DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Suicide is a leading cause of death among college age students, prompting the need for evidence-based screening tools like the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) to enable early detection and timely intervention. Inconsistencies in suicide screening may pose a risk of missed intervention opportunities. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project specifically aimed to improve the quality and consistency of suicide screening in a university student health clinic by implementing the C-SSRS tool into the clinic workflow during mental health appointments. Methods: Employing a quality improvement framework, this scholarly project followed the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Model for Improvement …
Extending Immunity For Drug Overdoses, Dixie R. Tabet, Maggie G. Spadaro, Kaylie E. Moss
Extending Immunity For Drug Overdoses, Dixie R. Tabet, Maggie G. Spadaro, Kaylie E. Moss
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
The Tennessee Code 63-1-156 provides immunity to those who suffer from a drug overdose that seek medical assistance, only for the first overdose. After the first overdose, individuals who seek medical assistance do not receive immunity and are subject to criminal charges. Over the past 5 years, drug overdose deaths have increased significantly and in 2021 3,814 Tennesseans died from a drug overdose. In addition, individuals incarcerated for drug-related offenses make up about 20% of the state’s prison population. The state of Tennessee has had a significant increase in drug abuse rates, leading to a rise in overdose deaths and …
The Various Nervous System Drugs Commonly Used For Treatment And The Disparities In Availability Of These Drugs In Minority Groups, Iman Haurami
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
The nervous system is a complex network in our body that is responsible for actions, reflexes, and even sensations. With the brain being part of the CNS, many common nervous system disorders are due to a defect in the central nervous system and the functions of this organ. These disorders include mental health problems, degenerative diseases, seizures, infections, and other possible genetic diseases. Many of these diseases are common in society and constantly researched. Even though these diseases are common, treatment accessibility and effects on people of minority groups are overlooked compared to the focus on majority groups. For drug …

Public Stigma And Self-Stigma Of Depression In College Students, Peyton Lee
Public Stigma And Self-Stigma Of Depression In College Students, Peyton Lee
DNP Scholarly Projects
A large body of literature portrays the long-term, increased presence of mental illness stigma in college students, a vulnerable population at high risk of victimization. However, literature lacks sufficient research differentiating between the separate forms of mental illness stigma as well as consistent research examining stigma specific to the mental illness of depression in college students. A cross-sectional, web-based survey design was utilized to collect quantitative data from 432 students at a private, four-year university in the southeastern United States. The primary investigator both described the presence of and relationship between levels of perceived public stigma, personal public stigma, and …
Religious Coping And Christ-Centered Recovery For Women With Substance Use Disorders, Mary Beth Bever
Religious Coping And Christ-Centered Recovery For Women With Substance Use Disorders, Mary Beth Bever
DNP Scholarly Projects
Women have unique risk factors for the development of substance use disorder (SUD), barriers to SUD treatment, and risk factors for SUD relapse that require holistic care models and provide trauma-informed care approaches that address effective coping strategies. The use of religion and spirituality has been commonplace in many SUD programs to inspire the use of positive religious coping; however, negative religious coping may also be drawn on which poses a potential harm for women with SUD. The aim of this project was to assess for a correlation in positive and negative religious coping scores and program completion rates in …

Responding To Opioid Use Disorder: Identifying The Therapeutic Commitment Of Maine Nurse Practitioners, Jordan S. Porter
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Buprenorphine, an underutilized pharmacotherapy, can play a key role in closing the substantial opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment gap in the United States. Although 2016 US legislation authorized trained nurse practitioners (NPs) to obtain the Drug Enforcement Agency waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for OUD, many NPs do not have the waiver, and a large proportion of waivered NPs do not prescribe to capacity. Purpose: To identify the therapeutic commitment of Maine NPs to OUD as well as understand why Maine NPs do not adopt and utilize buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD. Review of Evidence: Commitment …
Self-Care And Burnout Among Nurses In A Hospital Setting, Hannah Stirnaman
Self-Care And Burnout Among Nurses In A Hospital Setting, Hannah Stirnaman
DNP Scholarly Projects
Rates of burnout among healthcare professionals are well documented. The burnout of professional nurses is associated with a number of poor outcomes with costly consequences to both the healthcare system and public health. The American Nurses Association (ANA) has pushed for an initiative entitled Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation that encourages nurses to prioritize their health first and lists compelling statistics of nurse stress, mental health concerns, and workplace injuries. Burnout, a combination of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and decreased productivity, is one consequence of workplace stress and the demands placed on nurses; however, there is a lack of research on individualized …

