Effect Of Emergency Severity Index (Esi) Annual Competency Assessment On Mistriage Rates, Stefanie Hoffman Jan 2021

Effect Of Emergency Severity Index (Esi) Annual Competency Assessment On Mistriage Rates, Stefanie Hoffman

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Introduction: In order to accurately assign an Emergency Severity Index (ESI) acuity level to patients who present to the emergency department (ED) triage area, it is essential triage nurses remain competent in the ESI triage tool. In addition, effective use of the ESI triage tool is critical in preventing patients from being mistriaged.
Objective: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine the effect of an ESI annual competency assessment in an ED for triage trained registered nurses (RNs).
Methods: Triage trained RNs completed an ESI competency assessment composed of 25 patient scenarios in competency assessment A, and …

Intraosseous Vascular Access In The Emergency Department, Nicole M. Helsper Devoe Jan 2015

Intraosseous Vascular Access In The Emergency Department, Nicole M. Helsper Devoe

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Current guidelines and recommendations from the American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support and the American Heart Association (AHA) include intraosseous (IO) access as a second-line alternative when delayed or failed peripheral vascular access occurs in emergent or trauma situations. IO access is underutilized in the emergency department (ED) due to registered nurses’ knowledge deficit, lack of training and education, and lack of supplies (Cheung, Rosenberg, & Vaillancourt, 2014). The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) supports the use of IO access and describes IOs as a significant time saving intervention in achieving vascular access and decreasing the time …

Implementing A Screening Pathway For Identifying Patients At Risk For Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Primary Care, Emily Fett Jan 2014

Implementing A Screening Pathway For Identifying Patients At Risk For Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Primary Care, Emily Fett

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is emerging as a significant health problem largely underrecognized by health care providers in the primary care setting (Pagel, 2008). The intent of this practice innovation project was to change and reduce the variation in practice for OSA screening that did not follow what is known about best practices. In this study, a preexperimental one-group pretest-posttest design was carried out to evaluate the outcomes associated with implementing an evidence-based screening pathway into practice for OSA based on the recommendations set forth in a clinical practice guideline recently published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (Epstein …
