Widely recognized as the most deathful gynecologic malignancy affecting women worldwide, ovarian cancer has reported a significant decline in terms of prevalence and incidence in the last decades. This fact has been especially explained by to the use of menopausal hormonal therapy and of oral contraceptives in association with genetic, oncologic and gynecologic counseling. The aim of the current review is to discuss about actual ovarian cancer prevention and screening tools. For this reason, we reviewed several data related to ovarian cancer, such as: incidence and risk factors, histopathological types (epithelial with high- and low-grade serous carcinomas, clear cell carcinoma, …

Background. Colorectal cancer is a real public health issue, with high morbidity and severe impact on quality of life. Although mortality from this type of cancer is decreasing due to modern diagnostic and treatment methods, the understanding of its genetic and molecular mechanisms is important to develop a broader range of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Genetic therapy is an important strategy in cancer treatment, and the matrix Gla protein (MGP) gene expression has been described in numerous studies as increased in tumour pathology. In this article, we have summarized the currently available evidence on the connection between MGP and colorectal …

The Diagnostic Algorithm In Pre-Invasive Cervical Lesions, Mihai-George Loghin, Oana Denisa Balalau, Nicolae Bacalbasa, Adriana Vasilache, Octavian Gabriel Olaru, Andrei Vasilache, Anca Daniela Stanescu Oct 2021

The Diagnostic Algorithm In Pre-Invasive Cervical Lesions, Mihai-George Loghin, Oana Denisa Balalau, Nicolae Bacalbasa, Adriana Vasilache, Octavian Gabriel Olaru, Andrei Vasilache, Anca Daniela Stanescu

The screening for pre-invasive cervical lesions has significantly decreased the incidence of cervical neoplasm. It is recommended to be performed starting with the age of 21 with a frequency of 3-5 years and it consists of pap smear testing and HPV genotyping, and, if required, it can be continued with colposcopy or biopsy followed by pathological assessment. The importance of the early diagnosis of pre-invasive cervical lesions has led to several studies on this topic. The paper analyzed the modern literature published on the PubMed and Scopus databases. Reference studies have found that most intraepithelial lesions are caused by the …

Unexpected Hope For A Multiple Myeloma Patient, Minodora Cezarina Onisâi, Iuliana Iordan, Mihaela Gaman, Horia Bumbea, Ana-Maria Vlădăreanu Sep 2020

Unexpected Hope For A Multiple Myeloma Patient, Minodora Cezarina Onisâi, Iuliana Iordan, Mihaela Gaman, Horia Bumbea, Ana-Maria Vlădăreanu

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasm, characterized by periods of remission and relapses. The emergence of novel therapies, with multiple mechanisms of action and fewer adverse reactions, brings more and better options and also a higher survival rate. However, MM is still an incurable disease, and patients eventually become refractory to an extensive range of therapies. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with MM standard risk, who was at first refractory to multiple treatment regimens, and then had an unexpected and stable complete response to a newer drug of the same class.

Indocyanine Green Utility In Sentinel Node Detection For Cervical Cancer Patients, Nicolae Bacalbașa, Irina Balescu, Cristian Balalau, Mihaela Vilcu, Iulian Brezean

With wide implementation of screening tests for the Human Papilloma Virus, the number of diagnosed cases of premalignant or early stages of cervical cancer has increased considerably. As a consequence, surgeons’ attention has focused on determining how best to limit the surgical procedure so the benefits of the procedure will not be surpassed by postoperative morbidity. In this respect, extended lymph node dissection, routinely associated so far with cervical cancer patients, has in the last decades been replaced with sentinel node detection and biopsy. Initially performed through radiocolloid injection, this method has undergone permanent changes in order to maximize its …
