Reconciling Incongruencies: Examining The Meaning And Influencing Factors Of Oncology Nurses' Professional Quality Of Life, Rebecca Lynne Boni
Reconciling Incongruencies: Examining The Meaning And Influencing Factors Of Oncology Nurses' Professional Quality Of Life, Rebecca Lynne Boni
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Nurses often witness suffering and loss. These experiences are intrinsic to the practice of nursing and can exert a strong, cumulative effect on nurses’ professional quality of life (QOL). Stamm (2010b) conceptualizes professional QOL as a composite of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. Inferior professional QOL has been linked to numerous negative healthcare outcomes. Oncology nurses are particularly vulnerable to compassion fatigue. The Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), created by Stamm (2009), is the current survey used to measure professional QOL, but it may not be specific enough for oncology nurses.
The purpose of this grounded theory study was …

Preparing Healthcare Staff for Cardiac Arrest Codes in the Outpatient Clinical Setting: Code Drill Training Improves Patient Outcomes
The acuity of care provided in outpatient clinical settings across the United States continues to rise. It is estimated that more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital each year (AHA, 2019). For the purpose of this clinical nurse leader (CNL)-lead quality improvement project, the relevant focus is directed towards improving the knowledge, physical skills and perceptions of healthcare staff within an urgent care center (UCC) regarding the application of advanced rescue skills. It is important to note that the …

At a large, community-based pediatric hospital in Southern California, a quality improvement project commenced with a goal to improve patient outcomes by decreasing length of stay and pain levels, while increasing toleration of feeds. Implementing a standardized guideline would ensure safe practice across the continuum and allow providers to use a systematic tool for postoperative care, including nursing care interventions and medications. The Root-Cause- Analysis tool was used to assess the microsystem and determine the contributing factors to the identified problem. A SWOT analysis was then performed, followed by a plan to collect data from all pediatric cleft palate procedures …

Implementing A Plan Of Care For Hypertension, Rebecca Hamlin
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Introduction: Providers routinely document what the next steps in treatment will be for patients who have elevated blood pressure during their office visit. In order for the plan to implemented, the patient must return to see the provider again and often wait up to 6 months before they return. This results in potentially sustained uncontrolled blood pressure.

The purpose of this project was to increase adherence to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for breast cancer screening and genetic testing.Screening for breast cancer risk factors including genetic testing helps reduce the incidence of breast cancer. A protocol was developed based on national clinical guidelines to increase screening and genetic testing for breast cancer. Provider responsibilities included screening all patients 18 years of age and older for risks factors of breast cancer, referring patients with a significant risk based on the screening for genetic testing and providing referrals for genetic counseling …
Surviving Sepsis: A Treatment Process Improvement In High Volume Emergency Departments, Brittney Burns
Surviving Sepsis: A Treatment Process Improvement In High Volume Emergency Departments, Brittney Burns
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Sepsis is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 270,000 deaths annually (CDC, 2017). It is the number one cause of death in hospitals, the number one cause of hospital readmissions, and the costliest diagnosis in the hospital setting (Fingar & Washington, 2015; Torio & Andrews, 2015). This quality improvement project aimed to increase the percentage of antibiotics administered within 1 hour for sepsis patients. Mortality rates significantly decrease when this goal is met (Howell & Davis, 2017). There is an 8% increase in mortality risks with every hour that passes with elevated lactic …

Cloth Hats: (W)Hat’S The Issue, Elizabeth Mckenna
Journal of Perioperative Nursing
Introduction
The aim of this discussion paper is to consider three issues regarding perioperative attire:
- whether cloth hats or disposable hats are better for reducing patient risk of acquiring a surgical site infection (SSI)
- whether the risk of infection is different for the bouffant style of hat compared to the skullcap style of hat
- whether there is enough evidence available to support a statement that cloth hats are safe to wear in the operating suite.
Background
Hats have been routinely worn in operating suites since the 1950s. The intention of covering the hair has been to reduce the risk of …

