Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening And Testing In A Primary Care Clinic, Leslie Michelle Dubois
Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening And Testing In A Primary Care Clinic, Leslie Michelle Dubois
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide (World Health Organization, 2019a). In the United States, CRC was the fourth most common cancer in 2016 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019a). The American Cancer Society (2020a) estimated that there will be 147,950 estimated new cases and 53,200 estimated deaths of CRC in the U.S. in 2020. The purpose of the project was to improve CRC screening completion rates and follow up referrals from 27.5% to 35% for adult patients, 50-75 years of age, within a family medicine clinic …

In 2012, the Food and Drug Administration approved a combination medication named Truvada (tenofovir/emtricitabine) as a prophylactic treatment to prevent HIV transmission. Truvada is also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP). PREP is a one-pill-a-day regimen proven to be 99% effective against HIV-1 transmission from sex and intravenous drug injection when taken daily. The uptake of PREP remains low because primary care providers fail to identify patients who meet the requirements to start PREP and fail to prescribe PREP for patients at risk. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase the uptake of PREP in patients at risk …
Genetic Screening For Breast Cancer In The Primary Care Setting, Michael Nick Gomez
Genetic Screening For Breast Cancer In The Primary Care Setting, Michael Nick Gomez
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of this project was to increase adherence to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for breast cancer screening and genetic testing.Screening for breast cancer risk factors including genetic testing helps reduce the incidence of breast cancer. A protocol was developed based on national clinical guidelines to increase screening and genetic testing for breast cancer. Provider responsibilities included screening all patients 18 years of age and older for risks factors of breast cancer, referring patients with a significant risk based on the screening for genetic testing and providing referrals for genetic counseling …
Quality Improvement Initiative To Increase Comprehensive Eye Exams In Patients With Diabetes, Julia Khoury
Quality Improvement Initiative To Increase Comprehensive Eye Exams In Patients With Diabetes, Julia Khoury
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication associated with poorly controlled diabetes. Yet, only 60% of the diabetic population receives an annual eye examination by an eye specialist. Retinal imaging increases surveillance of retinopathy, however, it does not take the place of a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The aim of this quality improvement project was to increase comprehensive eye examinations in patients with diabetes aged 18 to 75 years in a family practice that recently purchased a retinal imager. This quality improvement project occurred over a 10-week period. Project objectives included increasing comprehensive dilated eye …

Improving Early Child Developmental Screenings In A Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Marlischa Jackson
Doctor of Nursing Practice
A dramatic growth of physical, motor, cognitive, communication, emotional, and social development will occur during the 3 years of life. Of children ages 3-17 years of age, 13% have some type of developmental or behavioral condition that goes undiagnosed before the age of 10. Children with multiple health and social risk factors, or those with chronic health disorders, are at greater risk to develop early child delays or disabilities. In the U. S., developmental screenings are only completed 21% of the time during well-child visits. Therefore, the purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase the adherence of health …
Implementing Evidence-Based Opioid Prescription Practices In A Primary Care Setting, Cyril Gaiennie
Implementing Evidence-Based Opioid Prescription Practices In A Primary Care Setting, Cyril Gaiennie
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The use and misuse of opioid pain medication has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. More than 16,000 people die each year due to the misuse or abuse of prescription opioid medications, which is more than from heroin, cocaine, and benzodiazepines combined. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project is to establish processes enabling a primary care clinic to implement and adhere to the 2016 Centers for Disease Control’s guidelines for opioid prescription practices in the primary care setting. A retrospective chart review conducted prior to implementation of the guidelines demonstrated that four of six of the CDC’s recommendations …

The purpose of this project was to improve the rate of successful human papilloma virus (HPV) screening in a small Texas based Women's Health clinic through a co-testing method. The intended goal was to increase the rate of HPV screening, from a 73% baseline, to 95% over a 10-week period for women between the ages of 30-65 years old. Approximately 79 million American women are currently infected with HPV, and 14 million people contract it every year. Seventy percent of cervical cancers today are caused by HPV, leading to approximately 12,820 new diagnoses of invasive cervical cancer predicted for 2017, …
