Actin Depolymerization Of Tenocytes Promotes A Tendinosis-Like Gene Expression, Kameron Inguito, Ba, Valerie West, Karl Matthew Ebron, Justin Parreno, Phd

Alpha Omega Alpha Research Symposium Posters

Optimal cellular mechanotransduction is essential for tendon matrix homeostasis. We recently developed an in vivo rat model of tendinosis, where the plantaris tendon are overloaded through ablation of the synergistic Achilles tendon. Using this model we determined that tissue overload disrupts matrix-cell interactions, which results in under-stimulation of tendon cells (tenocytes) (Fig.1)

Using an ex vivo model of tendon stress deprivation by maintaining tail tendon fascicles in floating culture we showed that tenocyte under-stimulation results in destabilization of filamentous (F-)actin (Fig.2). F-actin destabilization coincides with tendinosis-like gene expression: downregulation of tenogenic genes (Col1, Tnc, asma, Scx), upregulation of chondrogenic (Acan, …

Molecular Characteristics Of Periodontal Health: Collagens: Defining The Healthy Human Gingival Collagen Transcriptome, Christina Zachariadou, Thomas Hart, Deborah Hooper, Angelo Mariotti Jan 2023

Molecular Characteristics Of Periodontal Health: Collagens: Defining The Healthy Human Gingival Collagen Transcriptome, Christina Zachariadou, Thomas Hart, Deborah Hooper, Angelo Mariotti

School of Dentistry Faculty Publications

Background: Defining periodontal health has been an ambitious and complex goal. The numerous and varied definitions of what constitutes periodontal health have resulted in a collection of subjective and unreliable clinical findings to diagnose and classify periodontal health and disease. The aim of this study was to fundamentally delineate the molecular characteristics of healthy periodontal tissues in men and women as they age, using the most abundant connective tissue component: Collagens. Methods: Healthy gingival biopsies were separated into “young” (aged 18–35 years, five men/five women) and “old” (≥60 years, five men/four women) age groups depending on biological sex. RNA was …

Living With It: A Patient’S And A Biochemist’S Perspective On Kidney Disease; A Historical Review Of Alport Syndrome, Jacob Olson Apr 2021

Living With It: A Patient’S And A Biochemist’S Perspective On Kidney Disease; A Historical Review Of Alport Syndrome, Jacob Olson

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

A review paper on the origin of health studies around Alport Syndrome, including aspects of genetics, pharmacy, and biochemistry, from the past to today and beyond. This report deals with important aspects of health development with regards to kidney disease overall, but narrows its focus on Alport Syndrome specifically due to the personal nature of the topic for the author. While this paper includes no personal testimony, as it is strictly meant to be formal, the author shares a deep connection with the material.

Community Health Interventions To Reduce The Burden Of Radon-Related Lung Cancer, Benjamin Weaver Jan 2021

Community Health Interventions To Reduce The Burden Of Radon-Related Lung Cancer, Benjamin Weaver

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. One in seven homes in Vermont has elevated levels of radon, but most patients are unaware of radon as a risk factor for lung cancer or that radon testing and mitigation services are available to them. To promote increased testing and mitigation of radon we screened patients presenting to a Family Medicine practice in Vermont about whether they had had these services done in their home. We also developed a patient education resource for providers to give to patients who had more questions about radon …

The Effect Of Yoga Postures On Balance, Flexibility, And Strength In Healthy High School Females, Betsy Donahoe-Fillmore, C. Brahler, Mary Fisher, Kelly Beasley Dec 2015

The Effect Of Yoga Postures On Balance, Flexibility, And Strength In Healthy High School Females, Betsy Donahoe-Fillmore, C. Brahler, Mary Fisher, Kelly Beasley

Objective: The purpose of this study was to document the effects of yoga interventions on balance, flexibility, and strength in adolescent girls 14 to 18 years. Study Design: Quasi-experimental, nonrandomized. Background: Research on the effects of yoga on balance, flexibility, and strength has focused on adults, although yoga is being marketed to all ages. Methods and Measures: A convenience sample of 33 female adolescents participated in yoga training 2 times per week and a walking program 3 times per week, for 7 weeks. The instructor-led group received instruction from a registered yoga therapist in person, while the video-led group watched …