Supporting Paediatric Patients: Parental Presence In The Anaesthetic Journey, Salina Blake
Supporting Paediatric Patients: Parental Presence In The Anaesthetic Journey, Salina Blake
Journal of Perioperative Nursing
Objective
This discussion paper explores the use of parental presence during induction of anaesthesia as a method of decreasing paediatric and parental perioperative anxiety.
Setting
A perioperative department in an Australian public hospital.
Subjects
Paediatric patients and parents/guardians.
Primary argument
There is evidence to support the importance of parental presence in the anaesthetic setting; however, this varies between different health care facilities. This paper will argue that the presence of the parent during induction of anaesthesia will decrease the anxiety of the child. However, there has been little discussion about the pivotal role parents can play when participating in the …
Quality Improvement Initiative To Increase Comprehensive Eye Exams In Patients With Diabetes, Julia Khoury
Quality Improvement Initiative To Increase Comprehensive Eye Exams In Patients With Diabetes, Julia Khoury
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication associated with poorly controlled diabetes. Yet, only 60% of the diabetic population receives an annual eye examination by an eye specialist. Retinal imaging increases surveillance of retinopathy, however, it does not take the place of a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The aim of this quality improvement project was to increase comprehensive eye examinations in patients with diabetes aged 18 to 75 years in a family practice that recently purchased a retinal imager. This quality improvement project occurred over a 10-week period. Project objectives included increasing comprehensive dilated eye …
Addressing Barriers To Maternal Healthcare For Marshallese Islanders In Northwest Arkansas: An Internship Experience, Victoria Richardson
Addressing Barriers To Maternal Healthcare For Marshallese Islanders In Northwest Arkansas: An Internship Experience, Victoria Richardson
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Marshallese community is a rapidly growing population in Northwest Arkansas. Approximately 12,000 people migrated from the Marshall Islands and settled in the state of Arkansas due to the signing of the Compact of Free Association (COFA) in 1986. Although the population in Northwest Arkansas is experiencing rapid growth, there are significant health disparities that coincide with it. Due to vast cultural differences, language barriers, low economic status, and political barriers, the Marshallese community suffers from prenatal health inequalities and poor maternal and fetal outcomes, including low birth-weight infants, premature births, and increased infant mortality. During my internship, I provided …

Refugees' Perceptions Of Primary Care: What Makes A Good Doctor's Visit?, Anne Mutitu, Bev Zabler, Jeana M. Holt
Patient Experience Journal
Redesigning primary care is a national priority, as the United States (US) struggles with issues of poor access, high cost, and suboptimal quality. Refugees are among the populations who suffer from America’s disjointed health care system, resulting in disproportionate health disparities. Although there are many studies on refugee health, few share refugees' perceptions of primary care. We asked local refugees who were seen for primary care services at a midwestern academic nurse-led clinic, what makes a good doctor's visit? The clinic served as the hub of a federally funded refugee Community Centered Health Home (CCHH) pilot project. This qualitative study …

Is It Fair To Compare? A Patient And Family Experience Of Two Healthcare Systems And Neurosurgical Teams Within A Two-Week Period, Laura Miller Cpxp
Patient Experience Journal
As the mother of a 28-year-old son with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, and as a healthcare consultant focused on patient experience and professional development, I have a unique perspective and skill set. Recently he experienced symptoms that included an excruciating headache, neck pain and lethargy. Fearing his ventriculoperitoneal shunt had malfunctioned, he went to the emergency room and was later admitted on the neuro inpatient floor for a three-day hospitalization. His original shunt had been placed in 1991, and he never had an issue with until August 2018. While in the hospital, he was informed that he was no longer …
Increasing Rates Of Larc Uptake And Continuation Through Contraceptive Counseling: An Effective Approach For Women With Underutilization, Malia Johnson
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Unintended pregnancies in women with a substance use disorder are estimated to be nearly double that of the general population, of which negative health consequences are increased for both mother and neonate. Unintended pregnancies are preventable through the use of highly effective contraception that is less susceptible to the effects of typical versus perfect use. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is ideal for this patient population. Therefore, a thorough literature review was performed to evaluate the role of contraceptive counseling on LARC uptake and continuation among women. The results indicated that contraceptive counseling does influence LARC uptake and continuation and it …

Decisions made about timing of discharge can be subjective. Definitions of significant bradycardia are multiple, and interventions are variable.
This necessitates an informed discussion with parents about the natural course of apnea, bradycardia and reflux.
The physiology of gastroesophageal reflux and respiratory control have intermingled confounding variables.
Critical thinking is required to educate and support families, however a paucity of research exists. Risks and benefits of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions should be evaluated.
Nurses need increased confidence in understanding how to approach the preterm infant with apnea and/or reflux as well as how to interact with families to support discharge …
