Exploring The Occupation Of Rest, Emilee Eckhart, Susan Macdermott, Becki Cohill, Karen Park
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Rest is an occupation that encompasses many aspects of the human experience. It is an occupation that looks different for everyone. The field of occupational therapy has always emphasized the importance and relevance of the occupation of rest. After a review of literature on the topic, there was little information about how rest and restful occupations are addressed in occupational therapy practice. This capstone project explored the occupation of rest and how it was understood and addressed in occupational therapy practice. This was a qualitative research design, where a survey was produced for occupational therapy practitioners (OTP). The survey questions …

The Relationship Between Participation In Recreational Therapy Physical Activity And Symptoms Of Mental Health Issues In Veterans, Krista F. Mcdonagh
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Background/Objective: The growing prevalence of mental health issues in veterans has triggered a wide-spread effort to identify and provide complementary intervention strategies to increase help-seeking behavior in this population. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) have become two of the most common mental health issues as a result of the demanding environment of military life. This study looks specifically at therapeutic recreation-based physical activity opportunities as a complementary treatment option for veterans at an increased risk for mental health issues.
Method: A correlational survey research design was used to examine relationships between factors of participation in different …

Injury-Related Fear In Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability, Ashley Marie Brawford Suttmiller
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
About 40% of individuals who suffer a lateral ankle sprain develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). The mechanisms for developing CAI is believed to be multi-factorial, however, most literature has focused on the physical manifestations of the condition, leaving our understanding of psychological manifestations of the condition fairly unclear. Injury-related fear has been identified as a psychological factor that may be relevant to the condition, but our understanding is limited. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to better understand injury-related fear in patients with CAI through three studies.
The first study systematically reviewed the literature to understand differences in injury-related …

An Occupation-Based Program To Promote Mental Health Of At-Risk Youth In An After-Care Setting, Alexa Smith
Student Capstone Papers
The disproportionate tendency for young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds to shift from schools to the juvenile justice system is referred to as the “school to prison pipeline”. Treating and preventing mental health difficulties is within the scope of occupational therapy, and while the school system assists in mental health treatment, there is a lack of mental health supporting services in after-care settings. The purpose of the program development project is to increase the supportive mental health services provided to at-risk youth in the after-care setting. The project ran mental health group sessions using Cole’s Seven Step Model with participant groups …

Exploring The Therapeutic Relationship As A Central Focus Through Expressive Arts Therapy In Oncology, Akshata Parekh
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The treatment for cancer can be physically, mentally, emotionally and socially challenging. These treatments have side effects like physical body pain, hair loss, changes in weight, energy, nausea and more. These physical changes impact the social, mental and emotional well-being of the patient and makes this journey of the life-threating prognosis of cancer very tough to confront. Expressive arts therapy provides a safe space for the patients to address their mental health concerns as a result of this treatment. The Capstone Thesis Project explored expressive arts therapy interventions with 95 patients through single or multiple sessions while going through their …
Making Room: Addressing The Counter-Therapeutic Nature Of Psychiatric Hospitalization Through Containment- Based Group Expressive Therapy, Max Sandor Copans
Making Room: Addressing The Counter-Therapeutic Nature Of Psychiatric Hospitalization Through Containment- Based Group Expressive Therapy, Max Sandor Copans
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The process of hospitalization and the environment of a typical psychiatric hospital is often counter-therapeutic. To challenge this problem, clinicians may introduce the concept of psychological containment. To elaborate, being hospitalized anywhere can be disorienting, frightening and even traumatic. This problem is only further exacerbated in psychiatric hospitals where patients may be disorganized, manic, or struggling with psychosis. Furthermore, psychological containment is essentially the ability for psychiatric patients to prevent their intense emotions from effecting others negatively, and to act with resiliency when other patients are unable to contain their own disruptive behaviors. This paper utilizes both an initial literature …

The Therapeutic Benefits Of Attunement Through Lindy Hop, Sarah Trowbridge
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Dance/movement therapy (DMT) was developed as a tool to aide in therapeutic healing. A foundational aspect of DMT is attunement, the emotional/kinesthetic connection between two people that allows for meaningful and healing bonds to emerge. Lindy Hop is a partnered dance that fosters an environment of attunement, as it is accessed both subconsciously and consciously. This research explores Lindy Hop as a possible method of therapeutic treatment. The literature indicates the physiological need for attunement and how safety plays a key role in strengthening senses of self-identity, nervous system development, and worldview. Four experienced Lindy Hoppers were recruited to engage …

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported by the year 2050, about 26% of the population would be 60 years of age or older (CDC, 2020). As Baby Boomers (individuals born between 1946-1964) enter the Third Age, defined by lifestyle choice, consumption, and preservation of youthfulness, more and more individuals are given the opportunity to age in place and participate in new/refined lifestyles (Hostetler, 2011). Although, research has proven older adults, who are now in their later years in life, are prone to experience social isolation, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and social stressors (Valtorta et al., 2018). As the population diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) raises from 5.3 to 12.7 million over the next three decades, this calls for a demand for treatments to address this population (Alzheimer’s Association, 2021; Atchinson & Dirette, 2017). While traditional practice often focuses on symptom management, the inclusion of functional activities alone does not fully address the negative side effects of ADRD (Kok et al., 2013; Lepore et al., 2017; Mayo Clinic, 2019). Both occupational therapy (OT) and reminiscence therapy have been shown to be effective methods to treat the ADRD population separately, but there is limited evidence …
