Posters and Presentations: Medical Imaging & Therapeutic Sciences

Objectives: Interprofessional education (IPE) involves collaborative learning among students from different professions. While acceptance of these types of activities is increasing, there are opportunities to expand the number of health care professions involved in IPE. The purpose of this study was to explore student perceptions and outcomes after participation in a Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and Medical Nutrition Education (MNE) interprofessional education activity centered around a clinical case study on fetal growth. Subjects & Methods: The IPE activity was administered to four student cohorts from academic years to 2015-2016 to 2018-2019. Participants included 66 students (n=39 DMS and n=27 MNE). …

Does Specific Labelling Of Chest Radiographs To Confirm The Position Of Peripherally Inserted Central Venous Catheters Decrease Turn Around Time?, Patrick Lee, Md, Maansi R. Parekh, Md, Paras Lakhani, Md, Achala Donuru, Md, Baskaran Sundaram, Md Jun 2019

Does Specific Labelling Of Chest Radiographs To Confirm The Position Of Peripherally Inserted Central Venous Catheters Decrease Turn Around Time?, Patrick Lee, Md, Maansi R. Parekh, Md, Paras Lakhani, Md, Achala Donuru, Md, Baskaran Sundaram, Md

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Objectives

The primary objective of the current study was to decrease the turnaround time (TAT) of PICC CXRs. TAT was defined as the time from completion of the study to finalization of the report by the interpreting radiologist.

Reducing Double Chest Ct And Unnecesary Radiation: A Quality Improvement Project, Stephan S. Leung, Md, Mansi R. Parekh, Md, Achala Donuru, Md, Paras C. Lakhani, Md, Christopher G. Roth, Md, Baskaran Sundaram, Md

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Objectives

To analyze the variables resulting in double chest CTs being ordered and performed, with the aim to reduce the amount of ordered double chest CTs at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Neuroimaging Protocol In Patients Presenting With Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Kevin Hines, Md, Nikolaos Mouchtouris, Md, Karim Hafazalla, Jacob M. Mazza, Phillip Phan, Giuliana Labella, Muhammad Athar, Md, Adam Flanders, Md, Pascal Jabbour, Md

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Introduction

While lacking evidence based recommendations, most institutions must evaluate spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages (sICH) for hematoma expansion (HE). If unrecognized, it can be a devastating complication. However, because of the lack of general recommendations for serial imaging, many hospitals, including Thomas Jefferson, have arbitrarily instituted 6 hour an 24 hour stability head CT’s to evaluate for HE.

In our project, we examine the impact of this imaging protocol on the safety and quality of patient care and provide revised recommendations for imaging in sICH at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience.

Scanning For Qi: Resident And Sonographer Driven Improvement Of Radiology Resident Ultrasound Technique, Brian Blumhof, Md, Corinne Wessner, Bs, Rdms, Rvt, Kristen Mcclure, Md Jun 2019

Scanning For Qi: Resident And Sonographer Driven Improvement Of Radiology Resident Ultrasound Technique, Brian Blumhof, Md, Corinne Wessner, Bs, Rdms, Rvt, Kristen Mcclure, Md

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Objective

The aim of this structural QI project is to improve the educational ultrasound curriculum , thus improving overall resident confidence and technical ability in acquiring diagnostic quality sonographic images.

Comparing resident confidence levels and performance against their initial benchmarks as well as against yearly cohorts, we plan to create a long standing addition to the radiology residency at Jefferson, with plans to include additional ultrasound examinations as the curriculum becomes more robust.

Stakeholders include not only the radiology residency, which would benefit from improved resident education and knowledge, but also the hospital and ultimately patients, who stand to benefit …

Old Dog With New Tricks: 99mtc-Sestamibi Spect-Ct For Renal Mass Differentiation, Zachary Beswick, Ishani Dalal May 2019

Old Dog With New Tricks: 99mtc-Sestamibi Spect-Ct For Renal Mass Differentiation, Zachary Beswick, Ishani Dalal

Teaching and Education

Small renal masses have historically presented a diagnostic challenge for radiologists and urologists. MRI and CT have a limited capability to differentiate benign and malignant small solid renal masses. The relatively poor negative predictive value of renal biopsy limits the ability to avoid surgical resection in small renal masses with negative biopsy. 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT-CT can be an important tool in directing the management of patients with renal masses. We present the analysis of 99mTc-sestamibi uptake patterns in patients with small renal masses who underwent further characterization of these masses with 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT-CT. Pertinent interpretation points in differentiating renal cell carcinoma from …

Mindful Meditation Practice For Imaging Professionals, Tanya M. Custer, Kim Michael Apr 2019

Mindful Meditation Practice For Imaging Professionals, Tanya M. Custer, Kim Michael

Posters and Presentations: Medical Imaging & Therapeutic Sciences

Although a career in medical imaging is very fulfilling and rewarding, research shows that health care professionals are becoming more prone to burnout. The healthcare environment can be face-paced, stressful and demanding. Burnout syndrome results from emotional exhaustion that causes depersonalization and decreased professional accomplishment.1-3 Burnout can have a negative impact not only on the individual, but the environment as well. Decreased patient satisfaction and increased errors are both associated with burnout in the healthcare setting.2

Mindfulness can be defined as the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of …
