Evaluating The Association Of Influenza Vaccination On Long-Term Covid-19 Symptoms In U.S. Adults, Ratnakar Pingili
Evaluating The Association Of Influenza Vaccination On Long-Term Covid-19 Symptoms In U.S. Adults, Ratnakar Pingili
Capstone Experience
Objective. To evaluate the association of influenza vaccination in the past 12 months with Long COVID effects and clinical and sociodemographic factors.
Methods. Cross-sectional study with data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), covering 415,132 non-institutionalized U.S. adults with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis and influenza vaccination reported within the last 12 months. Logistic regression was conducted between influenza vaccination (exposure) and Long COVID (outcome), controlling for demographic variables, pre-existing health conditions, and socioeconomic status.
Results. Of 120,603 participants, 21.89% reported Long COVID symptoms and 42.04% had received an influenza vaccine. Findings indicate a statistically significant 13% reduction …

Background: Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) failure and difficult intravenous access (DIVA) are pervasive issues causing patient suffering and increased costs. Despite their prevalence, there is a gap in internal medicine and pediatric resident training to manage these challenges effectively.
Objective: This study aimed to assess the value of ultrasound-guided-PIVC (USGPIVC) education for internal medicine and pediatric residents and the impact of a 1-hour multidisciplinary workshop on their knowledge and confidence.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted at an academic medical center in 2022 to assess residents’ perceptions of USG-PIVC education. This was followed by a USG-PIVC simulation-based workshop with …

Implementation Of A Nurse-Led Clinical Algorithm For Pressure Injury Prevention Associated With Non-Invasive Ventilation Medical Device Use, Capri Steinkuhler, Kaitlin Rogge
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Purpose and Aims
Medical device related pressure injuries (PI) account for as much as 61-81% of all hospital reported wound incidents (Gefen et al., 2020) and are frequently caused by respiratory devices such as non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Use of NIV in critically ill patients dramatically increased during the pandemic. PI are one of the leading causes of injury to hospitalized patients and lengthens hospital stays (National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel [NPIAP], 2019). The NPIAP recommends routine skin assessment under devices, proper mask fit, protective barrier, moisture reduction, and interdisciplinary collaboration to prevent PIs from NIV masks. This feasibility study’s purpose …

Due to workforce demands, new undergraduate nurses are hired directly into fast-paced units and are expected to manage complex patients with rapidly changing conditions and respond to time-sensitive situations. It is important for nurse educators to prepare undergraduate nurses for transition into clinical practice upon graduation. Simulation has been a valuable tool to provide experiential learning and promote clinical decision-making. The next iteration of improving clinical simulation as an experiential learning modality for nursing students is Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR): a realistic, immersive simulation in a 3-dimensional environment that is experienced by body movements and hand controllers. IVR can incorporate …

Introducer-Free Mis-Assisted Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Placement: A Technical Document, Eric Chen, Patrick Opperman, Edson Deoliveira, Priscila Rodrigues Armijo, Vishal Kothari, Daniel Surdell
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Background
The placement of the distal catheter of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) can be challenging in patients with a large body habitus. Given the complications associated with ventriculoperitoneal shunts and known infection risk of obese patients, new techniques for VPS placement that bypass the abdominal fat must be sought. By avoiding the abdominal fat, decreased complications and infection risk may be possible.
Objective
The objective of this technical document is to describe a laparoscopic approach to the abdominal cavity during ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery that makes use of a direct tunneling technique into the peritoneal space.
Methods
We perform a ventriculoperitoneal …
