Background: Approximately one out of every six individuals are adolescents between the ages of 10 to 19. Promoting health and reducing risks for this age group has life-long health and societal consequences. Evidence suggests positive and negative risk-taking behaviors cluster in this population. Models for the promotion of positive youth development have shifted in focus from avoidance of risk-taking behaviors to emphasis on psychosocial competence and holistic well-being. Evidence suggests spiritual wellbeing, regardless of conceptual definition, is more often than not associated with positive health outcomes and development in youth. However, few studies have included spiritual and moral constructs in …

Effects Of Mindfulness Stress Reduction Program On Nurses: An Integrated Research Review, Gisele Nicole Bazan

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background/Purpose:

Prevalence of nurse burnout can be as high as 40% (Duarte & Pinto-Gouveia, 2016). Variations of mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been utilized to combat burnout among nurses. Many studies utilize an adapted version(s) of the eight week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course develop by Dr. Kabat-Zinn, which aims to aid in the improvement of mindfulness through practice of linking one’s physical and mental state in a nonjudgmental way (Ghawadra et al., 2019). Multiple instruments to measure levels of burnout and other psychological effects job stressors may have on nurses have also been applied. Higher levels of burnout have been …

Background: Evidence supports Apfel Simplified Risk Score (SRS) as being effective in predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in patients following general anesthesia. Raising awareness of a person’s risk for PONV allows for prescription of antiemetics based on the Apfel SRS. Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the management of PONV highlight first identifying patients’ risk to better manage anesthesia side effects. A team of nurses working in a tertiary hospital in Texas led a project using the Apfel SRS to improve PONV management.

Purpose: To raise awareness of patients' PONV risk perioperatively to improve patient outcomes of PONV events, prophylactic …

Severe To Very Severe Hypertriglyceridemia Management, Lauren Johnston, Rachel K. Bennings Jun 2022

Severe To Very Severe Hypertriglyceridemia Management, Lauren Johnston, Rachel K. Bennings

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: HTG-induced acute pancreatitis (HTG-IAP) is the third most common cause of pancreatitis, accounting for approximately 14% of cases. Knowing best care practices and having protocols to care for this patient population is imperative. Nurses working on the frontline of care noticed an increase in patients with HTG-IAP being admitted to their critical care unit, thus looking for an answer to how to best care for them became crucial. Nurses sought to find an answer to what evidence-based care delivery to this patient population is available in peer-reviewed literature.

Purpose/aims: Investigators sought to answer the question, “In adults (>18 …
