Implementation And Program Evaluation Pilot Study: Educating Health Care Providers About Protecting Population Health During Climate Change., Christine Fasching Maphis
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Recommendations regarding the need to prepare nurses and other health care providers (HCPs) for the health impacts of climate change (CC) have grown ubiquitous in the literature. Timely, efficient and sustainable strategies by the health care industry are necessary. Failure to act is predicted to result in catastrophic and lethal population health consequences. A growing body of research identifies related knowledge gaps and supports HCP competencies and best practice interventions to mitigate adverse population health impacts of CC. A social ecological framework and the PRECEDE-PROCEED approach were employed to develop and evaluate a series of online webinars designed to equip …
Introducing A New 12 Week Education & Simulation Program To Optimize Financial Performance Of Nurse Managers, Melissa Hathcoat
Introducing A New 12 Week Education & Simulation Program To Optimize Financial Performance Of Nurse Managers, Melissa Hathcoat
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Several nurse executives (Waxman 2018; Massarweh, 2017; Hunt, 2018) agree that in today's increasingly complex health care environment, the reality of decreasing reimbursements and increasing focus on value-based metrics reflects a crucial knowledge base for nurse managers. Therefore, it is imperative for unit-based nurse leaders to receive education and support to attain and maintain the requisite business competencies to achieve both fiscal and quality targets in their microsystem (McFarlan, 2020). In an integrated managed care delivery system in northern California, no education curriculum exists for nurse managers and assistant nurse managers that addresses gaps in financial knowledge, skills, and …

Increasing Nurse Knowledge Using A Formal Lung Transplant Education Program, Amy M. Stoddard, Donna Lynch-Smith, Kate Carlson Wrammert, Bobby Bellflower
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This quality improvement project was completed to show that a formal lung transplant education course for nurses caring for lung transplant patients increased their knowledge. An eight-hour education course was developed by experts in the field of lung transplantation. A pretest was administered before the education course. A posttest was administered to determine if knowledge was improved. A three-month follow-up test was administered to determine knowledge retention. Based on the data analysis, nurse knowledge improved after formal education. Item analysis determined what areas of educational content need to be the focus of quarterly education. The education course was adopted as …

Mandating Nursing Faculty Disability Training: Learn To See The Ability In All Your Students, Rebekkah Stanko
Nursing (graduate) Student Scholarship
Nursing students with disabilities are an under recognized, and under supported, minority student population. Though the exact statistics for nursing students with disabilities is unknown, the presence of these students within nursing programs across the United States has been increasing significantly over the past decade. As the profession of nursing continues to strive to educate and grow a diverse professional workforce, nursing faculty will need to develop a working knowledge and understanding of disability and disability law to maintain compliance with federal law and best meet the educational needs and requirements of nursing students with disabilities. However, nursing programs have …

The Effects Of Moderate-Severe Plaque Psoriasis On Patient Well-Being And Prevention Of Flares, Glenn Devera
The Effects Of Moderate-Severe Plaque Psoriasis On Patient Well-Being And Prevention Of Flares, Glenn Devera
Nursing | Senior Theses
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that is indicated by red, patchy and scaly skin that can be painful when irritated. Patients with psoriasis have an increased risk for a number of chronic diseases. Despite the expansion of treatments for moderate-to-severe psoriasis over the last decade, patients may still find that treatment strategies are not as successful, leaving them dissatisfied with their treatments. A relationship built upon trust between the nurse and the patient diagnosed with psoriasis may serve to help ensure optimal care. A comprehensive literature review was performed and found that best practices for patient management need to …

