The disproportionate impact of COVID on the mortality and morbidity of people of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds has been recognised and is under investigation. Here we present a different impact: that on the psyche. As three doctors of BAME heritage, we shared an experience of being redeployed from ophthalmology to the COVID Intensive Care Unit. We share our reflections on the experience and lessons learned.

Current circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic require residency programs to conduct virtual interviews. We draw upon our experience with virtual interviews from fall 2019, prior to COVID-19, and propose a potential implementation process for virtual interviewing strategies. Background: The impact of COVID-19 on residency training nationwide has been substantial, and adapting to this unprecedented event has proven challenging for program directors throughout the United States. Here, the authors presented their initial experiences with restructuring an obstetrics and gynecology residency program during the pandemic. The authors outlined their strategies to maximize resident safety and address clinical care in outpatient and inpatient settings, resident education curriculum, resident wellness and consider the ethical dilemmas of health care providers during a pandemic.

An Inexpensive Adult Lumbar Puncture Task-Trainer With Simulated Cerebrospinal Fluid, Steven Warrington, Anne Marie Warrington

Background: Simulation is beneficial in achieving competence and success in the performance of procedures. Unfortunately, costs associated with purchasing simulation equipment is a significant barrier to implement this training. The objective was to create a model for lumbar puncture that allowed performance of the procedure using anatomic landmarks, ability to obtain cerebrospinal fluid, and measure opening pressure.

Methods: A model was built using several readily available and low-cost items and was iterated based on feedback. The task trainer was used as part of multiple educational sessions and simulations with different groups of learners, including residents and medical students.

Objective: The objective is to determine the accuracy of foot and ankle joint and soft tissue structure palpation in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residents using ultrasonography (US) verification.

Methods: PM&R residents were tested in an outpatient musculoskeletal (MSK) clinic on palpated foot and ankle anatomic structures in a human model. Once the presumed structures were localized, residents marked a 1 cm size circle on the overlying skin with a ink marker. The accuracy of the circle over the joint line and soft tissue structures was verified using US.

The epidemic level of opioid abuse in the U.S. population continues to present a major challenge to our society and to the medical profession. Medical education has a significant role in improving screening, diagnosis, appropriate treatment and management of opioid use disorder. Addressing the problem of overprescribing opioids through physician education, surveillance and opioid management has resulted in significant improvement, translating to fewer overdose deaths from prescription opioids. Graduate medical education can increase access to care by training more addiction medicine specialists, and training other physicians to prescribe buprenorphine and provide access to medically assisted care.

After completing the medical portion of our mission trip in Nicaragua, we began our public health portion. Along with fellow students, I laid concrete flooring in this woman’s house. Introduction: The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the reliability of an interprofessional collaboration measurement scale used for nursing interactions with resident physicians. To date, the collaboration between nurses and residents has not been adequately investigated and a validated tool specifically for this purpose is not yet available. Our objective is to adapt a previously validated interprofessional scale for health care settings to the specific nurse/resident physician collaboration.

Introduction: Although the number of women physicians has been increasing, there may be gender disparities in the assessment of female emergency medicine residents. This study sought to determine if female emergency medicine residents are less likely to become chief residents than males.

Methods: In July 2017, an anonymous survey was distributed to the program coordinators of all accredited emergency medicine residency programs in the United States. The survey requested the number of males and females in each graduating class from 2015 to 2017. The percentage of female residents who were chief residents was calculated and compared to that for males. …

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease affecting all age groups and can manifest in various forms, often making the initial or successive presentations difficult to diagnose. Peritonitis secondary to lupus is a rare manifestation of this disease and the prevalence is said to be much lower in children. We present a case report of an adolescent male with a known history of lupus who presented to the emergency department with a clinical picture consistent with an acute surgical abdomen and underwent an appendectomy. Subsequent workup identified the culprit as a lupus-related peritonitis requiring corticosteroids for resolution.
