Acute Mesenteric Ischemia In Patients With Covid-19, Tristan Fun, Natalie Hurlock, Danielle Ford
Acute Mesenteric Ischemia In Patients With Covid-19, Tristan Fun, Natalie Hurlock, Danielle Ford
North Texas Research Forum 2024
Introduction: Patient with COVID-19 are more likely to have thrombotic events, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). There have been many case reports of patient with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) in the setting of COVID-19. Incidences of AMI occur in about 0.1% of acute hospital admissions. Short term mortality from AMI range from 26-86%. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are essential, yet diagnosis is difficult and AMI can often go unrecognized as a cause of death. This study attempted to establish the risk of patients with COVID-19 having acute mesenteric ischemia and compare …

The Effects Of Covid-19 On Cognition In The Pediatric Population, Mia Ramirez, Hope Mccarroll, Lisa Griggs-Stapleton
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Coronavirus disease or COVID-19, is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. COVID-19 can affect adults and children by causing long-term symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, long-term breathing problems, and even heart complications. Children represent about 19% of all reported COVID-19 cases since the pandemic first began. Children also can have trouble concentrating, which can impact their ability to attend school and do their daily activities that require concentration, such as dressing, showering, and social participation. Cognitive deficits due to COVID-19 can impact the pediatric population as they may have decreased occupational performance in desired occupations, such …

Covid-19 Prevalence And Trends Among Pregnant And Postpartum Individuals In Maine By Rurality And Pregnancy Conditions, Charlie Grantham, Christina Ackerman-Banks, Heather Lipkind, Kristin Palmsten, Katherine Ahrens
Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2023
Our study is the first to estimate prevalence of COVID-19 among pregnant and postpartum individuals for Maine, using data that captures both commercial and public insurance and examines differences by rurality, a known modifier of COVID-19 infections in the U.S. individuals.

Covid-19 And Depression And Anxiety Screening In Primary Care, Elizabeth Bernier, Abrey Feliccia, Leah Wood, Kate Herlihy, Kristen A. Woodberry
Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2023
Introduction:
• The COVID-19 pandemic had a severe effect on mental health, heightening the prevalence and severity of anxiety and depression amongst the general population in rural and non-rural areas, particularly youth.
• Most reports draw from available data from mental health referrals, hospitalizations, suicides, and other incident data
• There is limited longitudinal information from general population samples using standardized mental health assessments.

Over the past two years, COVID-19 has greatly altered undergraduate medical education (UME) as well as daily life. Medical schools across the world were disrupted and had to immediately adapt the educational experience to the online environment in order to continue the delivery of quality UME. However, COVID-19 was not the only recent pandemic. This posed the question, were similar disruptions and adaptations also seen in recent past pandemics such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) that could have prepared UME for COVID-19? This scoping review investigated the educational and personal impact of recent …

Covid-19 Masking An Atypical Presentation Of Hairy Cell Leukemia, Kahmalia-Kalee Sada
North Texas Research Forum 2023
Hairy cell leukemia is a rare lymphoid neoplasm of small mature B cell lymphoid cells. Hairy cell leukemia only accounts for about 1 to 2 percent of adult leukemia cases. Early diagnosis of Hairy cell Leukemia is important, it is proven that without treatment the median survival of this cancer is four years. After numerous studies the age-adjusted risk of death with proper diagnosis and treatment has decreased by 85%. The greatest outcomes are seen in individuals who are younger with earlier diagnosis. Hairy Cell Leukemia is a rare leukemia seen with the classic triad of splenomegaly, pancytopenia, and “hairy” …

An Interesting Occurrence Of Bell’S Palsy With Atypical Presentation After Contracting Covid-19 Infection, Yen-Chung Wang, Yen-Hsiang Wang, Christian Sanchez
North Texas Research Forum 2023
Introduction: COVID-19 has been identified as primarily a respiratory illness, however, with its clinical manifestation of involvement with multiple organs, it is now considered a systemic illness. In particular, it also can elicit a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms. One of the proposed manifestations is Bell’s Palsy, an acute idiopathic facial nerve palsy that affects the lower motor neuron. Here we have a patient with recent COVID infection who presents with a unilateral facial droop along with unilateral weakness/tingling of extremities and was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy.
Case Description: Patient is a 47-year-old male with a past medical history of …

East Florida Research Day 2023
A scoping review of COVID-19's impact on healthcare delivery and health outcomes found disruptions in care delivery and a shift towards telemedicine(1). Another study found no significant change in the length of stay for patients admitted to the hospital for COPD exacerbation during the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period(2).
We conducted a secondary analysis of HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital data to compare the outcomes of patients with COPD before (Jan 2018 – Feb 2020) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020 – Dec 2021). The data included patients aged over 18 years who were diagnosed with COPD …

Introduction
- Cancer patients might be more susceptible to COVID-19 infection.
- With a higher incidence of acute complications, severe disease and higher mortality rates.
- Identifying factors contributing to severe disease remains essential to avoid the risk of severe and often fatal COVID-19 exposure.
- We report on the predisposing factors for severe COVID-19 and increased hospitalization burden in cancer patients at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) in Philadelphia.

COVID-19 manifests as a flu-like respiratory infection affecting multiple organ systems. Symptoms range from mild viral illness to severe acute respiratory infection. There is no definitive relationship between COVID-19 and cellulitis, inflammatory myositis, vasculitis, or necrotizing fasciitis. It is interesting to note that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (Receptor for SARS-CoV-2) is present on endothelial cells in multiple organs, including dermal blood vessels and arterial smooth muscle cells. There are several theories that have formed to explain the relationship between COVID-19 and a necrotizing fasciitis infection. This study presents one unique case of an unvaccinated COVID+ patient and the necrotizing fasciitis infection …

Effects Of Covid-19 In The Status Of Childhood Obesity In The United States: A Literature Review, Ana Cruz
The Graduate School Posters
Introduction: The main hypothesis is that COVID-19 affects the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States due the precautions needed to contain the pandemic.
Methods: The methods used in this semi-systematic literature review includes web-based research from the following sources: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and EBSCOhost. The search was limited to children ages 5 to 19 years old with diagnosed obesity.
Results: The review found that COVID-19 pandemic has greatly increased the rate of childhood obesity in the United States due to changes in diet, increased screen time, and less physical activity.
Discussion: There …
