Ebp Project In A Primary, Foster Care Medical Home: Implementation Of The Ages & Stages: Social Emotional Screener, Sara Moore May 2026

Ebp Project In A Primary, Foster Care Medical Home: Implementation Of The Ages & Stages: Social Emotional Screener, Sara Moore

2026

Background: Children in the foster care system have increased diagnoses, mental health concerns, and developmental delays.
Purpose: The pilot used the ASQ-SE to determine if the protocol was feasible and if the screener identified social-emotional difficulties in a primary care clinic that serves children in foster care.
Method: A pilot was created, and the ASQ-SE was administered to 33 patients during well-child visits (ages 2 months-70 months) over six weeks.
Results: Implementing a social-emotional screener was feasible in the foster care primary care clinic. The infants and toddlers screened (N=33) were grouped by referral status: 57.6 % (19) …

Sleep In Children In Foster Care: A Scoping Review, Juan Castellanos, Anna Wani, Jill Mcleigh

Health Status, Outcomes, and Literacy and Healthcare Utilization

Although the focus on sleep disturbances in children who have experienced adversity has increased, little is known about sleep among children in foster care (CFC). This study aimed to review what research tells us about the relationship between foster care experience and sleep disturbances and to identify knowledge gaps.

Placement, Duration And Re-Entry Outcomes For Children In Foster Care With Disabilities, Jill Mcleigh, Alan Huang, Rong Huang, Gunjan Singh Nov 2025

Placement, Duration And Re-Entry Outcomes For Children In Foster Care With Disabilities, Jill Mcleigh, Alan Huang, Rong Huang, Gunjan Singh

Health Status, Outcomes, and Literacy and Healthcare Utilization

National, longitudinal studies exploring characteristics and outcomes of children in foster care (CFC) with disabilities are lacking. This study explores the prevalence, characteristics and relative risk of experiencing placement instability, staying in care for longer than 2 years, and returning to care within 3 years for CFC with a disability and by disability type.

Perspective: Restoring Rest-The Critical Role Of Sleep In Foster Care Well-Being, Jill Mcleigh, Anna Wani, Likhita Shaik

Health Status, Outcomes, and Literacy and Healthcare Utilization

In 2023, approximately 400,000 children were in foster care in the United States, a population disproportionately affected by trauma, instability, and systemic inequities.1 These children face chronic disruptions in sleep—an essential physiological process that underpins physical development, learning, emotional regulation, and overall health.²⁻⁴ Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, are prevalent in this group and contribute to significant sleep disturbances through pathways of hyperarousal, stress dysregulation, and recurrent nightmares. 3,4 Understanding the interplay between foster care, social determinants of health (SDOH), and sleep health disparities highlights opportunities for targeted interventions to improve outcomes.

Prenatal Substance Exposure And Positive Developmental Delay Screening Among Patients In Foster Care, Lauren Malthaner, Jill Mcleigh, Gregory Knell, Katelyn Jetelina, Folefac Atem, Sarah Messiah Jun 2025

Prenatal Substance Exposure And Positive Developmental Delay Screening Among Patients In Foster Care, Lauren Malthaner, Jill Mcleigh, Gregory Knell, Katelyn Jetelina, Folefac Atem, Sarah Messiah

Behavioral Health/Developmental Delay

Prenatal substance exposure (PSE) is a known risk factor for negative birth outcomes and long-term health outcomes like neurodevelopmental problems. Children in foster care have increased exposure to PSE and higher proportions of developmental delay compared with the general population. It is unclear whether differences still exist among developmental delay screening among children in foster care with and without PSE.
