Modeling Safe Sleep Practices For The Newborn In The Hospital: Is It Happening?, Marietta Sperry, Kimberly Kohlieber

Background: Nurses have been noted to model unsafe sleep practices for the newborn in the hospital, despite having been extensively trained. Parents report they repeat this behavior at home. There is a reluctance of nurses to comply, notwithstanding implementation of Back to Sleep programs and documentation of parents being taught safe sleep practices, causing a plateau in the reduction sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Methods: Systematic review of literature from CINHAL, Indiana State University Library, Google Scholar, and PubMed from last five years.

AngioMax is a single dose heparin alternative introduced in 2002 that is used in cardiac patients undergoing percutaneous intervention (PCI). Bivalirudin costs $377 per dose; heparin is less than $15 per dose. Noting practice variations, the Cath Lab set out to eliminate unnecessary pharmacy cost for PCI patients by:

  • Using current literature to inform clinical care
  • Standardizing practice

Falls in adults over 65 years of age constitute a significant health burden in our country, and this age group is growing rapidly. Falls are addressed with a multifactorial approach, addressing comorbidities, medications, and the physical environment, however, an effective point of intervention accessible by most older adults is physical activity. A brief educational presentation about the morbidity and mortality associated with falls, and the protective effects of physical activity, was provided to Meadowbrook Healthcare subacute nursing home residents in Plattsburgh, NY.
