Bridging The Gap In Science Research: Preparing Students For College- Level Research In The Sciences, Victoria Helwig, Yaoguang Li
Bridging The Gap In Science Research: Preparing Students For College- Level Research In The Sciences, Victoria Helwig, Yaoguang Li
UConn Library Presentations
Many first-year students enter college unprepared to fully engage with scientific literature and academic library resources. Drawing on experiences from academic librarians working with STEM students, this session explores common gaps in science research skills, including navigating databases, identifying scholarly sources, and understanding the structure of scientific literature. Participants will be introduced to practical strategies and classroom-ready activities to better prepare students for college-level research. Discussion questions: What science research skills do students struggle with most when entering college? How can high school instruction better support these skills? Where can librarians and educators collaborate to support student success?

The Undergraduate Education And Scientific Literacy: Exploring How College Influences Student Perception Of Covid-19 Events, Peyton Brooking
The Undergraduate Education And Scientific Literacy: Exploring How College Influences Student Perception Of Covid-19 Events, Peyton Brooking
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Current undergraduate students received much of their education following the events of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these students experienced pandemic events before receiving any or most of their science-based higher education. Exploring their progress through higher education, and how it retroactively influenced their perception of pandemic events, serves as an informative research area. This study explores how undergraduate education in the sciences influences student engagement with complex recent events in science. In addition, this study asked how higher education builds confidence in interpreting this information. Additionally, students were surveyed to understand their scientific literacy baseline at the beginning of …

Improving Scholarly Activity Through A Bundled Intervention Of Resident-Faculty Connection And Research Ideas, Katie Suleta, Norman W. Gill
Improving Scholarly Activity Through A Bundled Intervention Of Resident-Faculty Connection And Research Ideas, Katie Suleta, Norman W. Gill
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Residents report barriers to engaging in scholarly activity despite this being a common requirement across residency programs. Two commonly reported barriers are a lack of mentorship by faculty and a lack of ideas for projects that meet the criteria for scholarly activity. The study objective is to describe the effect of an intervention to address a lack of mentorship and a lack of ideas for scholarly activities.
Methods
A retrospective cohort design was utilized to investigate changes in scholarly activity between 2 academic years. An internal medicine residency program with 30 residents and 17 faculty members participated in an …

Patient Experience Journal
Representation of ethnic minorities among trial participants in the UK is poor. It is true that the need for diversity and inclusive language is important in research, but the practicality of making this a reality for patients from under-represented groups has not generally been the case. As a patient advocate, I have been a participant in clinical trial reviews and advisory boards during the past three years and have engaged in a national-level conversation about patient voice and equity. I draw connections between structured frameworks for patient and public involvement (PPI) in the UK and the more informal, community-based caregiving …

Amid the ongoing changes across the healthcare and research environment—marked by funding constraints, shifting institutional priorities, and increasing clinical demands—faculty are facing mounting challenges to sustaining meaningful research mentorship. At the same time, medical student interest in research continues to rise, driven by both personal curiosity and career-oriented goals. This monograph explores how team-based mentorship models can help bridge this growing divide, offering a flexible and collaborative approach that distributes the responsibilities of guiding student research across mentors with complementary expertise. Drawing from the experience of seasoned faculty mentors across diverse settings, this monograph provides practical strategies to maintain high-quality …
A Week-Long Departmental Scholarship Curriculum For Pediatric Subspecialty Fellows, Amy Creel, Amanda Messer, Robin English
A Week-Long Departmental Scholarship Curriculum For Pediatric Subspecialty Fellows, Amy Creel, Amanda Messer, Robin English
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Scholarly activity is a key requirement in pediatric subspecialty fellowship training. However, clear guidance on how to effectively support fellows in their scholarly endeavors remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the impact of a week-long departmental scholarship curriculum designed to enhance fellows' research competencies. METHODS: In 2024, a curriculum was designed and delivered to first-year pediatric subspecialty fellows over 5 days, combining group learning sessions with individualized tasks. Pre- and post-curriculum surveys assessed fellows' confidence and knowledge across key scholarly domains. Daily session evaluations provided additional feedback. Fourteen fellows from 9 pediatric subspecialty programs participated. RESULTS: All first-year fellows …

Medical schools must evolve with the changing healthcare landscape and financial pressures. Academic Health Centers have responded to these changes with a novel organizational model known as an integrated service line. Traditional medical school departments often create silos, lack of alignment, and financial burdens. To our knowledge, we were the first medical school to implement an integrated structure combining the tripartite missions of academics, research, and clinical services.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine accepted its charter class of 55 medical students in 2016 with a traditional medical school department model. By 2023, it had 154 …

Research Symposium
Background: Less than 7% of medical students publish research articles. Factors contributing to delays in student engagement include perceived time limitations, lack of enthusiasm, poor facilities, and insufficient supervisory support. Although project-based programs can improve research abilities, they frequently do not correspond with the program's goals, pedagogical approaches, and assessment standards and, worse, are not linked with other teaching modules. There is scarce evaluation of longitudinal research integrated programs' effects on pre-clerkship students and faculty motivation, willingness, and skills. We designed a pre-clerkship longitudinal research module integrated with the concurrent modules to enhance scores on attitudes toward research (R-ATR), cognition …

Addressing Burnout And Enhancing Well-Being Among Academic Physicians: A Call For Future Research And Organizational Support, Kelly D. Holder, Sharon Y. Lee, Fatima Zehra Raza, Laura R. Stroud
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Burnout among academic physicians, who navigate multiple roles beyond the clinical environment, is a pressing issue. However, the factors driving burnout among academic physicians are not fully understood. Prior research has revealed differences in burnout dimensions between clinical and basic science faculty, but the impact of balancing research, education, and clinical demands on academic physicians is still unclear. This knowledge gap negatively affects the clinical, translational science, research, and medical education workforces and has particular implications for minoritized and marginalized groups working in academic medical centers. Creating a culture of well-being has been vital in addressing burnout. Further research is …
