Varieties Of Renal Diseases Identified In Renal Biopsies Of Patients Infected By Covid-19, Jessica Anderson, Wei Li, Hassan D. Kanaan, Ping Zhang

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Context: COVID-19 has been shown to cause renal pathology by multiple proposed mechanisms. However, studies evaluating renal biopsies for the effects of COVID-19 remain limited. We report our experience in our health system in a variety of renal pathologic diagnoses caused by COVID-19 infection.

Design: We performed detailed analysis of 5 renal biopsies related to COVID-19 infection, of 812 renal biopsies over the previous 22 months (0.6% of all cases).

Results: The first 3 patients were 2 African American men, 34 and 45 years old, and 1 48-year-old white male transplant recipient who developed acute kidney injury and nephrotic range …

Acute Pericarditis And Acute Pleuritis/Empyema Following Submandibular Infection In A Covid-19-Postive Patient: An Autopsy Revealing The Danger Space Of The Neck, Jessica Anderson, Seyedalireza Fatemi, Joseph Fullmer, Ping Zhang Sep 2022

Acute Pericarditis And Acute Pleuritis/Empyema Following Submandibular Infection In A Covid-19-Postive Patient: An Autopsy Revealing The Danger Space Of The Neck, Jessica Anderson, Seyedalireza Fatemi, Joseph Fullmer, Ping Zhang

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Acute pericarditis and empyema are life-threatening complications of severe odontogenic infections; reports of these findings from an autopsy perspective are rare. We report an autopsy case demonstrating infection from the mandibular molars to the pericardium and pleura in a patient following COVID-19 infection. A 53-year-old woman with history of COVID-19 (and on repeat testing at admission) presented with submandibular abscess that grew Streptococcus anginosus. Despite incision and drainage of the neck abscess and medical treatment, her condition deteriorated, with sudden death a week after admission. An autopsy with histologic analysis was performed. Externally, a surgical incision containing purulent drainage …

Recurrent Myopericarditis Following Mrna-1273 Sars-Cov-2 Vaccination In A Patient With Previous Sars-Cov-2 Myopericarditis, Lauren Reinhold, Simon R. Dixon, Carl B. Lauter

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with myocarditis. The novel mRNA vaccines, BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273, that encode the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein have shown to be a safe combatant to the pandemic. Myocarditis has become a rare, newly recognized complication of the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations. The mechanism remains unknown, but multiple have been proposed. Case description: A 24-year-old healthy Caucasian female presented to the hospital with acute chest pain. The patient received her first dose of mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine two days prior to onset of symptoms. She reported sharp mid-sternal chest pain worse with inspiration and …

Massive Pulmonary Embolism After Pfizer Vaccine, Samiksha Pandey, Bipin Ghimire, Emma Herrmann, Dilip Khanal Oct 2021

Massive Pulmonary Embolism After Pfizer Vaccine, Samiksha Pandey, Bipin Ghimire, Emma Herrmann, Dilip Khanal

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction Vaccines against COVID -19 have been reported to cause venous thromboembolism (VTE). To our knowledge, this is the first case to report the massive, near-fatal Pulmonary Embolism (PE) associated with BNT162b2 Covid-19 (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine and discuss the associated risk factors for PE. Case 41-year-old, non-smoker, female on OCP, presented for syncope and seizure-like activity. Upon presentation, she was obtunded and tachypneic. Initial labs showed leukocytosis, mild anemia, and thrombocytopenia, respiratory and metabolic acidosis. She deteriorated quickly to cardiac arrest requiring Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and intubation. Tissue Plasminogen Activator administered for possible PE. Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) pulmonary confirmed sagittal pulmonary …

Current Challenges In Covid-19 Triaging: A Global Perspective, Mauli Patel, Robin Sudandiradas, Trini Mathew, Paul Kilgore, Mahadev Rao, Chiranjay Mukhopadhay, Marcus Zervos May 2021

Current Challenges In Covid-19 Triaging: A Global Perspective, Mauli Patel, Robin Sudandiradas, Trini Mathew, Paul Kilgore, Mahadev Rao, Chiranjay Mukhopadhay, Marcus Zervos

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background and Objectives: Although countries around the world have been combatting the same COVID-19 pandemic over the last year, the triage approach taken by various Emergency Departments (ED) is unique. This paper outlines the guidelines followed by two tertiary care hospitals in Detroit, USA and Manipal, India. By comparing hospital triage implementation protocols, this paper offers insight regarding similarities and differences between Detroit and Manipal ED, as well as strategies to overcome respective challenges. Methods: Triage algorithms from the Detroit Medical Centre in Detroit and Kasturba Medical College Hospital in Manipal were contrasted to illustrate the similarities and differences in …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: The two main challenges during the COVID 19 pandemic were to keep essential employees safe and to provide timely care to patients. We devised a novel urine specimen home pickup strategy for our patients with hematuria, irritative voiding symptoms as well as bladder cancer to address these issues. Methods: An employee dropped off necessary equipment for the urine sample to symptomatic patients’ houses. A clean catch specimen was collected and the sample left at the front door. The driver wearing PPE picked up the sample within 30 minutes and delivered it to the lab. Dipstick analysis was performed. Patients …