Nursing Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes About Pain Management And Opioids, Hedieh Hatami Sirjani
Health Services Research Dissertations
Statement of the problem: healthcare professionals’ knowledge of using opioids for pain management safely is critical in preventing opioid abuse and overdose. Undergraduate curricula of health professional schools, including undergraduate nursing programs, need to improve and adopt a comprehensive education regarding this issue.
Method: the first project was a systematic analysis of the literature regarding the educational interventions’ impact on healthcare professional knowledge and practice behavior regarding prescription opioids. The second project was a qualitative study of nursing students to explore their experience, self-efficacy, and knowledge of prescription opioid use for pain management and whether they feel the need for …
Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman
Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman
Doctoral Projects
Endotracheal intubation is an essential component within the skill set of anesthesia providers. Rapid arterial desaturation remains a primary risk factor during laryngoscopy and intubation. The risk for hypoxemia exists because during endotracheal intubation, patients are apneic or hypo-ventilating (Wong et al., 2017). Apneic oxygenation (AO) has been advocated to attenuate hypoxemia during endotracheal intubation (Pavlov et al., 2017).
The aim of this project was to assess for any knowledge deficits regarding AO among anesthesia providers and assess the willingness of these providers to include AO into their current practice. The project investigator conducted an education session involving the …
Reducing Patient Falls Through Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Amanda Savage
Reducing Patient Falls Through Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Amanda Savage
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Falls significantly affect patients, resulting in temporary or permanent harm, even death. In a large acute care facility, patient falls increased from 444 in 2016 to 556 falls in 2019.
PICOT: In an adult inpatient hospital setting, does purposeful hourly rounding (PHR), compared to no rounding, reduce patient falls over a period of 30 days during the same time period from the previous year?
Evidence: Of the 360 articles reviewed, 12 articles, varying from evidence levels two (1), level three (4), and level five (7), supported PHR as effective in reducing harm from falls in adult …
How Does The 2020 Revised Definition Of Pain Impact Nursing Practice?, Olivia Sonneborn, Annie Williams
How Does The 2020 Revised Definition Of Pain Impact Nursing Practice?, Olivia Sonneborn, Annie Williams
Journal of Perioperative Nursing
The widely used and acknowledged universal definition of pain developed by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) in 1979 has been revised in 2020. The 2020 IASP definition states pain is ‘an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage’. The 2020 IASP definition of pain reinforces the importance for nurses to have an understanding of the pathophysiology of pain and highlights the crucial role pain assessment plays in overall pain management, which nurses are pivotal in driving and delivering.
Effect Of An Intervention To Improve Smoking Cessation Treatment In A Federally Qualified Healthcare Clinic, Shirley A. Camp
Effect Of An Intervention To Improve Smoking Cessation Treatment In A Federally Qualified Healthcare Clinic, Shirley A. Camp
The Corinthian
Abstract
Significant progress has been made in the reduction of tobacco use in the United States, but the smoking prevalence among the socially and economically disadvantaged populations (i.e. individuals who are homeless, uninsured, LGBT, and living with HIV) is significantly higher than the general population (CDC, 2018b). As a result, these vulnerable populations carry a disproportionate burden of tobacco-related mortality and morbidity (CDC, 2018b). There is a cost-effective and evidence-based treatment for tobacco use dependence (Fiore et al, 2008), but the delivery by primary care providers to this population is inconsistent (Tyman, Bonevski, Paul, & Bryant, 2014). This study focused …

Implementing Trauma-Informed Care Early In The Lives Of Children And Adults, Carley Clymer
Implementing Trauma-Informed Care Early In The Lives Of Children And Adults, Carley Clymer
Scholars Week
Throughout the health care industry, providers are failing to recognize the implications that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have upon adult health. As a result, these patients not only have to endure these traumas, but they’re also faced with crippling health conditions that accompany them including depression, heart disease and obesity. The prevalence of common high-risk behaviors such as smoking, drinking and illicit drug use can also co-exist with adversity, which leads to an exacerbation of already poor health. This presentation aims to relay the significance of adopting a trauma informed care (TIC) approach early in the lives of clients to …
Family Presence During Resuscitation, Brittany Whistle
Family Presence During Resuscitation, Brittany Whistle
Scholars Week
Background:
Families want more involvement in their loved one’s care than they did just twenty years ago. Especially, in the matter of resuscitation efforts, this involvement remains controversial.
Evidence and Findings:
Based on research, theories, and multiple educated opinions, family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) needs to be implemented in hospitals. Theories by Kolcaba and Helvie demonstrate a need for comfort and positive energy around patients to enhance the healing process. Evidence has shown multiple benefits of FPDR. The patient receives a holistic approach of care, the family gains closure and feeling of participation of care, and provides a plan for …
Recommending That School Nurses Provide Mental Health Screenings To Students, Mariah Dufault
Recommending That School Nurses Provide Mental Health Screenings To Students, Mariah Dufault
Scholars Week
Childhood mental health issues not being identified early, caused by a lack of knowledge and awareness in childhood mental health, can lead to lifelong debilitating issues. The Center for Disease Control states, “Mental disorders among children are described as serious changes in the way children typically learn, behave, or handle their emotions, which cause distress and problems getting through the day” (CDC 2020). These issues can lead to negative self-worth, a lack of ambition, thoughts of self-harm, aggression towards others, and suicidal ideations. Studies have even shown that, “Half of adults with mental health disorders report or have been shown …
Peripheral Iv Bundle, Alicia Hanna

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Abstract
It is estimated that over 90% of hospitalized patients require IV access during their hospitalization. Peripheral IVs (PIVs), while less risky than central lines, are not without risk to the patients. Intravenous (IV) infiltration in pediatric patients is a very common complication associated with IV access, accounting for about 67% of IV catheter removals; a less common complication, but much more serious complication of a PIV can be a blood stream infection (BSI) which can account for up to 35% of BSIs seen in patients. BSIs are associated with increased length of stay, increased morbidity and can result in …
