional dance form of India, Bharatanatyam, and its influence on the body and mind of the practitioner. Journeying through the history of the dance form to its relevance in the field of dance/movement therapy, the thesis explores how Bharatanatyam can be useful as an alternate method, in a therapeutic session to facilitate navigation through …
Relationship Between Outcomes Of Psychiatric Genetic Counseling And Time Since Onset And Diagnosis Of Psychiatric Illness, Sarah Saxton
Relationship Between Outcomes Of Psychiatric Genetic Counseling And Time Since Onset And Diagnosis Of Psychiatric Illness, Sarah Saxton
Human Genetics Theses
Research shows that psychiatric genetic counseling (pGC) improves outcomes for patients. We conducted a retrospective chart review study to examine the relationship between outcomes of pGC and time since onset and/or diagnosis of psychiatric illness at a specialist pGC clinic. Specifically, we examined change in empowerment scores (as measured by the Genetic Counseling Outcome Scale (GCOS) prior to (T1) and approximately one month after the pGC appointment (T2)), in relationship to: a) time since symptom onset (TSO) and b) time since psychiatric diagnosis (TSD). Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between TSO and/or TSD and GCOS change, and …
Dance/Movement Therapy In Response To Continuous Race-Based Trauma, Aliesha Bryan
Dance/Movement Therapy In Response To Continuous Race-Based Trauma, Aliesha Bryan
Dance/Movement Therapy Theses
Trauma is concomitant with a lack of safety; as such, where there is a threat to safety, there is likely to be trauma. Afrodescendants living in the United States, through an ongoing lack of human regard, are often powerless to ensure their safety, and are regularly subjected to continuous, race-based trauma. Racism is deeply embedded in the nation’s institutions as well as in every relationship, and this deeply pervasive and penetrating ideology influences strongly how individuals of any race interact with others. Race-based aggression, from micro- to macro-, has a profound and continuously traumatizing effect on Afrodescendants, with similarly profound …
Dance/Movement Therapy And A Search For Wholeness Under Capitalism, Autumn Wright
Dance/Movement Therapy And A Search For Wholeness Under Capitalism, Autumn Wright
Dance/Movement Therapy Theses
Wellness, as it is currently defined in late capitalism, is a luxury good for the ruling class. Capitalism and the commodification of wellness go largely unaddressed in current dance/movement therapy research. In the United States, dance/movement therapists operate within the for-profit healthcare system. The United States is the only industrialized democracy in the world without a national health insurance program. Despite the access to state licensure for the past 20 years, dance/movement therapists still have no guarantee that health insurance companies will pay for their services. Concurrently, there has been a surgency of self-proclaimed wellness coaches. These …
