Prognostic Factors For Male Breast Cancer: Similarity To Female Counterparts, Edward Yu, Larry Stitt, Olga Vujovic, Kurian Joseph, Avi Assouline, Joseph Au, Jawaid Younus, Francisco Perera, Patricia Tai

Abstract. Aim: To assess whether prognostic factors in male (MBC) and female (FBC) breast cancer have similar impact on survival. Patients and Methods: Charts for men and women diagnosed with breast cancer referred to the London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP) were reviewed. Patients with distant metastatic diseases were excluded. Data on prognostic factors including age, nodal status, resection margin, use of hormonal therapy, chemotherapy with/without hormone and radiation therapy (RT), overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were analyzed. Survival estimates were obtained using Kaplan-Meier methodology. The Cox regression interaction was used to compare male and female …

Estimating The Impact Of Lost To Follow-Up On Breast Cancer Patients' Disease-Free Survival, Debbie Yan Qun Huang May 2013

Estimating The Impact Of Lost To Follow-Up On Breast Cancer Patients' Disease-Free Survival, Debbie Yan Qun Huang

Statistics

Background The 5-year survival rate for patients with breast cancer is much higher than patients with other types of cancer. Due to this longer survival period, breast cancer patients also tend to have increased rates of lost to follow-up, when compared to other cancers. When a patient becomes lost, the occurrence of distant metastasis cannot be reliably ascertained, unless the patient had a breast cancer-specific (BC) death. The impact of lost patients on recurrence rates and disease-free survival (DFS) was explored in breast cancer patients seen at the City of Hope from 1997 to 2012.

Methods Female breast cancer patients …

We investigated the effect of the number of cytosine-adenine (CA) repeats in the ADAMTS9 promoter region on breast cancer lymphatic metastasis. Materials and methods: Thirty-one postoperative breast cancer patients were selected and examined retrospectively. The patients were classified into 2 groups: metastatic or nonmetastatic. Thirty healthy women were selected as the control group, and their peripheral blood was obtained. Following DNA isolation from the cancer tissue specimens and peripheral blood, the promoter region of the ADAMTS9 gene was directly sequenced and the number of CA repeats was determined. Results: The number of CA repeats ranged between 19 and 21 in …

To investigate serum HLA-G levels and its correlation with oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters in breast cancer patients. Materials and methods: The patient group consisted of 25 individuals with breast cancer who were operated on in the General Surgery Department of Gazi University’s Faculty of Medicine. Thirty-one individuals who had no history of any kind of cancer, allergic diseases, diabetes, or rheumatic and immunological disease constituted the control group. Results: Results showed that malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), and HLA-G levels in the patient group were statistically and significantly high compared to the control group (P < 0.001). While vitamin C levels were significantly lower in the patient group (P < 0.05), an insignificant difference in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and total sulfhydryl group (R-SH) levels in both groups was observed (P > 0.05). Serum …
