Background: Health professions trainees experience high rates of anxiety and depression but are often reluctant to seek help. Institutional outreach during pre-clinical training may identify vulnerable students, improve resource awareness, and destigmatize psychological counseling. The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Quick Check program is a novel opt-out program connecting health professions students to mental health counselors.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate student perceptions and utilization of mental health resources after participation in the UNMC Quick Check program.

This article looks at well-being and the role of leadership from the perspective of emergency medicine. The importance of leadership within the emergency department (ED), emergency medicine writing at large, and the prevention of burnout and compassion fatigue cannot be overstated. This article looks at the need for more research and measured interventions within the ED. It also highlights some measures that could be taken to help improve well-being from a leadership perspective to improve patient safety and outcomes within the ED.

Communication with stakeholders for a graduate medical education (GME) program depends on shared visual and written content. Residency training programs are embracing social media as a communication channel. However, curated information that may only be viewed by subscribers or followers is difficult to archive and may appear overwhelming to novice users. Research shows that when educational leaders support their learners’ autonomy, it positively impacts both parties. This is particularly important in graduate medical education (GME), given that there is a strong emphasis on resident performance, evaluation, and development. Unfortunately, GME faculty often misunderstand autonomy as the resident’s desire for independence or “freedom,” when in fact it refers to the core psychological need to feel volitional and agentic. The distinction is important because volition is not synonymous with independence, and providing freedom can be at odds with strategies that provide true autonomy support. For over 100 years, we have tried to understand how human motivation works. Although various theories have been developed and different experiments have been conducted to explain motivational drive, we have realized that extrinsic motivation factors, such as rewards and punishment, and financial incentives are not the answers. More important and central to motivation is nourishing our innate human need to be autonomous, competent, and to relate to our organizational culture. All of us need to understand the story of motivation because, as dire as our need for high-quality motivation is, high-quality motivation remains an asymptote.

The article presents the findings of a comprehensive narrative literature review aimed at addressing the question: What are the current frameworks of the medical humanities discipline in terms of purpose, methodology, curriculum, and student learning outcomes? Thematic analysis and qualitative coding highlighted key themes and areas of concern, including the purpose of medical humanities, methodology, current curriculum, and student outcomes. Recommendations are provided to address disagreements within the discipline, proposing a conceptual framework and definition for medical humanities, alongside advocating for a mixed-method approach as the primary methodology. This paper explored electronic resources utilization and evidence-based medicine practice of resident doctors in teaching hospitals in South-East Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted in the study and the population for the study was 1031 resident doctors in three teaching hospitals in south-East, Nigeria. Proportionate sampling technique was used and data were collected with the aid of questionnaire and key informal interviews. The reliability test of the variables ranged from α = 0.81 - 0.99. Healthcare students are under stress and can use different methods to cope with it. Mindfulness techniques such as guided meditation has been used as a way of helping these students reduce their stress levels. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether guided meditation has an effect on student doctors that translates into more positive interactions with patients. This study found that the student doctors who completed guided meditation felt less frustrated and less impatient while interacting with patients than student doctors who did not perform the guided meditation. Following coach training for College of Medicine faculty and leadership, the benefits of coaching for inculcating the habit of self-reflection to find one’s truth and create learning paths was recognized. While there was unanimous agreement to implement coaching for medical students, the contributing factors for the success of or barriers to academic medical coaching programs were ambiguous. We embarked on a scoping review to understand how coaching is being used for medical learners, and will share our process and preliminary discoveries.

Interprofessional relationships are important to the productivity of healthcare teams, especially as collaborative approaches become increasingly common in the healthcare setting. This paper focuses on the impacts of interprofessionalism and interprofessional education on healthcare teams collaborations. Drawing from a mixed-methods approach, data was gathered through an online survey and interviews conducted at the UNMC GOODLIFE Clinic, a student-run clinic. Findings reveal differences in perceptions between post-graduate professionals and students regarding the role and importance of interprofessionalism.
