The humoral antibody response against Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) in infected individuals has been characterized demonstrating the latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) as the most antigenic KSHV protein. Despite the antigenicity of the protein, specific LANA epitopes have not been systematically characterized. Here, we utilized a bacteriophage T7 library, which displays 56-amino acid KSHV LANA peptides with 28-amino acid overlap (VirScan), to define those epitopes in LANA targeted by antibodies from a cohort of 62 sub-Saharan African Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) patients and 22 KSHV-infected asymptomatic controls. Intra- and inter-patient breadth and magnitude of the anti-LANA responses were quantified at the peptide …

Breast cancer is a complex disease exhibiting a great degree of heterogeneity due to different molecular subtypes. Notch signaling regulates the differentiation of breast epithelial cells during normal development and plays a crucial role in breast cancer progression through the abnormal expression of the Notch up-and down-stream effectors. To date, there are only a few patient-centered clinical studies using datasets characterizing the role of Notch signaling pathway regulators in breast cancer; thus, we investigate the role and functionality of these factors in different subtypes using publicly available databases containing records from large studies. High-throughput genomic data and clinical information extracted …

Background: In the U.S., African Americans (AAs) present with the highest incidence and mortality rates for Colorectal Cancer (CRC). When compared to Caucasian American (CA) patients, AAs also have reduced response to the first line standard of care chemotherapeutic agent 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). Previously, we observed differential gene expression between the two populations, suggesting that colon tumors from AA patients display a decreased antitumor immune response and an increased expression of genes encoding proteins involved in inflammatory processes, such as Interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Here, we investigate the role of IL-1β in modifying chemotherapeutic response and altering expression of proteins in novel AA …

Background: We reported that PARP-1 regulates genes whose products are crucial for asthma, in part, by controlling STAT6 integrity speculatively through a calpain-dependent mechanism. We wished to decipher the PARP-1/STAT6 relationship in the context of intracellular trafficking and promoter occupancy of the transcription factor on target genes, its integrity in the presence of calpains, and its connection to autophagy. Methods: This study was conducted using primary splenocytes or fibroblasts derived from wild-type or PARP-1−/− mice and Jurkat T cells to mimic Th2 inflammation. Results: We show that the role for PARP-1 in expression of IL-4-induced genes (e.g. gata-3) in splenocytes …

Introduction: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) are heterogeneous malignancies that can arise at almost any anatomical site and are classified as biologically distinct well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC). Current systemic therapies for advanced disease, including targeted therapies, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, are associated with limited duration of response. New therapeutic targets are needed. One promising target is delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3), an inhibitory ligand of the Notch receptor whose overexpression on the surface of NEN is associated with tumorigenesis. Methods: This article is a narrative review that highlights the role of DLL3 in NEN progression and prognosis, the …

Nk Cells In Uterine Cancers, Schumann Chang, Vijay Kumar, Caitlin Bauer, John Stewart

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Uterine cancer, which includes endometrial cancer (EC) and cervical cancer (CC), is one of the most prevalent gynecologic malignancies amongst women. It is the fourth most common cancer for women in the United States, with more than 90% of uterine cancers occurring in the endometrium. The uterus is a mucosal immune organ that supports embryonic and fetal development. However, its immune microenvironment is continuously altered depending on female sex hormones status, which varies with menstrual cycle and pregnancy. While pregnancy is considered a controlled stage of inflammation, this is not the case in carcinogenesis. This review paper focuses on NK …

Estrogen, Obesity, And Anticoagulant Protein S Contribute To Thrombosis In Mice, Alaina Guilbeau, Manoj Kumar, Laurent Mosnier, Rinku Majumder

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Protein S (PS) is an anticoagulant molecule present in humans and mice. Protein S binds and inhibits coagulation Factor IXa to control thrombin generation1 . Protein S is imperative for normal hemostasis and the prevention of life-threatening thrombotic events, as demonstrated by numerous studies of patients with PS deficiency2,3,4. Pregnant women5 and women who use estrogen-containing birth control pills 6 have lower levels of PS. Thus, it is postulated that estrogen downregulates PS expression in human. Because estrogen is synthesized by aromatase, which is highly expressed in adipose tissue7 , we expected that PS will be downregulated in obese mice …

Investigating The Role Of Her3 In The Resistance To Egfr Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Margaret Larsen, Hui Lyu, Bolin Liu

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

The majority (80%) of lung cancer patients suffer from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which has a 5-year survival rate of about 19%. Prior research has shown the importance of studying epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activating mutations to better understand NSCLC. These studies have led to the development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that target the EGFR mutations to combat tumor growth and metastases. First and secondgeneration EGFR-TKIs are effective in NSCLC patients with the most common EGFR mutations (exon 19 deletion (Del19) and exon 21-point mutation (L858R)); however, resistance in the form of a T790M point mutation has …

INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown that vulvar cancer and dysplasia progression is often related to human papillomavirus (HPV) or other conditions. It has been suggested that patients with HPV-related vulvar cancer or dysplasia are likely to have died from a comorbidity rather than from vulvar disease, while patients with vulvar cancer or dysplasia unrelated to HPV often present with more aggressive forms of vulvar disease. The objective of this study was to describe the causes of death in Louisiana patients with vulvar cancer or dysplasia. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 53 Louisiana patients diagnosed with vulvar cancer or dysplasia between 2013 and …

Racial Disparity In Covid-19 Severity In Prostate Cancer Patients, Austin Noel, Yong Yi, Xiao-Cheng Wu Oct 2022

Racial Disparity In Covid-19 Severity In Prostate Cancer Patients, Austin Noel, Yong Yi, Xiao-Cheng Wu

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

BACKGROUND: Past research has shown that African American cancer patients with COVID-19 have had higher hospitalization rates when compared to their Caucasian counterparts. Our study focuses on COVID-19 hospitalization rates in patients with prostate cancer. Statistics have shown that African American men are 50% more likely to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and twice as likely to die from prostate cancer versus Caucasian men. Thus, one speculation is that racial differences in COVID-19 severity among prostate cancer patients are attributable to African American men having a higher prevalence of prostate cancer and greater risk of severe outcome. This study …

Thyroid nodules can be classified as benign, malignant, or indeterminate, the latter of which make up 10–30% of nodules. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has become an attractive and promising therapy for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules. However, few studies have investigated the safety and efficacy of RFA for the management of indeterminate thyroid nodules. In this study, 178 patients with thyroid nodules diagnosed as benign (Bethesda II) or indeterminate (Bethesda III/IV) by preoperative cytopathological analysis were included. Patients in the benign and indeterminate cohorts had similar thyroid nodule volume reduction rates at 65.60% and 64.20%, respectively (p = 0.68). The …

Detection of extrathyroidal extension (ETE) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) influences treatment plan and surgical aggressiveness. Ultrasound (US) is the long-standing preoperative imaging method of choice. Life depends upon the ability of cells to evaluate and adapt to a constantly changing environment and to maintain internal stability to allow essential biochemical reactions to occur. Ions and ion channels play a crucial role in this process and are essential for survival. Alterations in the expression of the transmembrane proteins responsible for maintaining ion balance that occur as a result of mutations in the genetic code or in response to iatrogenically induced changes in the extracellular environment is a characteristic feature of oncogenesis and identifies cancer as one of a constellation of diseases known as channelopathies. The classification …
