Background To report the diversity of MRI features of brainstem encephalitis (BE) induced by Enterovirus 71. This is supported by implementation and testing of our new classification scheme in order to improve the diagnostic level on this specific disease.
Methods Neuroimaging of 91 pediatric patients who got EV71 related BE were hospitalized between March, 2010 to October, 2012, were analyzed retrospectively. All patients underwent pre- and post-contrast MRI scan. Thereafter, 31 patients were randomly called back for follow-up MRI study during December 2013 to August 2014. The MRI signal patterns of BE primary lesion were analyzed and classified according to …
A Comparison Of Imaging Modalities For The Diagnosis Of Osteomyelitis, Brandon J. Smith, Md, Grant S. Buchanan, Md, Franklin D. Shuler, Md, Phd

Osteomyelitis is an increasingly common pathology that often poses a diagnostic challenge to clinicians. Accurate and timely diagnosis is critical to preventing complications that can result in the loss of life or limb. In addition to history, physical exam, and laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging plays an essential role in the diagnostic process. This narrative review article discusses various imaging modalities employed to diagnose osteomyelitis: plain films, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, bone scintigraphy, and positron emission tomography (PET). Articles were obtained from Pubmed and screened for relevance to the topic of diagnostic imaging for osteomyelitis. The authors …

Assessment Of Post-Treatment Imaging Changes Following Radiotherapy Using Magnetic Susceptibility Techniques, Jean-Guy Belliveau
Assessment Of Post-Treatment Imaging Changes Following Radiotherapy Using Magnetic Susceptibility Techniques, Jean-Guy Belliveau

Radiation therapy (RT) is a common treatment for brain neoplasms and is used alone or in combination with other therapies. The use of RT has been found to be successful in controlling tumors and extending the overall survival of patients; however, there are many unanswered questions regarding radiotherapy effects in the normal brain surrounding or infiltrated by tumor. Changes to the vascular and parenchyma have been documented, and more recently inflammatory mechanisms have been postulated to play a role in radiation injury. Traditional imaging techniques used within the clinic (CT and MRI) are often lacking in their ability to differentiate …
