Negative Predictive Value Of Ultrasound In Predicting Tumor-Free Margins In Specimen Sonography, Saira Naz, Saima Hafeez,, Zainab Hussain, Kiran Hilal

Department of Radiology

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the success of ultrasound in post-excision specimen visualization, and negative predictive value of ultrasound for estimation of tumor-free margins using histopathology as the gold standard.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analytical study.

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, from May 2010 till January 2013.

METHODOLOGY:

Sonography of all breast nodules was done before and after exicision by two female radiologists with at least five years clinical experience. All surgeries were performed by the same referring breast surgeons. All nodules were non-palpable and had histopathology as well as specimen sonography performed at AKUH. …

PURPOSE: To determine the associated toxicity, tolerance, and safety of partial-breast reirradiation.

METHODS AND MATERIALS: Eligibility criteria included in-breast recurrence occurring >1 year after whole-breast irradiation, <3 >cm, unifocal, and resected with negative margins. Partial-breast reirradiation was targeted to the surgical cavity plus 1.5 cm; a prescription dose of 45 Gy in 1.5 Gy twice daily for 30 treatments was used. The primary objective was to evaluate the rate of grade ≥3 treatment-related skin, fibrosis, and/or breast pain adverse events (AEs), occurring ≤1 year from re-treatment completion. A rate of ≥13% for these AEs in a cohort of 55 patients was …

Primary Lung Carcinoid Metastatic To The Breast, Marianna Zagurovskaya, Karen Tran-Harding, Richard Gibbs

Lung carcinoid tumors account for approximately 2% of lung cancers, with 10% of the tumors represented by the atypical type. While atypical carcinoids are metastatic to intrathoracic lymph nodes in approximately half of the cases on the initial presentation, distant metastases are seen in only 20% of the patients and are found most frequently in bones, liver, adrenal glands, and brain. We present a case of an unusual metastatic disease to the breast in 51-year-old female who developed a new breast mass 2 years after left lower lobectomy due to atypical carcinoid tumor. Atypical pulmonary carcinoid metastases to the breast …
