Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background: When it comes to staging and monitoring ovarian cancer (OC), multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) of the abdomen is now the gold standard imaging scan. Most cases of OC that have metastasis to different locations in the body have done so via peritoneal metastases (PMs). In order to investigate whether or not the intraperitoneal cavity and retroperitoneal lymph nodes can be appropriately evaluated during laparoscopic staging of patients with OC, a prospective study was conducted. Aim and objectives: The main aim of this research is to contrast the accuracy of MDCT compared to diagnostic laparoscopy in staging of OC. Subjects …

The most common surgical treatment for inguinal hernia is mesh implantation. Current surgical options for mesh fixation involve, but are not limited to, sutures, tacks or staples, self-fixing meshes, fibrin, and other glues. Aim: To evaluate the performance of fibrin glues and sutures for fixing mesh during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Patients and Methods: Forty adult male patients with inguinal hernias were randomly assigned to have either laparoscopic transabdominal pre-peritoneal repair or open repair at Al-Azhar university facilities. Individuals were separated …

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background and Aim: Anastomotic leaking (AL) is a significant obstacle in colorectal surgery, with potential life-threatening consequences. Insufficient perfusion during surgery is one factor that can contribute to AL. Intraoperative angiography with indocyanine green (ICG) is a noninvasive imaging procedure that can monitor perfusion. This randomized controlled trial will investigate whether ICG angiography can decrease the frequency of AL and improve patient outcomes following laparoscopic colorectal resection. Methods: The clinical trial involved adult cases with a tumor located between 2 and 15 cm from the anal verge, who had colorectal anastomosis performed during colectomy or laparoscopic anterior rectal resection. The …

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background: Initially, the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) was considered a viable independent bariatric surgery, rather than solely serving as the initial phase of a two-stage laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In 1988, Hess was the first surgeon to execute a sleeve gastrectomy (SG), which was at the time a component of another malabsorptive treatment known as the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. The encouraging results of SG in terms of weight reduction and resolution of comorbidities as a first stage, paired with a low rate of complications, has encouraged the global emergence and monumentally rapid dissemination of SG as a standalone …
