Laboratory Office Hours As Outreach In The Health Sciences: Better Research Skills For Better Careers, Todd Prusin

Medical librarianship is changing in health care environments. Since 1996, by which time the standards that determine how hospitals acquire accreditation changed, many hospitals have been acquiring accreditation without a qualified medical librarian on site. For that reason, it has become even more important that health care professionals, doctors, nurses, and other clinicians learn to access and evaluate quality information as an integral part of their academic training. Medical clinicians now must begin their careers with strong research skills. These skills must be attained during their academic matriculation, and studies in the field of librarianship have shown that departmental outreach …

Pneumocystis Carinii (Jirovecii) Pneumonia (Pcp): The Most Common Opportunistic Infection Observed In Hiv/Aids Cases At The University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Jamaiah Ibrahim
Jamaiah Ibrahim
This retrospective study was conducted among 59 HIV/AIDS patients with opportunistic infections admitted to the University Malaya Medical Centre between 2000 and 2009. Fifty-five point nine percent of cases were Chinese, 25.4% were Malays, 11.9% were Indians and 6.8% were of unknown ethnic origin. The male:female ratio was 2.9:1 (44 males and 15 females). The majority of cases were Malaysians (89.8%) and the rest (10.2%) were immigrants. Most of the patients (18.6%) were non-laborers, followed by …
Physician-Assisted Suicide An Ethical Way Out Or An Easy Way Out, Joshua M. Benson
Physician-Assisted Suicide An Ethical Way Out Or An Easy Way Out, Joshua M. Benson

Is it ethical, and/or should it be legal, for a terminally ill patient to substitute their will for that of God or nature by allowing them to decide when he or she is ready to die? The death of Dr. Jacob “Jack” Kevorkian last summer brought physician-assisted suicide back into the public limelight. Since 1988, the general public, the courts, legislatures, and physicians have been debating whether it is moral, ethical, or legal to allow for physician-assisted suicide. Recently, the state of Washington’s legislature adopted Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act and Montana’s judicial system found physician-assisted suicide to be legal. …

The Clinical Gaze In The Practice Of Migrant Health: Indigenous Mexican Migrants In The United States, Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
Seth M. Holmes PhD, MD
This paper utilizes eighteen months of ethnographic and interview research undertaken in 2003 and 2004 as well as follow-up fieldwork from 2005 to 2007 to explore the sociocultural factors affecting the interactions and barriers between U.S. biomedical professionals and their unauthorized Mexican migrant patients. The participants include unauthorized indigenous Triqui migrants along a transnational circuit from the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, to central California, to northwest Washington State and the physicians and nurses staffing the clinics serving Triqui people in these locations. The data show that social and economic structures in health care and subtle cultural factors in biomedicine keep …

Fibromyalgie, Douleur Et Fasciathérapie, Cyril Dupuis, Danis Bois
Danis Bois