DNP Scholarly Projects
The prevalence of unintended pregnancy among women receiving medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) exceeds 80%. While much of the existing literature has focused on the consequences of substance use in pregnancy, few have focused on the prevention of unintended pregnancy. This study explored barriers and facilitating factors impacting contraception use among women, ages 18-45, receiving MAT for OUD in Middle Tennessee. A cross-sectional survey design was used to describe the women’s sociodemographic and health characteristics; report their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; and to assess if these variables are associated with current use of contraception. Among survey …
Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Pain Interference And Anxiety In An Integrative Chronic Pain Clinic, Kerrin Doran Kunze
Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Pain Interference And Anxiety In An Integrative Chronic Pain Clinic, Kerrin Doran Kunze
DNP Scholarly Projects
One in four children in the United States will experience abuse or neglect before the age of 18-years-old. Adverse childhood experiences increase the risk for chronic pain disorders and maladaptive coping strategies that can intensify patients’ experience of pain and disrupt or prolong treatment. Current research encourages a biopsychosocial approach to understanding and treating chronic pain, one that acknowledges the influence of childhood trauma and works to restore health by treating pain of the body, mind, and spirit. This retrospective study examined self-reported measures in a convenience sample of 162 individuals seeking treatment for chronic pain at an integrative care …
The Effect Of Mindfulness Meditation On Perceived Stress And Total Health Care Cost, Rachel Hale
The Effect Of Mindfulness Meditation On Perceived Stress And Total Health Care Cost, Rachel Hale
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Chronic stress can lead to hypertension, tachycardia, and increased inflammatory markers, which put individuals at risk for chronic diseases. Mindful meditation not only decreases perceived stress but also has the potential to decrease the risk of chronic diseases and health care cost. Purpose: The purpose of this mindfulness meditation project is to reaffirm that mindfulness meditation decreases perceived stress scores and to determine whether mindfulness meditation decreases health care cost. Theoretical Model: The relation of mindfulness meditation, lowered stress levels, and chronic diseases can be explained by the social cognitive theory (SCT). Applying SCT, meditation’s goal is to alter …
Maternal Monitoring Of Adolescent Type 1 Diabetes Management And Its Influence On Adolescent Quality Of Life And Adolescent Depressive Symptoms, Anna Gorzny
DNP Scholarly Projects
While current literature identifies variables such as demographics, parental monitoring, and family functioning and their association with glycemic control in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus, there has yet to be sufficient evidence identifying and supporting the relationships between the level of maternal monitoring and adolescent psychological wellbeing. The purpose of this scholarly project was to assess whether higher levels of maternal monitoring of diabetes management practices was associated with fewer adolescent depressive symptoms and higher adolescent quality of life. The study sample consisted of 117 adolescents between the ages of 10 and 16 with type 1 diabetes and their …

Exploring Affects Of Critical Care Work Environments On Professional Quality Of Life, Marissa Monroe
DNP Scholarly Projects
Burnout and compassion fatigue among critical care nurses can affect individual patients, healthcare systems, and nurses’ health and wellbeing. Both burnout and compassion fatigue have been well described in the literature as key elements that contribute to a nurse’s overall professional quality of life, and can be directly influenced by the health of the nurses’ work environment. The AACN defined six standards of a healthy work environment, which include skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership. The purpose of this project is to explore which of the AACN Healthy Work Environment standards have the …
